The keris is here to say

The title of this post is a poke at The Star’s ‘Hisham: The keris is here to stay’ published Nov 26, 2006. Please imagine a cartoon strip panel and a blank speech bubble ensuing from Hishamuddin Hussein’s wide-agape mouth. Now what do you hear him say?
In 2006 too MGG Pillai, regarded as the Father of Malaysian online journalism passed on, and yesterday April 28 was the second anniversary of his death.
Steven Gan, in remembering Pillai recalled what this journalism great had once commented about ‘corruption in his profession’: “In the 70s, the journalists’ motto was ‘when in doubt, check it out’. In the 80s – ‘when in doubt, leave it out’. In the 90s – ‘when in doubt, wait for hand-outs’.”
The Umno Youth chief’s apology was a handout, and again mainstream media exhibited its cue journalism, i.e. the habit of awaiting nod and nudge from the powers-that-be. For three years, MSM had not dared ask Kerisham to say sorry but instead made excuses for him.
Pillai had in the form of the Net, adapted a new medium to his old school journalism of probing queries. Netizens taking over his mantle are asking the questions which MSM’s pathetic apologias omit.
The people ask (and Pillai would approve):
(1) Would Kerisham have ‘apologised’ if BN had not lost its 2/3 majority?
(2) His apology was couched in conditional terms. He’s sorry “if” the minorities found the keris-brandishing offensive. Well, if they were NOT offended, why bother?
(3) He gave a banana split, saying one sorry thing to Malays and another to other races. What’s his point, really?
(4) The Education Minister gave us not one, not two but three stinging slaps to teach us a lesson. Had he not felt apologetic after each strike?
(5) If he is willing to apologise, why is he not willing to say he won’t do it again? Even a six-year-old knows how to promise not to repeat an offence.
In my 2006 Malaysiakini column titled ‘Stabbing at our intelligence’, I wrote: “the Keris and Make Up episode is possibly this year’s gravest insult to our collective intelligence”, “Instead of clearly labelling the gesture as offensive, the wing’s unabashed apologists in the mass media would have you believe that the party’s preferred symbol is as harmless as a fruit peeler.”
Now we have the Sunday Star editorial two days ago, ‘It takes a big man to apologise’ – another such stab at the intelligence of Malaysians. It takes readers to be incredibly credulous. And you thought MSM would at least begin the process of reform!
The self-branded ‘People’s Paper’ says “Plaudits are due to Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for apologising …”
The paper says: “The apology, despite its qualification, is still commendable because humility is generally a vastly under-rated virtue among our politicians.” [the Umno politicians, why don’t you say so]
The paper says: “For now, it’s best that the issue of keris-wielding be put to rest with the apology.” [A-ha! We get to the heart of the matter]
Although Kerisham’s antics earlier made for rich political capital, Pakatan Rakyat can afford to move on whereas the ‘apology’ shows a beleaguered side backpedalling.
In 2006 because of MSM’s deafening silence, I’d written: “There are still those who do not hold the recent high jinks as requiring censure despite the clear and present danger posited by the Umno groupthink beamed live into their living rooms”.
Now looking ahead, let’s challenge the Umno groupthink which is continually shoved down our throats. The Ministries headed by the two-keris wielding cousins – Education and Defence – had mooted a national integration programme. Many believe it is the schooling system that should be up to the task, not boot camp.
The Education Minister once before promised a review of the National Service. The Star claims for him the virtue of ‘humility’. The paper tells readers that the Minister with his apology “has enhanced his reputation as someone who is willing to take responsibility and make changes to remedy the situation”.
Will Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein (as The Star addresses him) carry out his promise to review the NS programme? To take responsibility, to make changes. Concerned parents are waiting.

No need apologies – we don’t need it, coming from someone like you with no honour. Your father and grandfather must be rolling in their graves at the thought of having a decendant like you. You (and your C4 cousin) shamelessly (and illegally) used the keris to threaten the Chinese with bloodshed, at the same time lie to yourself and to your monkeys that you are protecting the honour of the Malays. And you have to gall to say ‘IF’ we are offended! I hope you will breed more of your kind. Malaysia doesn’t have a place for one such as you.

Haris,
I believe Kerisham is not apologetic for his actions. I can understand why he apologised to the non malays but why apologise to the Malays ?
Did the Malays ask Kerisham to brandish the Keris at the UMNO AGM ? No they didn’t, so why should he apologise to them for not being able to uphold Malay culture ?
I asked some of my Malay friends today what they thought of Kerisham’s apology to the Malays, they all said he should not have brandished the Keris in the first place cos the Malays NEVER asked him to do that. My friend went on to say that UMNO Malays are racist and you can feel it whenever you speak to an UMNO Malay.
Kerisham you are a dissapoinment for what your father and grandfather stood for. You are a total dissapointment to your almar mater, St John’s Institution.
Shame on You !

tat “apology” is a show and in order not to make his supporters feel degraded, he apologized to the Malay as well. and all the choice of words i.e. “If” etc…no sincerity at all.
he’s a bad actor and a bad leader.
i dun bother bt him now but reading the news “saint”ify him wif words like humility, big man etc is unabashedly shameful on the MSM part. big man? big my a%$!!!!

I know. I may have offended you. Although I have no clue why. Are you a moron? Or ultra sensitive? I thought I was just exercising my right by doing what I did. What is wrong with that? I mean, it is a symbol you know? It is a symbol of my virility. And as with any other man and his dog, it is within my right to flash it here and there. Even wave it. I mean, if I get excited, surely I have the right to do that, no? Why are you being so sensitive? Have I scared you in any way? It was so innocuous what. So harmless. Why would you be scared? I never …

Politicians are SH’T, dirty and downright smelly. There has never been a true blue honest politician in our history except maybe Tengku Abdul Rahman. He was always perceived as fallible, human who make mistakes. He never tried to boost his image. He admitted not doing well when young in his studies and (I am not sure) I think he admitted even to drinking sometimes. Yes he was human and not afraid to let his people know.

Malay culture is not running around amok with a Keris and kissing it in Chow Kit Road.
Malay culture is about being polite and respectful to all Malaysians. Malay culture is not about being corrupt, rude and abuse power given to you.
Malay culture is certainly NOT inciting racial hatred amongst fellow Malaysians !!

The problem is not the keris, it is whether the person holding it is mature and responsible enough to face the consequences if he fails. Just like a gun, it doesnt kill, the person using it does.
Hishamuddin should not uphold it if he cannot control the susbsequent reactions, like calls to bathe it with blood. He should have stop that remarks there and then as a leader. Obviously, he allowed that to happen and it showed that he is not ready to be a leader.
Same as the PM, in the Penang function last year, the Umno Youth put up the banner calling for downfall of Koh Tsu Khoon .Pak Lah should have stopped the ruckus then as it showed lack of respect for a partner in BN. But the PM , same as Hishamuddin showed lack of maturity and sense to control the situation. The defeat of Penang showed we dont need childish and in mature leaders.

You quote “The self-branded ‘People’s Paper’ says “Plaudits are due to Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for apologising …”
Maybe The Star does not recognise it or maybe they are made up of cold blooded shape shifting amphibians who care two hoots for anyone who rely on them.
But anyone who has faithfully only relied on The Star for their news, views, opinions, shape of the world, etc., must be wondering what the hell is going on.
After 3 years of telling these readers that Kerismuddin’s antics with his keris was something honourable, The Star is today praising his apology for those antics as something deserving of plaundits and selve serving arse licking drum rolls for what they describe to be humbling acts.
I just cannot understand what values The Star professess when on one day they only had platitudes and praises for threats issued by Kerismuddin. There was nothing in their views or their opinions that tried to even suggest otherwise.
Then, now when Kerismuddin supposedly apologises for those antics which were not so long ago praised or excused or explained away by Star they now go praising this apology like as if his antics were now all of a sudden inexcusable and, oh, so wrong!
Star..please make up your mind.
A lot of us already knew his keris waving for what it was and what it was meant to do for his immediate audience as well as the intended audience. We are all human beings quite able to not just see black and white issues but also very equipped to discern all the different shades of grey in between.
You disgusting oafs at The Star unfortnately lack humanity and certainly have absoltely no respect for your customers. The shit that you mostly write only stands when you assume your readers to be nincompoops who will buy into every shit you throw us just because it is in print and it sometimescomes through in sophisticated prose. As to sophisticated..that is using my standards la, not Helen’s!
The question for The Star is plain and simple. What is it that you idiots assume of us, the readers, when you write the kind of shit that you write? Maybe, Helen, you can expound on this just in case those idiots choose to miss this. I certainly would like to know what it is they assume of me, the reader, when they write the shit that they publish.
I know I write for myself more than I do for any reader. So it does not matter to me if any reader was to wonder what it is that I might be ranting about. But writers like Helen, and all those paid to write in The Star do so for their readers. So, if the assumption is that all readers of The Star are like our infamous Ah Beng, then The Star would be written in that fashion that Ah Beng is so familiar with. So, maybe I got to thank The Star for actually honouring me with a more dignified assumption, hence I don’t get to read the Manglish language in their papers.
Yet there is that assumption about me that they have without my permission taken so that it is quite alright for them to one day tell me Kerismuddin’s antics are commendable and on the next day with a straight face they tell me that Kerismuddin’s apology makes the same antics unacceptable. And I am supposed to think that The Star is respectable, honourable and can be relied upon to tell me the truth.

the keris i respect. it’s a malay pride. heck, it could very well even be a malaysian pride. but the manner and timing in which he raised the keris at that platform, and, to boot, followed by threatening statement by another umno youth nincompoop, i quote, ““Datuk Hisham has unsheathed his keris, waved his keris, kissed his keris. We want to ask Datuk Hisham, when is he going to use it? […] Force must be used against those who refused to abide by the social contract.”; HOW DID THEY EXPECT THEIR NON-MALAYS FELLOW BROTHERS & SISTERS TAKE IT?! what freaking out-of-context? dont freaking play semantics.
the ‘apology’ flawed because, amongs others,
i) not from the heart
ii) pitting our malay friends against non-malay friends. may start a blame game and cause even more uneasiness
iii) what’s with those ifs and buts???
iv) ‘brave act’ some call it? my foot.
v) ok ok. i’ll let it go. i’ll forget about it (soon enough i hope) but i will NEVER forgive, until he apologise from the heart. people could tell otherwise, dont he know that?

If a serious newspaper, filled with thoughtful, reflective, honorable writers take a position, however controversial, we can accept it as an opinion piece and perhaps write rejoinders to express other viewpoints.
But this is a third rate political rag with a thinly concealed agenda, masquerading as a regular newspaper (and offering its “brilliant” thought- provoking writing to the masses for sale).
Those who are not duped by this Pretender, will simply ignore the crap and seek intelligent discourse elsewhere. (they will also not acknowledge it as “MSM” with all its connotations of bigger, better, more authoritative)
Those who fall for the hoax, get pretty upset and start indulging in an utterly pointless debate – an exercise in futility not unlike an animated conversation with deaf mute.

My late grandfather used to say that once you take out the keris from it’s sarong ,it will claim it’s victim to satisfy the spirit of the keris . How true his statement , only GOD knows . What we do know that after 8.3.2008 , the Kerismuddin man seems to be blamed by his colleagues in UMNO and BN for being part of the reason of BN’s dismal performance . Maybe Kerismuddin forgot to asap and berlimaukan the keris before the UMNO assenmbly .
April 29, 2008 at 10:55 pm
They all use the keris to garner Malay ketuanan support before being elevated to other higher positions in UMNO Supreme Council.
This is UMNO style politics to show the Malays they fighting for Malay rights at expense of other races. Pure RACIAL politicking stunt.
MCA should use Jackie Chan in their next AGM to protect the Malays like what Hang Tuan and friends did for the Malacca Sultanate.
April 29, 2008 at 11:30 pm
.
Who doesn’t know that this keris man and his cousin the stupid dpm are having complicit in intimidating the non malays esp. the Chinese?
The unsheathing of the keris was served to remind the Chinese that their blood was to be spilt and be bathed upon by “them” if they were ever to question the “supremacist” of the malays which have now proved to be bogus.
Never mind the simple minded keris man apology …
People should instead pressure the stupid dpm to apologize next cos he is the root in all evils.
.

Why didn’t he said he will defend Malaysia with the Keris until the last drop of his blood?
April 29, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Geez, how did this guy made it to be a minister? Very good example of how nepotism and inbreeding giving birth to stupidity.
April 30, 2008 at 4:08 am
Malaysians are not bothered about how the keris is used. It does not instill anything. It is the arrogance shown by him and umno that caused the downfall of bn, serves them right too, and not its component parties.
April 30, 2008 at 7:13 am
What Muda said rings so true.
Don’t simply play play with something you don’t understand.
Ketuanan Melayu is something bigger than UMNO, something they don’t understand.
The Raja-raja of today (including RPK) show the true spirit.

Honestly speaking , I don’t feel threaten by keris. In fact , I respect it and take it as a pride of Malaysia heritage and culture. It’s just the motives of Hishamuddin who take this keris into a show. What are all these monkey circus shows business?! Firstly , the raising and kissing keris show and then apology. Why started all these in the first hand? I felt threaten by how stupid and immature our education minister because he is given a job which is one of the priority for country’s advancement. How’s he going to handle his job as an education minister with all these impractical show and mindset?
He had said that he is doing all these to strengthen malay. Hello? does it work or should I say is it common sense?! Why not he think of how to put the system back to right track. Do think and use common sense to acknowledge that a spoilt brat with smooth journey of life can hardly face the challenges and be successful(lead a meaningful life) . He is so well protected since young that he don’t know how to handle or understand the way of life which is naturally fill with ups and downs. Are we Malaysian ready for globalization? Other countries are silently working towards it , are we? Or are we so stupid that thinking the world will wait for us just like we think the other races will wait for us with restrictions imposed in the systems? It easily backfires.

Hey, give the man some credit – he just lost even more respect among the Malay ultras who see him as a cowardly traitor, and the Chinese cynics who see him as insincere!
Anyway… Posters 2 and 19 (I never get tired of this) at Malaysian Politics Motivational Posters. Enjoy!

Scott,
Here’s The Star report on Episode 3, headlined ‘Keris tradition to continue’.
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/10/30/nation/19317957&sec=nation
“Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said there was no need for the movement to be apologetic or defensive about it. He believed there was “nothing sensitive with carrying on” the tradition started by the movement two years ago. “I feel it is important we continue to do it so that the issue becomes de-sensitised over time.”
Only less than half a year ago, Kerisham was insistent that we’d better get used to his long blade thrust in our faces like the middle finger – ‘de-sensitise’ ourselves because he sure as hell would carry on until we did. That is if March 8 had not happened.
This is the context of his act. When he raised his weapon, he was unequivocal in his assertion that Umno Youth would take action against those who opposed the movement’s proposal to revive the NEP or prolong the NDP or whatever the policy has incarnated into. The other races were implied to be the enemy.
And this takes the cake: Now Kerisham says whether it will be brandished or not this year is up to Umno Youth to decide.
And the icing! Bernama reports: “I also do not wish for this issue to be prolonged and don’t make it a political issue because it is not related,” [Badawi] said, adding that it also showed Umno’s willingness to take corrective measure in the context of BN brotherhood.
Meaning, the Prime Minister says that you and I must not talk about Kerisham’s apology anymore.
