Fitna is divisive. And the answer to it by some Muslims is to have more of the same – one Saudi blogger calling himself Raed AlSaeed replies with Schism, subtitled ‘the Bible version of Fitna’.

Muslims elsewhere have other similar projects in the pipeline. However, I trust that Raed et al will have no need to go into hiding unlike Geert Wilders & Co. (Theo Van Gogh stabbed to death and Ayaan Hirsi Ali requiring security protection around the clock).

Schism mirrors Fitna in culling what its fan base call ‘hate-sowing verses’ from the holy book of the Christians, and juxtaposing these excerpts against the video-maker’s selected footage. I see one difference though; I can’t recall any Christian man, woman or duped child today bombing innocent people to the cry of “Jesus is great!” and justifying his action as pleasing to Christ.

I don’t see either there being riots, marches to Saudi embassies, Saudi flags aflame, AlSaeed’s effigy afire or holy smoke billowing from enraged Christian nostrils around the world.

But there’s no doubt however that Schism is burning hot on YouTube. When I wrote this post, the clip had garnered about 77,000 views, and now as I’m giving my copy a last check, the number of views has doubled to 150,000.

Doubtless it was Fitna started this round of tit-for-tat. But if its release could not be controlled – with the Netherlands court ruling that Wilders’ visual collage does not incite hatred nor break any law – couldn’t reaction to the provocation have avoided helping the Dutch Parliamentarian prove his point?

Just as the Muslim knee-jerk is pro forma, so too are the platitudes attendant … blabber, blah-blah and bullshit. Reading certain copious comments here in response to Haris’ Fitna mini-series, one realises there are some wannabe gurus getting their faux saffron robe and knickers in a twist, desperately trying to cross-conceptualise what real people of the faith refuse to practice.

Wilders sourced material for Fitna from news broadcasts; and his beheading and execution sequences had been uploaded on websites by the Muslim perpetrators themselves or linked organisations. Nothing fictional, and it is also real enough that many do get off from putting up Schism kissin’ cousins (yes, there are consanguineous clips) on the Internet.

Islam’s image problem is real too. The Denial Syndrome that plagues the ummah is not alleviated by self-censoring Malaysian newspapers. Non-Muslim editors tiptoe even more gingerly on eggshells than do their Muslim counterparts when it comes to publishing opinion touching however obliquely on the religion of the Federation.

The in-denial is further exacerbated and perpetuated by such predictable 2-sen worth as given by MSM and blogosphere non-Muslim readerships pandering to the hypocrisy of piety. (Read Hartal MSM statement on the Malaysian media climate post-March 8 http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/81235)

It was realisation of the pressing need to be rid of pious hypocrites in their midst that sparked German monk Martin Luther’s Reformation and opened the long road for Christian Renaissance to its Age of Reason.

The problem with Malaysia is that we’ve got too many woolly talking heads – politicians and lalang writers who choose to take the wind of public opinion instead of shaping it – and preferring to play to the gallery rather than look at issues with stark clarity, as unpopular as the latter course usually is.

I’ve been cognisant of Haris’ strong Islam-as-I-say-tion views since before he started The People’s Parliament, and his going where angels fear to tread.

 So I hope he will be willing to mine whatever cache he’s gained in au currant cyberspace to push the envelope on contentious issues with the unflinching honesty needful. Otherwise we remain mired in crowd-pleasing-going-nowhere when we only encourage the sort of public discussion that takes the popularity road. This path will not get us out of our religious quagmire.

  1. Paul Warren Says:

    Can Schism be any more damaging to the Christian Faith than Dan Brown’s D Vinci Code? Or by Nikos Kazantzakis’s Last Temptation OF Christ?

    If these bozos get a hard on doing this or even seeing this, they would be sadly mistaken if they hope for any kind of response for a final orgasm!

  2. Surind Says:

    Fact! Violence in uncivilised & people fear it – many dont stand up & whack it at it’s source. Peaceful protest, civil disobedence, etc. is civilised though.

    Fact! There are less Christian fanatics, but there is a movement growing now in some developed countries.

    It is also true that in more developed western countries, freedom of speech & the freedom to criticise religion is more apparent & defended.

    Without freedom of speech, there can be no “true” democracy, justice & liberty!

    Fact! Many Christian biased, western governments are killing & oppressing innocent Muslims. So retaliation is sadly the reality in our times.

    Fact! We must fight against supremacy attitudes, racism, fundamentalism & extremism – for a better world!

    I strongly agree with some of things you said:

  3. We Christians need not fear what misleading, false discrediting videos, and stuff, that comes from Muslims. Our own false Christians already did much to discredit our faith.
    We are just placid when all this comes about as I have said earlier – God will judge the perpetrator/s who insults Him and His religion.
    If we punish or kill or maim such offenders then we will be the offenders that God must judge and not the perpetrators.
    If we say God is great – let us mean it and let God be the Judge, Jury, Executor.
    Let not man created in His image work on His behalf.

    If you want to discredit – there is a bunch of people to discredit – they have been working evil since the 1500s – the J*****s – V*****n A******s. These so-call R***** ********s do not worship God but Satan. Their leader the Black **** orders such evils done.
    PS I am not a C*******c.

  4. Daniel Says:

    Don’t expect a crowd to start pelting stones and eggs at the Saudi embassy anytime soon though. Thankfully, even fanatical Christians are more mature than their Muslim counterparts.

  5. temenggong Says:

    Schindler’s List was the earlier jewish forerunner to Fitna and Schism.

    Lets wait for the buddhist and hindu versions of Fitna.

  6. samad Says:

    Confused. We are not supposed to demonstrate, boycott products etc. From this article (and other responses) we are also not supposed to express our disgust by doing the same (i.e. producing similar video). We are just supposed to accept the shower of insults and discuss it ‘intellectually’. Probably we’ve not heard people saying ‘Jesus is great! when they killed or do terrible thing to others. But I will not dismiss the possibility of those being not reported in the media. When the Christian sect in US practiced raping minors and grooming girls to be sex slaves, I dont hear Christianity being condemned even though they are doing it in the name of the religion. So if you are not a Muslim, stop preaching to us on how we should or should not react. If someone wants to produce a video about Bible similar to Fitna to get off, like some people said, let them. Why condemn the action more than the cause of it.

    Samad,

    Help me understand why a non-Muslim ought not to share his or her thoughts on how Muslims should or should not react?

  7. raj raman Says:

    hi haris,

    Can u please look into my proposal to stop religion and politics and focus on medical needs of uthayakumar.

    I am not asking for rally and fight with fru/police.
    What i just ask is simple for you and your gang of bloggers to focus uthayakumar medication.

    I not even asking for their release.
    In the goverment eye hindraf five are traitor,but a muderer and rapist also given medical treatment.
    Your bloggers have the means and skill to divert people attention to uthayakumat health.

    Just keep the pressure on for medication.its it to much to ask for?

    Whats your stand on this haris.??

    raj raman,

    What do you propose, exactly?

    What exactly do you propose be done? What are you prepared to do?

    By the way, have you lodged the police report as requested by Waythamoorthy?

    If not, why not?

    Also, would you know how the other non-Hindraf detainees are faring?

    Yes, 70 of them, I think.

    Any thought about what we should do for them?

  8. shar101 Says:

    Hmmm.. I like this version, Helen.

    If you don’t mind, I will choose not to watch Schism just as I didn’t with Fitna.

    Having faith in humanity’s irrepressible goodness goes a long way to eradicate the hypocrisy of piety within our midst.

    Perhaps, less ad hominem statements and/or visuals will transpire when wisdom in thought is given a chance to germinate.

  9. Surind Says:

    A humourous take & related. Watch these episodes of South Park:

  10. Margeemar Says:

    Insignificant that’s what you are! Coward is your real name! This Black Pope crap can only come from a JW (not Jew), another Made in USA religious crap. We all know you ain’t RC.

    Friend, grow up and go to The Watch Tower and smell some fresh air. We have enough hate mongers and fanatics to deal with.

  11. Paul Warren Says:

    There is a presumption here that Wilders is a Christian. Unfortunately I have met and I do have more “western” friends who are not Christians and who don’t believe in Christianity than I do of those professing Christianity. Has anyone determined of what faith Wilders is or if indeed he professes any?

    The Schism response is sadly misdirected. Maybe there would be some who might feel irked, but surely I cannot expect anyone responding to it, as I have said earlier.

  12. noyawns Says:

    Nothing to get worked up over – I just went to view Schism – I think that no Christian will get into a twist – the video maker clearly says that he has made the video in 12 hrs, to show that one can misrepresent by taking snippets and string it together.

    Difference is: I doubt there will be stoning/bombers/etc outside mosques, Saudi embassies, etc over Schism while Fitna clearly generates a more marked reaction. I think that’s what that idiot Wilders was trying to show.

    Personally I believe the One God who is all powerful will deal with it Himself – puny humans get on with their puny lives.

  13. arifabdull Says:

    i saw this another version of Fitna, too. wakakakakakaa!

  14. Shiok Guy Says:

    I just did a screen capture of someone (Don’t know who is that) pulling out his sword and yell. Look very familiar kind of action.

    It remind me of one of our own “leader”. Check out the picture at my blog http://shiokguy.blogspot.com/

    Cheer..

  15. Discrimination69 Says:

    Discrimination69,

    There is no substance in Schism. Showing Iraqi war clips, Jonestown cults, National Geographic clips, re-enactment of Jesus cruxifiction rituals and Nazi clips, wakakakakaka The Iraqi wars motivated by economic greed and political motives , how to discredit the Bible? Wakakakakaka what a feeble effort.

    The screwed up human being can be brutal, this is not what we condone.

    Denial is a dangerous syndrome, people cant progress if they deny their mistakes or shortfalls.

    Bible states clearly to beware of HERESY and worst form of HERESY is 90% from scriptures and 10% twisted scriptures or falsehood.

    Christians know and believe there are many CULTS around that profess Christianity on the surface. All the mass suicides and incest and child rapes are works of the DEVIL, nothing to do with Christianity although they use Christianity as a cover. Christians believe in existence of the DEVIL.

    Just like Mormons and Seven Day Adventist, they are just cults.

    No sermons by Pastors or Priests asking congregation to strap bombs in name of Jesus?

    No kidnappings and beheading killings of innocent journalists in the name of Jesus?

    No soldiers shouting in name of Jesus?

    Verses quoted from Old Testament before the coming of Jesus. We learn of brutality from history and avoid it.

    A BIG JOKE movie, I like the National Geographic clips though, wakakakakakaka

  17. raj raman Says:

    very well and tune word by very well educated writer.

    you throw the ball back at my foot haris.
    As you know,i believe there are so many police report lodged by hindraf group or supporter.

    Does the report make any difference?
    You ask me what i prepared to do?
    I am asking you back,what do you want me to do?

    Neither i am a part of hindraf before or i joint any demo with hindraf,i am the silent majority.Now you tell me what do you expect from me to do?

    Whenever i send a message to you,i dont prepare any text.Its out of spur moment i type to your blogs.
    I just asking for some pressure group among your top bloggers to keep the pressure for medical needs.thats all./thanks
    MAYBE I SHOULD TAKE ONE FULL PAGE ADVERD TO APPEAL FOR THE POOR GUY IN NEED OF MEDICATION.

    raj raman,

    Forgive me for saying, but the problem has been a majority that has been silent.

    You say you are part of this majority.

    Hence I ask you again what are you prepared to do?

  18. Margeemar Says:

    It was rather sickening to hear the speech by the Crown Prince of Kelantan touching on the equality of all Malaysians, the rights of Malaysian to citizenship and of course Malay Supremacy (Ketuanan Melayu). I’m equally sick about people like the disgusting Ong Brothers of MCA playing up the race card on the supposed threat of Islam on non-Muslims.

    This Crown Prince needs to know that the Royalty must always be apolitical. What this guy did was to cross the line that separates the realm Royalty and Politics. What he uttered has really hurt the sensitivities of all Malaysians. In fact, his speech sounds like it was written by the 4th Floor Boyz.

    This Malay NGO clowns smell very much like an UMNO tool. These racists are actually trying to stir up trouble. The same is been done by MCA and MIC. You know what? I have a theory. Someone is trying to recreate May 13 from out of this chaos.

    My theory goes like this. Build up the racial and religious rhetoric to the fullest and get a racial clash a la May 13. Next, declare Emergency, have Parliament suspended and rule by decree. Meantime, put the blame on poor Badawi and have him replaced by Najib. Next, Najib with the blessings of MahaFiraun, rounds up the Pakatan Rakyat and Bloggers under ISA. This will enable UMNO to claw its way back into mainstream politics and have dirt bags like Mukhriz, Toyol, Zam etc. back in action! Now, the can say UMNO is truly DULU, KINI & SELAMANYA.
    Ever wonder why MahaFiraun want poor Badawi out? With someone like him around, more dirt will surface. Worse still, if you have a Pakatan Rakyat Government in power the likes of MahaFiraun will be investigated by the law.

    So, dear Badawi and Mr. IGP use the Sedition Act on these clowns who are stirring up racial unrest, now!

    Title: After Fitna , New Movie Schism ?
    Link: http://sagaladoola.blogspot.com/2008/04/after-fitna-new-movie-schism.html

  20. Don’t take this foolish act as a representation of Muslim ideals, just as Fitna shows nothing of the average Christian. I am Muslim and I’m against both these films.

  21. Helen Ang Says:

    GIVING ‘SCHISM’ A MISS? WATCH THIS INSTEAD!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    It’s a 2004 live recording of ‘San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair)’, sung by the original singer Scott McKenzie, aged 65.
    The song had been written for Scott by John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas, and released in 1967 – the Summer of Love.
    In that defining Flower Power year, ‘San Francisco’ the hippie anthem was simply ethereal.
    But I prefer this video clip, where Scott is now a bespectacled gent with silver hair tied in a ponytail.
    His heartfelt interpretation of the hit song here in YouTube – where he plays guitar – is mature and mellow.
    Shar, Farida, Birdseye and anyone over 50 must give the song a listen (grin!)
    Salam.
  22. Surind Says:
    It doesn’t suprise me how many people get emotional easy, irrational, “reactive” & go to the “blame game”!
    The more people whom take a “proactice” stand & “be the change”, the better.
  23. Surind Says:
    “Be The Change You Want to See In the World.” – Gandhi
    “Most of us retain enough of the theological attitude to think that we are little gods.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
    “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.” – Einstein
    “My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.” – Einstein
  24. bayi Says:
    The world id full of divisive forces trying to polarise he two main religious groups of Muslims and Christians. Religion is such an emotional force that people who do not normally attend churches or mosques and practise the teachings of their religions can show more zeal that those who do.
    We must be vigilant that they do not divide people.
  25. The problem with this is that much of it is true, albeit on a much smaller volume. My wife is involved in a “christian” church – and she’s lived there for the last 4 months. Due to the leaders translations of the bible (and an extreme thought control environment) my two oldest sons have not seen their youngest brother (who is with my wife) since December of 07.
    Make no mistake, there are dangerous Christians just as there are dangerous Muslims. While I don’t place all Christians in the same mold (I myself am one,) I don’t place all Muslims in the same mold either.
    Anyone that is willing to kill people, or divide families, or attack others because they are different is a problem. It really doesn’t matter if they call themselves Christians or Muslims. Whatever they may be if they have no conscience they are dangerous.
  26. Singam Says:
    Fitah and Schism are merely continuations of the Crusades. The enmity that began back then continues till today.
    The Christian Church has gone through its Reformation and Counter-Reformation and has grown up.
    Islam is struggling in the adolescence of its 15th Century (Hijra 1429). Until it goes through its own renaissance, it will continue to resemble the Christianity of the Inquisition.
    This is what happens when theocrats hijack the teachings of an honest Man of God.
  27. becakayu Says:
    Muslims should not be hasty and emotional when provoked by a man like that MP in Holland. Instead they should follow the cool, civilised steps that Christians take when facing similar situations. They are:
    1. Form a coalition of the willing.
    2. Shock and awe the man.
    3. Kick the fella out.
    4. Stay in the country forever.
    Very civilised.
  28. Khairie Says:
    I think some of the views on the comments table are warped. Everyone’s so wrapped up in either defending or attacking another religion, that we all forget one important thing:
    It doesn’t matter what religious extremism crops up, extremism is bad in any form!
    Of course there’s a problem with ISLAMIC extremism, and CHRISTIAN extremism, or any other Abrahamic religious form of extremism. The problem is the corruption of these religions due to the extremist attitude of certain groups. You say you don’t see Christians strapping bombs to themselves and blowing things up; I challenge you then to give extremist Christians a whole bunch of bombs and drop them somewhere near politically unstable countries like Palestine-Israel for example. Can you honestly say, that just because he/she’s a Christian, no matter how extreme he/she is, he/she won’t blow himself up?
    Give this whole ‘religion under fire’ issue a rest. It gets old. The fact is, religion can be corrupted and used as a powerful propagandic weapon. It is normal for politically unstable countries to use it to rally support, and it’s not unimaginable that others would try to use it against these groups. Religion, within the right context is personal and peaceful and non-invasive. So stop blaming religion and start addressing attitudes!
    Schindler’s List was the earlier jewish forerunner to Fitna and Schism.
    temenggong, are you sure? They’re totally different styles of film. Unless you mean that Schindler’s List casts a bad light on Nazis the way Fitna and Schism target Islam and Christianiy – but that means that Schindler’s List sides with the Jews, not speaks against them!
    SAY WHAT? AN ATHEIST VERSION OF FITNAH & SCHISM TO BE RELEASE?
    Frankcisco, they already have such a film. I think it’s called ‘History of the Soviet Union’.
  31. Edmund Says:
    I guess Helen Ang has never been to a bombed out abortion clinic and seen first hand what christian fundamentalism can do.
  32. Birdseye Says:
    Raj Raman,
    Malaysiakini reports:
    Selangor MIC Youth chief S Murugesan has called on the authorities to seriously look into the health condition of Hindraf leader and Internal Security Act detainee P Uthayakumar and provide him with the necessary medical attention.
    “It is the duty of the prison authorities to ensure the health and safety of those under their custody, a duty made onerous in cases where one is held without trial,” he said in a statement today.
    “The authorities must act on the advice of doctors and in cases where there is doubt, they must act and think in favour of the detainee,” he added.
    May I suggest that you telephone the Malaysian Medical Council and ask this organisation to tell the gomen how important it is to ensure that this man is accorded proper medical attention especially when he is under great stress because of his incarceration. I hope you will find the MMC will be interested in humane issues and not just their fess and charges.
    If you do not call, I will.
  33. lucia Says:
    what the heck i care with the movie schism or the painting of jesus and his disciples in sex orgy or whatever evil representation people want to make out out of my faith. no movie or painting or book whatever can shake my faith. no mountains or wild horses can shake my faith. and i trust my own christian friends are thus too – and we certainly won’t react like how THEY react towards the danish turban cartoon and this fitna movie by geert wilder. no, we won’t call for boycott or riot. we will pray.
    i will be unhappy and angry all right but at the same time i feel if they want to do it, we can’t do anything to stop them. heck, who knows, there might be lots of others ‘fitna’ movie or book whatever around which we know not of. and now that they had did it, and we knew of it, so what’s the big deal? the only ‘fatwa’ the church might issue is to intensify our prayers in church, at home, anywhere to pray for these lost souls for what they did and that hopefully in future such things won’t happen again (though of course it will!).
  34. barry Says:
    I agree with Paul Warren. The Muslim world presumes that the West is Christian and vice-versa. The fact is that the Western world has long discarded the teachings of Christ. Most angmohs I have come across are non-Christians and typically only attend church a few times in their lifetime, including the funeral service.
    Attacking the teaching of Christ has been happening since Jesus was on earth and continues to be. But you WILL NOT find Christians (not the angmohs lah) crying for blood etc.
    ++++++++++++++++++++
    Because it’s none of your business unless it hurts you physically. Who are you to tell people how to react??
    samad,
    With respect, when our forefathers thought it fit to make Islam the religion of the Federation ( please read Article 3(1) of the FC ), how Islam is expounded in the public space, in my view, became the business of every citizen of the Federation, Muslim or no.
  40. Surind Says:
    Watch this! “Moderate Muslims Especially”
  41. Satya Says:
    While I agree that Schism is misguided in thinking of Wilder’s film (and a great many other things) as an attack by Christianity on Islam, the film and its maker are otherwise quite sane and reasonable. Right at the end of the movie, the maker of the film himself admits it’s crap, and that he came up with the rubbish in just 12 hours. The real message (which you have to wait till the end for) of the film is ironically enough, not to make such films that twist and misrepresent holy scriptures.
  42. jonster Says:
    all this because of ‘beliefs’.
    i’m grateful when people identify themselves as ‘believers’ (they’re all equally divisive), i know to keep away from the hypocritic hatemongers.
    guys, you’re all going to be dead one day, so why spoil the bit between now and dying with all this petulance and hatred? just practice some reciprocity – if there is a judgement day, all else will be resolved then.
