Tonight, we will learn the outcome. The Barisan Rakyat may end up gloriously victorious and be invited by His Majesty to form the next government, or we may merely have broken the BN stranglehold by denying them a 2/3 majority. If the electoral cheating was extensive and successful enough, we may have been deprived of even that. But whatever the case, Barisan Rakyat has to have a game plan, going forward.

One of the saddest moments for me in recent days was to read that Lim Kit Siang had denied the existence of an umbrella body called the Barisan Rakyat under which DAP and PAS had agreed to cooperate. I can understand where he was coming from. The Chinese population still harbours fears about the PAS agenda. If MCA were given a chance to capitalize on those fears, DAP could lose big time.

And that is the source of my sadness – that such a political environment has been cultivated and permeates deep into the psyche of the rakyat. Such deep-held feelings will hinder the forging of a true Bangsa Malaysia.

The fault lies with both DAP and PAS. Just before elections is the worst possible time to be forming alliances. Such alliances always smack of being marriages of convenience. It is not fair to expect the rakyat to place their trust in such organisations. Thus DAP and PAS have had to pretend the alliance never existed. But those involved in campaigning know the real truth – that in fact, the cooperation between the two parties was remarkable.

What they have to do, now that they don’t have to posture to the electorate for several years, is to announce the “formation” of a people’s cooperation front, the Barisan Rakyat, that is designed to transcend the race-religion barrier and unite all of as Anak Bangsa Malaysia. DAP folk have to bring PAS people into their constituencies (and vice versa) and let the people see their real face. PAS and DAP have to work together on community projects to demonstrate that their cooperation is not merely an election gimmick.

DAP has to capitalise on the fact that PAS has endorsed the People’s Declaration and agreed to “build a government based on values common to all the great religions”. PAS has to assure non-Muslims that there is no hidden Islamic agenda, that PAS wants the government to be built on spiritual and ethical values that are common to all the great religions.

PKR has some strong leaders but, due to overreach, some are of doubtful calibre. There are also many questions about the unstated ambitions of PKR. There are fears that UMNO-style politics may creep in. PKR leaders have to work overtime to dispel such anxieties. Building a genuine working relationship with DAP and PAS after these elections is the best way to demonstrate their sincerity.

Political parties are not used to the idea of being overseen by citizen committees. In the pre-election frenzy, they may have agreed to such ideals but the proof of commitment comes now. Parties of the Barisan Rakyat have to form a government, shadow or otherwise, and each minister has to work with a citizen committee put together for that portfolio. Such citizen committees will comprise professionals and experts in their fields who can provide clear input untainted by personal political agendas. MPs who don’t have ministerial responsibilities will have to work with citizen committees addressing other areas of concern to the rakyat. Fixing of broken or clogged drains can also be on the agenda, although low in order of priority.

The other critically important matter to be taken care of is the registration of the Barisan Rakyat as a legitimate political entity with its own logo that will be used for future elections. Heck, if it can be ready for the by-election to bring Anwar into parliament, why not!

Then there is the matter of a common logo. There are many creative artists out there who can surely do better than I can. But to start the ball rolling, I have designed what could be used as a unified Barisan Rakyat flag and logo.

Bouquest and brickbats equally welcome. J

Oops Of course you know I meant “Bouquets and brickbats equally welcome.”

And that was supposed to be smiley at the end. I can’t imagine how it became a capital J.

The Chinese will need to overcome this psychological barrier and trust the other partners (partners, not just another alliance of convenience) to break the stranglehold of BN. DAP needs to do more to convince (not persuade) the Chinese. The other partners need to do more to help DAP convince the Chinese. From what I have heard and read, inroads have been made by Anwar and the PKR candidates in their speeches. How can PAS be more extreme than the body snatchers?

I believe Barisan Alternative has (note the singular verb) done well to help each other and to co-operate during this election. We will need to keep the ball rolling after the election, regardless the outcome. This is where activities need to continue with the rakyat, such as Bangsa Malaysia meets. And have brainstroming sessions among the leaders of PAS, PKR and DAP. It makes the rakyat happy to see them working together for the well being of the country.

To be able to appreciate your artwork, one needs to know what the elements and color scheme are meant to represent. Can you share with us the thoughts that went into this design?

  4. Haris…

I got a bad feeling about Kelantan. Kelantan must not fall to the hands of BN but MalaysiaKini & HarakahDaily have a lot of disturbing reports earlier today.

If their phantom voters managed to seal victory for BN, what can we do? Protest?

    I’m really worried. :-(

  5. Klaw Says:

    SV Singam,
My thoughts exactly. If we deny BN the 2/3rd’s majority, what’s next? I sincerely think that the people want to see a truly strong and united opposition that is capable of taking on the ruling government, so that racist politics can no longer be relevant in this country.

This is something that I will have to think about clearly for the next few weeks (if not the next few years :) )

Now that Pas,DAP and PKR have signed the Peoples Declaration,…can’t WE take off from there…spell out the broad programme initiatives based on that Document, and build on similarities than harp on differences…and this is where the Civil Society’s Role becomes more critical.
After all Civil Society was wholly respinsible for this move, and having taken that Critical move,CSI must continue to nudge the Barisan Rakyat into bloom!

  7. SV Singam Says:

Birdseye, my imagery is very simplistic. I am trying to retain the identities of the primary BR components to allow them a degree of comfort.

The Yellow Circle is the circle of the Rakyat. I have adopted the colour of Bersih which also happens to be the colour of People’s Movements in several other countries. I also use yellow to to symbolise our primary allegiance to the Agung, as enshrined in the constitution. A yellow moon should also not be too alien to PAS members.

The Red Arrow in the center symbolises the dynamism with which the rakyat will build our new Malayasia. DAP members should be able to identify with the stylised space capsule (we’ve already taken off and are now on course).

The Light Blue background symbolises peace and harmony of a less extreme tenor than what BN has been offering us for the past half century. The adoption of the PKR colour is not accidental.

The Green Border is a reflection of the moral and ethical values that will define the bounds of our operating model. These will be based on principles common to all the great religions. Islam, being the official religion of Malaysia, shall be taken as the beacon if these moral and ethical values.

As I said, these suggestions are quite simplistic. I’ll bet someone here who is artistic could come out with a really terrific design that will evoke strong feelings of excitement in ownership.

    Onward Bangsa Malaysia

I find this discovery amazing and flabbergasted. The fraud that is being conducted by the SPR is therefore true ! Click on the above image to enlarge. I have been cloned into a 81 year old Chinaman, with a name Yap Fook Sang. How did I do this? I keyed in my old sevice number here which is 3002553. I keyed in some more numbers within or somewhere around my batch of officers, which were 3002555, 3002557 and 3001617. All the guys are above the age of 70! These guys should be around 45-50 years old. In my case I got my service number late, as I was a ranker. This is what I call fraud. So why not we question the integrity of the SPR? This is what I got.

    Mr Harris,

I am an Indian, even if PAS forms the government and turns this country into an islamic country, it would not worry me as they PRACTICE CLEAN ISLAM, whereas UMNO they do not practice & adhere to the original teachings of the prophet. UMNO’s islamic country would be far worse than PAS.

Chinese should understand this.Fear not ( they should visit Kelantan first and talk to local chinese)

For the first time Out of 4 election, I have VOTED THE OPPOSITION for state and parliament.

I still like BN, but as long as UMNO is there its Opposition for me. They use the racial sentiments against Onn Jaffar, May 13, and may repeat again.

You deserve a round of applause for your service to the opposition and take a good rest from tomorrow.

Rest if you must but Don’t Quit in your quest for a Change.

All the best to Barisan Rakyat.

    Thank you

  11. Paul Warren Says:

The fraud has been played on the good men of our Military forces. Their names and identities have been used without them knowing. There will be no chance of any conflict when the first set of their identities is used as postal votes and the second set is used in whatever constituencies for teh phantoms to use their identities.

Obviously the Defence minister is quite happy with this arrangement as he has been surely quite a big beneficiary of this conspiracy. Except that this is the first time how the phantoms are created has been identified.

Next is who the individuals are who borrow the identities of the real people to go make the second vote? Mat Rempits? Students? Putera and puteri UMNO?

Of course if the Militaty men and women are also in this then I guess there is little anyone can do.

But I think they don’t know that their identities are being used. I wonder what would happen if and when they know.

  12. Temenggong Says:

Its too soon for a formal pact or coalition. Lots of issues to be ironed out. Pas has to make some changes to their constitution to allow non muslims to compete as candidates, so that all opposition parties are non race based.

There are not enough malay candidates in DAP which continues to project itself as a ‘chinese based party’. That sterotyped image has to be changed first. I am hoping leading malay bloggers like Imtiaz, Haris and RPK join DAP to contribute towards remoulding its image.

While at the same time Chinese, Indians and christians like zorro, Wee and others should join Pas to break the sterotype image of the party. The other adjustment is that PKR must first show its not a one man party. There should be a jointly agreed policy on defectors and ex members of the party.

Lots of compromising to do first, especially for Pas.

  13. Sharing Says:

I can only find out what I need today
    http://thestar.com.my/election/results/candidates.html

Anyone noticed the number of Candidates put in by DAP/PAS/PKR to the GE?
    For Parliament: 45/67/96 & State: 102/232/175
    Together: 147/299/273
    Had this happened in 2004?
Can this happened to PKR without all the Rallies and NO-3-corner fights?
If the winning ratio came along the ratio of their input in Parliament, who should lead BR?

Hopefully, they got 1/2 of the Parliament Seats
but will these 1/2 be in one yard or more?

For anyone to be involved in the “committee” of
    “Royal Commission on Electoral Reform”
    http://chinhuatw.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/make-you-votes-count-support-the-campaign-for-royal-commission-on-electoral-reform-rcer/
Please move this as a Topic to the BR committees and NO More People Campaign!

The Opposition MUST form a shadow party if they wish to get continuous support from the Voters.
They better show a joint-effort and Principle and Direction.
Or, the efforts of BR will gone!
They may drop the name of BR but they have to set up something similar to go and hopefully leaving a place for BR to continue as a Civil Society to go along!

BR has to seek the position before setting any further Strategy to go!

  14. vanaja panickar Says:

The Barisan Rakyat logo looks good and represents all the 3 parties. At this moment I am praying very hard that we win, or at the very least, deny BN the 2/3 majority that they are so desperate(what with the phantom votes and postal votes. In the event that we do not win, BR must keep on working as a united team. We can initiate programs for the rakyat so that they will know that BR means business, try to generate funds just like the donations that poured in during campaigning. We will not give up.

I think we should also check how the postal votes are distributed? Are they not supposed to be used only in that particular constituency? Can we not check how many people voted at a partucularly polling centre and then compare it to the total number that the EC comes up with? If more, where did it come from? Can postal votes be distributed randomly, is it legal?

  19. Unbelievable! Barisan Rakyat won Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, and Selangor! Imagine that!
I wonder if it will be dream come true, or a nightmare to wake up from… I really hope it will be for the better, or at least not worse.
