Helen had an afterthought :

Here’s Helen’s proposal:

Let’s compile now a dossier of the known episodes of ‘identity theft’.

Then we’ll collate a chronological list – sort of a ‘wiki’ with a précis (summary of incident) and links to the clarification made by the affected parties. After which, we’ll ask the good offices of a blogger to permanently host the page. A blog carrying a Malaysian directory, e.g. Sopo Sentral would be the best choice to do this.

Want to pass the word around? And also suggest ways we can curb this mischief?

On Jan 24, 2008, I received an e-mail purportedly from Rustam Sani headed “Help Needed!” The e-mail said ‘Rustam’ was stranded in Nigeria because he lost his money, passport and other valuables, and asked for money to be wired.

Even though the e-mail address was indeed Rustam’s, I did not for a minute believe the message.

In February, the false communication was cleared up by Pak Rustam himself with his explanation circulated via e-mail, as well as in a blog posting.

http://karya-merdeka.blogspot.com/2008/02/new-blog-to-replace-suara-rakyat-vox.html

The real Rustam said: “What happened was that some people with nothing better to do had hacked my Gmail account and changed my password to enable them to use it to write to my friends whose email addresses are in the address book.

“Many such friends have indeed received hoax emails asking them to send cash immediately … I hope none of my friends and readers of my blogs have been duped into sending cash to ‘rescue’ me from that African country with enough problems of its own!”

Pak Rustam passed away on April 23, al-Fatihah. One post he wrote last year ‘I am not an ‘objective’ blogger – and not apologizing for ithttp://suara-rustam.blogspot.com/2007/09/i-am-not-objective-blogger-and-not.html left a deep impression on me, and I’ve returned to it again and again.

But Anil Netto has paid a better tribute to Rustam, one of Malaysia’s foremost ‘public intellectuals’ than I ever can, here. http://anilnetto.com/2008/04/23/malaysias-leading-public-intellectual-rustam-sani-passes-on/

These thinkers have immensely enriched Malaysian blogosphere and for me personally, the most thoughtful and measured voice worth listening to is lawyer Malik Imtiaz whose blog is ‘Disquiet’. A new blogger I’ve recently bookmarked as favourite is Dr Mus, whose writing – as I’ve told a friend – is “like a glass of warm milk … wholesome goodness”. http://anilnetto.com/2008/05/05/farewell-blogger-rustam-welcome-blogger-mustafa/

A downside though is that bloggers can fall victim to impersonation because of the public nature of their writing and the free-wheeling nature of ICT.

Zorro, the kolorful K’Temoc, Hafiz Noor Shams (‘the_earthinc’) and others have been impersonated before. It is certainly unethical of individuals unknown to take on the public identities of people who have some cache to their names.

I hope that the Anonymous who does this sort of thing would write in their own names and also refrain from sending mischievous e-mail using a created e-identity that pretends to be the better-known writers. Please, believe in yourself. If your arguments are sound, you are worth listening to and your views are worth an airing – in your own name!

If not, then you’ve only been malicious. Not nice.

Hey, cool! Haris has filed this post under ‘Friends’, how apt.

    SUGGESTION: A BUDDY SYSTEM?
    ___________________________

Rustam says that after his Gmail was hacked, his account was rendered useless, meaning he was not able to access his blogs because Google had integrated the entry functions.

In diving, scuba divers go in pairs. So how about we create a ‘Buddy’ logo-network and encourage each blogger to put it up for the purpose of “in case of emergency, please refer xyz blog.”

On any blog, there’s usually an ‘About Me’ page with particulars like the blog owner’s contact e-mail, though bloggers would not usually make public their phone numbers.

Let’s use People’s Parliament as example. If Haris was suddenly incommunicado for whatever reasons, then this blog cannot be activated by anyone else for updates.

But just suppose for example that Haris designated ‘Disquiet’ as PP’s Buddy blog, then if anything should happen to this blog administrator, then readers should divert to the Buddy blog — the logo will attach name & url — to find out the latest

(e.g. Imtiaz posting that Haris is being held by police, say) or to direct e-mail query to the buddy blogger (What’s happened? Stranded in Nigeria? Had a heart attack? Bye, struck lottery and sailing the Mediterranean? etc).

    Just a thought…

    Helen,

Have made arrangements just in case, not by choice, I do go incommunicado.

  5. heh. this will be fun. I’ve always wanted to do a police report but couldn’t find the time to do so.

But I’ve contacted TMNet and they say if we have a police report as well as the IP address and the time stamp, the impersonator could be traced. I do keep record of cases involving me and have gotten the IP and the time stamp. If anybody wanna do a police report, do holla me!

I’d like to screw the impostor too!

Hafiz has more on this here – besides himself and the others named in the post, me, Bob Kee, and a few others have been repeatedly targeted in the past. Hafiz actually filed a police report but no action was ever taken:

  8. Birdseye Says:

    Like that ‘kopi o’ guy/gal.

  9. Helen Ang Says:

    Dear all,

I’ll do the compilation of the cases then. Just spread the word & we’ll use this page as Drop-off/Collection Point for the info, before I write it up properly.

K’Temoc has contacted me. He IS most certainly kolorful — uses neon green, flourescent yellow & pyschedelic pink fonts. A Klingon sense of colour?

Hafiz, do you notice that police paperwork is just that?

Zorro’s case was at Mahaguru’s, I’ll check the details to refresh my memory. Q: Where do we place nicks that a particular person can’t claim proprietory rights to, e.g. Marina M, but meant to suggest someone famous?

John Lee, do you ever use the nick ‘leemk’? Maybe in pieceing together this one, we can have a section sorting out the doppelgangers too, like kaytee’s.

Haris also pointed out to me another Nigeria-like scam. Shall we have 2 categories then? (1) for-profit scams & (2) hoaxes/fraudulent masquerade

Birdseye will need to elaborate. I can’t place his.

  10. johnleemk Says:

    Helen:

I’ve never used the nick “leemk” before, to the best of my recollection. It’s usually not hard to tell if something’s written by me, but anyone who is in doubt can always email me to double-check.
