Star online has reported that P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, R. Kenghadharan, V. Ganabatirau and Vasantha Kumar were picked up at various locations in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Seremban.
The report continues that Police said they have detained all five leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) under Section 8 (1) of the Internal Security Act and they will be detained for two years.

This does not fall under the definition of democracy.
I feel so helpless.
Isn’t there anything the rest of us can do about it? They may not be right or wrong but it is very wrong to deny anyone their rights.
Is there anything we can do about it?
How can one be so narrow minded to say anyone demanded sterling?
Vani,
Forget the likes of Robin.
There’s one thing we can do.
Or at least try.
Get rid of the government at the next elections.
We can’t?
Deny them their 2/3 in Parliament.
We can’t?
Why?
Don’t like the opposition either?
Find another candidate from civil society.
Or forever hold your peace.

When they locked up the social democrats,

When they came for the trade unionists,

When they came for the Jews,

When they came for me,

Haris,
U bet I m gonna deny them the 2/3 or even throw them out.
But ISA, can we do anything about it? I m no lawyer so I m not sure.
Do the people of Malaysia have to live with ISA all their lives?
Vani,
Let us resolve now to get rid of a government that has turned renegade on the people they are supposed to serve.
Put in a government that will make repealing the ISA its most urgent task.
We must turn this detention into the most productive tool to rid this country of parasitic politicians.
Else, their detention will have been in vain

Dear Haris,
Some 20 years ago, the fathers of some of my friends were arrested under the ISA (allegedly for secession bid).
I saw their pain. I felt it. It wasn’t easy to walk around as children of ISA detainees. You simply can’t understand what the hell was going on. What was their crime? Why were they denied their day in a court of law?
It hurts. Still does emotionally.
I also wrote to the detainees to give moral support. When they came out they told us gruesome experiences as the government’s ‘guests’.
Some of them never recovered.
Anytime anyone ask me to sign a petition to the Agong to abolish ISA, I will not hesitate.

I don’t know why some people still think our PM is a ‘no-brainer’ or some sleepy idiot. He succeeded Dr. M whereas many others seemingly brainer ones didn’t. All these insults about his intelligence seems to make him less culpable.
I think he is what the Chinese says ‘Disguise as a pig to eat the tiger’.
He is also a hypocrite par excellence. After 4 years he is showing his true colours.
As another Chinese saying goes, ‘Distance will reveal a horse’s strength, time will reveal a person’s heart’.

Dear Haris,
I hope your readers can vote and will choose any party except the one that has ruled us for the last 50 years. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt..tembak…tembak…tembak one, I mean.
So those of you who have not registered, the time to do it is now.You have to be registered at least 3 months from the date of registeration before you can qualify as a voter. Please do not wait and, more importantly, also make sure to turn up on polling day to vote for any party except UMNO-BN.
Beware of Rashid Rahman, the SPR top honcho because he may make you vote in Timbuktu or at Desmond Tutu’s parish. You must also ensure that your late auntie’s name is removed from the electoral roll. Otherwise, this ass l..ker will use her name to ensure a BN candidate is voted into office.
If you read “Sham Democracy” by PKR, you will know why and also why some 50,000 Malaysians marched to the Istana Negara to petition the King on November 10, under BERSIH. We want free and fair elections and equal access to the media and air waves.Save our democracy from incompetent leadership.

Aha…the ever dreaded draconian ISA decides to pay a visit again today. This was a very wrong move. The indians on the street are taking it to heart. One guy whom i spoke to told me this:”We were born the wrong color (as i am indian too). The government does not care about us. Look at what’s happening. We showed that we were unhappy with things and what happens? Attempted Murderla, ISAla. I feel like this not my country anymore.” I told him to vote wisely the next elections and he told me that he has been voting for the opposition the past two years but nothing’s changing. Very sad to see people losing their sense of belonging for their country.
Looks like PM has only got big ears but everything else seems to be of the XXS size.Well i hope these guys get some support from Malaysians who believe that human rights is for all colors. ISA needs to go. These guys inside there have families and children who need their husbands and fathers. I hope all those other fellows inside also get a chance to see daylight and have their day in court. I say no to authoritarian rule in Malaysia!

Please don’t give up.

Just a thought:
For the next gathering, can we all walk around KL in groups of Threes?
We don’t have to walk towards anywhere, we don’t have to do anything.
Just wear yellow and walk. Go shopping. Go to a pub or something.
Can that be deemed illegal?
Can the Gove or cops touch you?
BAG,
Walking three abreast and 6 feet between each group of 3 was what I suggested to the lawyers who were leading the march on 9/12.
Technicallly, a meeting of 3 or more in apublic place requires a police permit.
Doing it as you suggest would poke fun at this stupid law that should be repealed.
Another suggestion last night to was that we should deluge the police authorities with applications for permits whenever we are going to meet ( 3 or more ) up with friends in public places.

Dear Haris,
Last Sunday I was outraged, last Tuesday I was livid, today…well, I doubt there are any words in the English language that can describe the way I feel today.
I felt like lashing out, but that isn’t really a solution to matters, is it? If anything, it is as infantile as the government’s actions, though theirs is one that is both obscene and depraved.
I know exactly how Vani felt. After my anger ebbed away, I felt so helpless. Opinions like those expressed by RobinFong seems so common, and every time I see someone reading the newspapers (especially the NST), it saps me somehow.
Some say that the ruling coalition is winning now. Maybe that is true. After all, there is not much that anyone can do against the ISA.
Me, I say they’re spooked and scared, and probably very, very angry. While it does freak me out quite a bit, I do think that if we stick together, and push forward some more, the tide can – and will – change.
20 Cent,
You hit the nail square on the head.
They are scared.
If we stick together and push forward, the tide will change.

Of course my vote does not go to BN. But then again I worry. What if DAP and PAS do very well at the cost of MIC, MCA and Gerakan. UMNO just about scraps it. UMNO will sell thier backsides to get at their two-third majority which is a lot more sacred to them than any holy book. As for PAS, they have still not abandoned any notion of getting their Islamic State. A marriage of UMNO and PAS at that point as much as it is unthinkable at this time, is just possible. UMNO will get their two-thirds and PAS their Islamic State, not only for Kelantan, but the entire country. Maybe that is why Karpal never ceases to stop any notion of a DAP and PAS collaboration. And what about Keadilan? I’ve left that out as I still see them only as spoilers who will get for UMNO the additional seats taht they don’t deserve.

I have never felt so angry like today for a long long time. Thanks to our sleeping PM!!!
This is the biggest mistake of our sleeping PM by invoking the stupid ISA today on the Hindraf leaders ( not that I agree with them on all their issues).
Denying the people’s basic rights is definately a no no.
Let’s come together, people of Malaysia ,regardless of race and religion, WE WILL ,I repeat ,WE WILL bring down this corrupted BN government.
Let’s give our sleeping PM his retirement so he can continue his zzzzzzzzy.

I weep for Malaysia today.
RobinFong I absolutely cannot see what you believe in. I don’t care how much you disagree with Hindraf and their goals but the moment you say that they deserve to be detained under the ISA, you are also condoning Guantanamo Bay, the holocaust and the brutality of the Myanmar government. The common they share you ask? The trampling of human rights.
Speaking of which, I hope the recent issues forces the government to push the elections into later next year, because by that time I can vote.
I hope the government doesn’t think that putting the 5 leaders into detention means the end of things, because I believe it’ll only be the start of many things to come.

ISA on Memo & not the Surveys?
================================
The Memo is crazy
if we have not see others’ crazy!
It could not be 100% true
but un-equalities nothing less!
People abused not out of guess!
Elements touching are facts!
How much are right?
They worse not than those “surveys” praised?
Are they for for British or the world to see?
Or, the Surveys for Malaysian to believe?
British used ISA when there were Malay, Chinese, Indian to
fight!
Same for US, and others to fight enemies of outside!
What ISA in Malaysia to fight?
In 50 years where had it been applied?
Is blogs is not for fairness to rise
but finger-pointing the wild?
where are the minds for Human Rights?
where are those Hearts & souls for light?
Independency of mind been sold!!
Where to tell the kids to go??
or where Malaysia be post in UN HR to hold??
A law is a law when Politically it is not involved!!
And, Human Rights be the floor!
Do we have to appeal in the blog
if our grieves been solved
as a blog can be a Block
as can see in some of the blogs!
Those fight for grieve of themselves are common
Those fighting for others grieve are giants!
In Malaysian standard
those depriving others are common
depriving those fighting rights
are sad to feel being pride!!

It is sad when this is cooked by all crooks
To hunt down those with Rights to talk
to stuck those leading to hopes!
To shut the mouths of those who talk
but forget all eyes will note
that Fairness broke
with ISA to mop!
Not in the court
but by power that ignores!
Tears and sorrow drown the stars and moon
red and yellow had stripped off!
Tears and sorrow mess them all!!
What remain for the flag to hold??
When People are tortured to tiny!
How high the flag can fly?
or be seen in the sky?
Then dwarf can be giant to all??
Where are the mind to realize all?
Tears drop into the ocean of sorrow!!
Hearts rise to respect the Heros!
Dwarfs be out of sight from the picture!!

So now for Hishammuddin to say that he would use the keris again in 2007 as a protector of all Malaysians – not just Malays – is disingenuous. Any intelligent Malaysian can see through the doublespeak.
What is even worse – and insulting – is what he said about “desensitizing” non-Malays to the issue of the keris. Only a person with a supercilious attitude would behave that way. What he implies by that statement is that non-Malays must accept what he does, no matter how revulsed they are by it. It’s like slapping someone in the face and then slapping him again and again, and telling him that he has to tolerate it each time until he gets used to it. What arrogance!

What is this country coming to? Where ordinary people with ordinary lives, wives, children, mortgages and careers are locked up on a whim and a fancy. Were they hoarding weapons of mass destruction? were they gun toting fundementalist suicide bombing fanatics, posing such a dire threat to National Security that they should be locked up without trial? As I recall they were “armed” with pictures of Ghandi for crying out loud! Cant we do something, organise a petition, hold a candle light vigil, just anything to make this government realise that Malaysians wont stand for this.

Dear Paul Warren,
1. DAP would do well at the expense of MCA, MIC, Gerakan.
2. PAS would do well at the expense of UMNO only.
There is no way PAS + UMNO = 2/3.
As it is now, UMNO holds 110 and PAS 7. That’s 117 maximum. 117/219 is way off 2/3.
By the way, how many of us here wept or cried when Nik Aziz’s son and his friends were ISAed?
Did Haris got these much comments then?
Was it a different ISA, or were they proven “Islamic Terrorists”?
Did they actually said something like “We can’t rule out violence” then?

I am 50 years of age and have all my life voted for the opposition except last election ,was deceived like many of us that our “Mr.Clean” will do some house cleaning of the corrupt BN.
The four votes from my family will definately go back to the opposition. Not only that, I have stated talking to relatives and friends to vote against BN during this election.
I have printed many of the independant blog write up to pass to those who do not have access to alternative news.
Hopefully, after reading some of the bloggers write up ,these group of people will give their votes to the opposition.

RE : Paul Warren’s expression
Paul’s fear is a very realistic and valid one, because I ask myself the very same question. In light of recent events (and not so recent ones), cases of government corruption and cronyism, biased judicial setting, non-independance of media reporting, rigged electorial processes, abuse of police / military power, detention without trial, violation of human rights, etc etc etc … ALL are too evident – BN will surely loose my vote too.
But the question now is really this.
Is the Opposition ready?
Are they united enough to form a coalition
1) To bring down the current ruling party’s undoing as mentioned above, and not get caught in the same cycle of greed, corruption and nepotism?
2) To do away with conflicting new leaders of different political & economical views of governing the country?
3) To suggest names of potential/possible Opposition Representatives collectively and not opposingly against each other, for the parliamentary seats?
Am I jumping the gun?
No, the next Election hasnt been announced and the Opposition hasnt won, and/or may not win…But I think we should anticipate it so as the Opposition could position their candidates ready, IF they win. Ready the Representatives to serve the rakyat.
I think the Opposition is united for the 1st task…
Are they united for the 2nd?

Haris,
Found these ‘excerpts’ from the Aliran’s webpage.
I felt strongly that it should be made clear for all to see the gross injustice being practised by the ruling party and our current PM.
Views of Two Former Prime Ministers on the ISA
“The ISA introduced in 1960 was designed and meant to be used solely against the communists…My Cabinet colleagues and I gave a solemn promise to Parliament and the nation that the immense powers given to the government under the ISA would never be used to stifle legitimate opposition and silence lawful dissent”,
Tunku Abdul Rahman, First Prime Minister.
“The ISA is a measure aimed at preventing the resurgence of the earlier communist threat to the nation… During my term of office as Prime Minister, I made every effort to ensure that pledges of my predecessors, that powers under the ISA would not be misused to curb lawful political opposition and democratic citizen activity, were respected.”
Tun Hussein Onn, Third Prime Minister.
These statements were made in affidavits at the habeas corpus hearing of Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, in 1987.

Its strange that Umno youth is allowed to protest in the streets whenever it suited them along with their pre-approved police permits.
Its also strange that Hishamuddin’s act of waving the keris is not looked that a racially insensitive act!.
Its more of “Do what I say but Don’t do as I do!” with this government!. Hope the Malaysian rakyat wakes up….soon!.

I’ve never voted before because i never felt a sense of belonging to this country but for the 1st time i’m so eager to vote and that too for the opposition with the hope that BN could be thought a good lesson.
Only in this country one can buy recognition, a close friend of mine did it…paid a certain amount to rebuild a mosque(m not being racist here) and in exchange he got his “datoship”…from the pahang sultan!!! Tell me something; I always thought this recognition are given based on what one has done for the nation right??? Then again when there are ppl ready to pay the price why not eh? By the way I still adress the so call “dato” by his name…can’t bring myself to acknowledge his newfound status.
