The Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has unilaterally declared that “We ( meaning Malaysia ) have never, never been secular… we are an Islamic state.”

Soon after, as reported in Malaysiakini, some officer from the Internal Security Ministry issued a gag order : all mainstream media are not to publish any news on the issue of Malaysia being an Islamic state.

These are very unhealthy developments and must concern all of us.

DAP is organising a public forum to discuss the above issues:

Panel of Distinguished Speakers

  • Lim Kit Siang, Parliamentary Opposition Leader
  • Ambiga Sreenevasan, Malaysia Bar Council President
  • Malik Imtiaz, Human Rights Lawyer
  • Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, PKR Treasurer
  • Rev Dr Hermen Shastri, General Secretary, Council of Churches*
  • Lim Guan Eng, Secretary-General to DAP

* To be confirmed

Venue: KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall
Date: 25th July 2007 (Wednesday)
Time: 7.30 pm

See you all at the forum.

These are worrying developments in this country.
    I am outraged!
When religious authourities can lable or insinuate that a girl is unclean (najis), arrest her based on her clothing choices, when dead bodies are being snatched, when imams call for chastity belts for women, when mothers are separated from their babies, when husbands and wives are separated, when the authorities feel they have every right to dictate which god I should believe in!
Yep, we are an Islamic state all right. Argue all you want that this is not Islam. Open your eyes and look at Islamic regimes and what happens to women and human rights in Islamic paradises.

Is there a book entitled “know your rights in Islam”; I wish to get a copy of it.

I was told that the Holy Book is complete and all encompassing. Surely that would be our daily guide and a “know your rights” book? Let’s fight the politician’s version of religion with the Holy Book.

Even for someone who is a “non-believer”, I tend to believe texts from the Holy Book than politicians.

    clkhoo,

For me personally, there is no better text confirming the rights in Islam than the Holy Qur’an. However, there have been numerous books written on the subject by Prof Hashim Kamali that are worth reading.

    Good luck

Where are the muslim heading to? Am I right to say PAS and UMNO differs in their Islamic outlook. Each is trying to out do the other in islamic affairs. With the intro of the Islam Hadiri ?, is umno now fragmented into 2 groups ie the original and Hadiri followers??? If so we have 3 different groups, perhaps indirectly good for the country as the original breakaway may find themselves moving into the PAS camp.

On the ground voices were heard and remarks passed on this civilization Islam. Is there any confusion among the muslim as AAB is seen as if he is a prophet. Who has the right to change the islam originated from Prophet Muhammad.

I maybe a non muslim but if you do visit Kelantan you will that PAS are more liberal in their outlook and dealings with the non muslim especially the chinese.I have talked to many PAS state official and even had the honor to sit beside Nik Aziz to listen to his talk.
Never heard any racial comments, you chinese and I malay but how to better the lives of the population as a whole.

For non muslim esp the Chinese, do not fear PAS, as a true muslim they are obiligated to care for the non muslim.

Look at Iran, outside of Israel they have one of the biggest jews population and are allowed to carry on their business as usual. Any grievances are channelled to their representatives in Parliament. When the Shah was toppled the jews were told by Ayatullah you
maybe a jew but still you are a citizen of Iran. The jews are even allowed to visit Israel even though they are literally at war.

The muslim Prophet says: Acquire knowledge to as far as China. Well don’t have to go to China, there are plenty of Chinese here.
