Yet another voice of reason from Pakatan Rakyat
April 9, 2008
The Malaysian Insider did an interview with PAS’ Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad. You can read it at Malaysia Today HERE.
Here are excerpts of what Doc Dzul said.
To the question ‘How do you see Pas working with DAP, considering the differing idealogies?’ :
‘PAS and DAP not only have different ideological commitments but perhaps one that are diametrically opposed, one entrenched in Islam and the latter in secularism.
But again, this is the beauty of democracy which allows you to differ and dissent democratically yet not necessarily destructive and inimical to one another.
Given the challenges and crisis confronting the nation and the broader common goals and targets that both PAS and DAP would want to achieve and realise, both have to size up to the tasks and place the nation and rakyat beyond partisan and ideological interests.
Incidentally, there are more common grounds to bring us together if we remain focus on achieving the shared vision of justice and good governance’
And then the question ‘Will the coalition hold?’ :
‘Yes, if we are relentless and resolute on holding it together. We have been mandated by the rakyat and they gave us 5 states and 82 parliamentary seats. Every time we want to call the coalition off, look into the eyes of the rakyat, especially the marginalised and the downtrodden section of the rakyat, how they have put their hope on us and could we ever disappoint them? You ask yourselves’
Finally, to the question of how a 2-party system might work :
‘Our democracy is flexible enough to accommodate for these changes and dynamics. Gone are days when the rakyat are only beholden to the Umno/BN, as if they are the be-all and end-all of power and provider. It is now the rakyat taking charge. They are the real boss and employer.

Way to go, Dr. Dzul! Things are getting brighter everyday. I especially like this part : `Every time we want to call the coalition off, look into the eyes of the rakyat, especially the marginalised and the downtrodden section of the rakyat, how they have put their hope on us and could we ever disappoint them? You ask yourselves’
Let us now see similar voices of reason from DAP.

The likes of Karpal should learn to emotionally react to the likes of Dzul and Husam rather than react to the traditionalist of PAS.
April 9, 2008 at 9:39 am
I am all for this man. He’s got the knack for saying the right thing. Hope the other leaders in PR will think alike.
April 9, 2008 at 9:47 am
He used the magic word “rakyat”.
Most others used “party”
If PAS goes down this path, they will own PRU13…
April 9, 2008 at 9:56 am
i see the light at the end of the tunnel.

i am sure that same reasonable voices will be the mantra of DAP. they are not as chauvanistic as portrayed and instilled in our minds thru lies and deceits by mainstream papers.
as an aside, i have been taking the stance that PR should refrain from accepting frogs hopping into the new coalition just to take over the federal government and instead concentrate on managing the 5 states won in the recent election. But, it seems that BN is not a government for all malaysians and are trying with all means to penalise malaysians who have voted against them. federal projects for the 5 states will be reviewed and curtailed. additionally, as part of their efforts to undermine the state government, funds will be channelled to agencies set up separately in the state and managed by officials from the federal government. its like a government within a government. the classic example is the appointment of village heads by the federal government which until now and rightly is the perogrative of the state government. the tourism ministry is embarking on the same mode. I am sure the rest of the ministries will be on the same wavelength. such duplicaion is a wastage of taxpayer’s funds. Moreover, such abhorrent behaviour from the federal government defeats the very essence of democracy which is the right to choose freely and without fear and should be condemned outright.
the behaviour of the federal government smacks of vengeance and populace of the 5 opposition states is now made to suffer for their choice. Do we allow such undemocratic and unfair actions for the next 5 years? haris, because of this, i now have my second thoughts about not going for the jugular which is to encourage the hoppers to facilitate the formation of the federal governemnt by PR. Your thoughts, haris?

Bravo!!
I knew my PRU12 vote to PAS should be worth voting!!!
April 9, 2008 at 11:30 am
It is a refreshing view from PAS. PAS and DAP are undeniably the two most ‘mis-understood’ political parties as their views and ideologies were too often ‘manipulated’ by the mainstream media. Even the leaders themselves are victimised for such manipulative reporting.
Luckily nowadays we have alternative media to get non-biased professional reporting. Perhaps, each and every leaders having their own blog to air their views instead of ‘crying unfairness’ over MSM reporting.
Beside that, I believe 2-party system will not be there if Umno and BN parties keep on selfishly harping on safeguarding their own race. I wanna see 2-party system that value multi-racialism and democracy, not one sided one.

Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad,
Your wisdom in answering the abovementioned is an eye-opener for many, including myself who used to be “evasive” when posting comments and articles on PAS related issues.
Have the rakyat at heart and nothing would go wrong !
TQ Doc.
April 9, 2008 at 12:28 pm
well said doc. Walk the talk and you will get our continued support. If only other PR aduns and mps think on the same line, PR definitely will form the next government.
April 9, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Let’s hope DAP and PKR will emulate these words of wisdom from PAS.
As Paul Warren said in the earlier thread “Finally, a sane voice!”, we in TPP need to continue promoting The People’s Declaration and its merits. Its neutrality for adoption by the PR coalition will become more obvious in time as long as Barisan Rakyat, in essence the rakyat, support and give life to it.
Yes, we’re the boss. And we want to be good employers, don’t we.
April 9, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Yes he is one of the better guys.
He has visited a church. Now I am waiting to see if he will visit a temple. Now that would be a clincher, wouldn’t it!

I am so proud that I voted for him in Kuala Selangor. In person this guy is not only witty but humble as well.
April 9, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Yes! To Pakatan Rakyat MPs and ADUNs, look into the eyes of the rakyat before you all call yourselves Yang Berhormats and also tell your secretaries and assistants that YB stands for Yang Berkhidmat NOT Yang Berhormats.
April 9, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I never expected this to come from our friend from PAS, But that matured thinking and rakyat above self talk is a refreshing change.
Go for it PAKATAN RAKYAT!!
April 9, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Malayamuda,
I thought only myself have that choice- migrating.
April 9, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Doc, if PAS leaders can hold their tongue on religious and race sensitive issues, then we are closer to our common goals. We need more level headed PAS leaders like you, Perak MB, Hussam etc., to rule the country because we can trust you better than the Untuk Melayu NO Otak cronies. We need good capable technocrats for government and not religious fanatics.
As a non muslim and Malay I was campaigning for many non malays, friends and strangers to vote for PAS. My tag line was UMNO has ANGKAWASAN and cant get anywhere because we have ROCKET and the BULAN. They all loved it when they heard this, from fishmongers to taxi drivers.
April 9, 2008 at 7:21 pm
YES! work 4 da RAKYAT!!!RAKYAT MALAYSIA
April 9, 2008 at 9:32 pm
I started to like this PAS party out of the blues as long they dont champion religion.
Religion is a personal matter, dont mixed up like rojak with politic.
As long the religion, race and politics keep miles apart,i believe this coalition of Pakatan rakyat will hold.
Just give a bit time for them to fight and settle down. They will be a moderator will born among pkr,dap and pas.
LETS KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE.
tHANKS,raJ RAMAN.
PS.HOW ARE YOU MR.SINGAM,AM I IMPROVING? (SHOUTING NOW)
April 9, 2008 at 10:27 pm
The BN government is increasingly looking like the Titanic. The mud slinging going on between Badawi, Mahathir and Razaleigh is leaving the BN regime in tatters. This is not helped by spineless individuals like Nazri Aziz and Zahid Hamidi who would cheer on anyone who is PM but immediately chastise the individual once he is no longer PM. (Remember, dear Mahathir and Badawi, “Melayu mudah lupa”.) Then, we have the Ong brothers from MCA talking trash while MIC and Gerakan are busy re-inventing themselves in circles.
We also hear that document and files have gone missing in states ruled by Pakatan Rakyat. Personally if you asked me, I don’t trust the BN government, the Police, the Judiciary, the AG, the Elections Commission and the civil service.
Due to this, I believe that Pakatan Rakyat must not waste any time to form the government. The BN government is now falling from within. If we as a nation don’t bail out from this spiral, we as a nation may end up in the abyss with Badawi and Company! We must have regime change by having a PR government in place. We must not let the BN regime stay in power for another 5 years because by the time the next GE comes, the nations wealth would have been stripped clean and all evidence involving the sins of the BN regime would have been wiped clean by then.
Some people are against the crossing over of elected BN reps to PR. They feel this is a betrayal of the voter’s trust. What I would like to suggest is why not, come April 28, if there are any BN MP’s who are disillusioned and dissatisfied with the BN regime, they can declare themselves as Independent MP’s and join the 82 PR MP’s in passing a motion of no confidence on Badawi and his government.
I think His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung, would not consent for another GE. Rather, the 82 PR MP’s can form a Minority government. Infact, this government can also go on to be a Government of National Reconciliation by having not only the Independent MP’s with them but also BN MP’s as well, so long as they are clean.
Therefore, there is no need to wait for Datuk Seri Anwar to get to Parliament for this to happen. With Datuk Seri Anwar by her side, I’m sure Leader of the Opposition, Datin Seri Dr. Wan Azizah will make a good PM. Time is of the essence. We must not let this opportunity slip away. Go for regime change now!
April 10, 2008 at 12:45 am
But once all these are over, you know once they are on power … what are the assurance that the voices will stay ? Ahhh I forgot , then if do the tongue twisting, we exercise our right lah kan to vote them out pulak.
April 10, 2008 at 1:53 am
Go PR!
Gosh, this is so heartening. To think we still have to put up with UMNO/BN mediocre morons when the PR has such dynamic leaders like Husam, Doc Dzulkefly, LGE et al.
[Btw, did anyone read about Azalina backtracking?]

temenggong “Now I am waiting to see if he will visit a temple. Now that would be a clincher, wouldn’t it!”
I think he will have no problem going to a temple. But it will not be fair to ask him to attend prayers or participate. Even Hindus have a problem with grasping the One-in-Many philosophy of Hindu theology.
Qur’an is emphatic about not having any other beside Allah (SWT). Hindu and Chinese temples, with their multiple images, will really pose a challenge.
BTW, I wrote “Chinese temple”. But is the religion really Taoism or is there another name for it?
BTW2, Hinduism is a name given by the British. Prior to that classification, the religion did not have a name.

Singam says, ‘I think he will have no problem going to a temple. But it will not be fair to ask him to attend prayers or participate.’
He does not have to participate in the prayers, but just stand respectfully at the back, and observe. After the prayers he could give a short speech or sermon on interfaith issues, etc., to the assembled congregation, and receive the parting gifts accorded to him as an important visitor. Gifts would include coconut, bananas, betel leaves and a shawl. Naturally he will be welcomed with garlands, conch blowing, drums and horns – normally accorded to any VIP.
(one Singapore christian minister refused to receive the gifts and in that process insulted himself and created lasting damaging relations.)
He needs to do this to break the ice!! And in the process free his muslim society from the ignorance, superstitions and mental bondages they are in. The taoists and hindus need to see tall, liberated muslims/malays in the society.
April 10, 2008 at 2:34 pm
That should be the way. However, we need a solid blueprint of governance, discussed, document-formatted.
This is good but it is not exactly official.

Btw do you consume halal meat imported from India, Australia, Argentina, etc and if so, should citizens in these countries show their indignation for allowing kosher food to be processed in their country, so as to feed the likes of you?
