God, is this a sign?

August 17, 2008

16 years old and in Form 4, I was once caught climbing over the gate to get into school during school hours. I was completely drenched from a storm that had just stopped.

Truth is, some two hours before, sensing that a storm was looming, I climbed over the same gate to get out of school, then climbed over the Merdeka Stadium gate ( which was about 30 feet away from the school gate ), made my way down to the middle of the football pitch, sat down and waited for the storm to come.

And it came, leaving me with drenched and with this awesome sense of being one with Mother Nature.

Headmaster Victor Gopal did not buy this story, though. Three strokes for being late for school, so he thought, and another three for lying to him!

That’s how I felt yesterday, a little after noon, when rain came pouring down after the candidates for the Permatang Pauh by election had been announced and we were all making our way back to our car, abandoned like that of many others, on the highway about a kilometre or so away.

Drenched as I walked back with Benny, Arthur and Zorro, I thought back to the following verse of the Holy Qur’an :

‘Remember He covered you with a sort of drowsiness, to give you calm as from Himself, and he caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to plant your feet firmly therewith’ - Surah 8 verse 11

I found myself silently asking, “Lord is this a sign that Your forces are with those who will soon go to battle to bring justice and equality to this land?”

And almost instantly, my thoughts went to the following

‘… God never changes the grace He has bestowed on any people until they first change that which is in their hearts. God is Hearer, Knower’ - Surah 8 verse 53

___________________________________________________

Zorro, TV Smith, Arthur, Benny and I left the budget hotel at Simpang Ampat together with RPK and others at about 7.30am yesterday, headed for the PKR centre, from which we were then to make our way to the nomination centre.

Enroute, Zorro was alerted that traffic to the nomination centre had become chaotic.

I was not prepared for what I was about to shortly witness.

As we got to about 2 kilometres from the nomination centre, traffic on the highway had ground to a near halt.

A kilometre and about 20 minutes later, it became obvious that the car was going nowhere. The others got out and started to walk. I found my spot on the highway, where vehicles had been abandoned three abreast amidst shouts by drivers abandoning their cars that ‘Nak saman. samanlah’ and ‘Takut apa? Tak lama lagi kerajaan baru’.

Caught this shot from the highway after abandoning the car.

As I reached the main road that would ultimately lead up to the nomination centre, caught sight of this now all-too familiar sight.

And this, now too becoming very familiar.

Barisan Rakyat, too, were there.

The Pakatan Rakyat crowd outside the nomination centre perimeter fence filled up the entire area and brought with it a carnival-like atmosphere with music, dance and mask and all.

There was not a single BN flag in sight out here.

On the field within the nomination centre perimeter fence, the Pakatan Rakyat supporters were in similar mood.

This group of Pakatan supporters came up with a re-worked game of badminton. The object was only to ‘SMASH’.

As they smashed the shuttlecock, you could hear them cry out loud, ‘Smash ISA’, ‘Smash Najib’, ‘Smash Rosmah’, ‘Smash BN’.

Speaking of BN, these are the best photos I could take of the BN corner of supporters.

These were taken whilst balancing precariously from up a tree.

These photos were taken at ground level from as close as I could get to the BN corner.

And these photos of the BN corner were taken from the Pakatan corner.

My estimate of numbers?

BN : 3,000 – 5,000

Pakatan Rakyat : 50,000

At about 11.40am, the elections officer announced that there would be three candidates for the parliamentary seat of Permatang Pauh, to be decided on 26th August.

It took quite a while for the crowd to start to clear.

And then the blessed rain came pouring down.

Haris, do you remember the same cleansing rain after the Penguin Walk in Putrajaya?

And by the way, someone climbed into my compound and they stole, of all my clothes hanging and available, only 2 items – my Pakatan Rakyat T-shirt and my Hartal T-shirt!!!

    2 orders, please.

    Farida,

Told you the dogs were useless!

    2 T-shirts coming your way.

And, yes, I remember that wonderful drenching at Putrajaya.

  2. su Says:

Haris, you said we are people trying to change, to try and bring about justice in this land.

May I add, “There is no try. There is only do, or don’t do”.

Let’s just do it! (Borrowing from Nike)

    ps: Wish I was there.

    su,

    Thank you. i stand corrected.

Yes, wish you were all there. Photos can only convey so much

  3. This is certainly the correct way, we (the people) should humble ourselves pray and seek HIM (our God)AND HE will come to our aid. Amen to that, brother.

    Richard Huang,

Would also help if people left their ivory towers and came forward to be counted on.

Remember the adage that God helps those who help themselves. And by this, I do not think is meant ‘just pray’

I guess this verse apply to the majority 50k crowd? Who is the satan?

Anyway, I’m waiting for that rain with lightning to strike….

… for a very long time, since it include families and descendants.

A good start for a better Malaysia, but I am sure those people in BN has something up to no good up their sleeves. They are cash rich with our tax money and they can do ‘things’.

Puteri Umno has claimed that several men wearing Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) T-shirts and carrying the party’s flags fondled their buttocks as they gathered here during the nomination for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election tod

  9. wudan Says:

I have a good vibe things will turn out the way it should after all. The ‘hujan rahmat’ not only came down during ‘penguin walk’ and in Permatang Pauh yesterday.

Remember also the huge thundesdtorm shortly after noon on November 11 and after that it trickle to a drizzle to allow ‘the Rakyat’ to march towards Istana Negara?

Heard a funny thing at the nomination centre yesterday. “Kerajaan BN adalah kerajaan ‘Barang Naik’. Apa yang tak naik kat Malaysia ni? Semua naik. Hanya hujan yang turun. Kalau hujan tu naik? Tak tahu la saya”.

    Hidup! Hidup! Hidup Rakyat!

  10. Dear Haris

I am so glad that you recovered from your rhinitis just on time to witness this historic moment and shared it with those of us who could not make it to PP.Thanks, bro!

Yes,I shared your belief that rain is indeed a good omen from the good Lord.To Chinese, rain means water.Water means wealth.Wealth means prosperity. It is time for Malaysia to be prosperous again after having been run down for 50 years. If this heavy downpour is accompanied by thunder and lightning, even better!Strike down all those evil forces and make them run helter-skelter!

This PP by election is not only for Anwar or PKR.It is for all of us who are sick and tired of BN misrule.I hope if Anwar will be our next PM,he is will be a PM for all Malaysians.I think,Haris,we can finally have the luxury to dream and hope again……

All Malaysian Citizens of Permatang Pauh you are the Foremost Agent of Change, please vote and give the DSAI the largest majority possible to curb Inflation, Corruption and the urgent need for change to the Present Fiasco of the dirty, corrupted and rotten BN Government who betrayed all Malaysian Citizens of all races and also with their suppression of the MSM, who have no choice but is forced again to be biased & spinning lies in their reporting all over again.

The Sodomdollahbodowi Kiasu PeeM & the Sodomnajeepgazakaltantuya Kiasi DPeeM are now both very corrupted power crazy desperadoes now under great desperate pressure within Umno and then also by all the Malaysian Citizens reading but not believing the suppressed News from the MSM for what they have done to Malaysia and in order to divert attention from themselves they have to initiate deflection of the great pressure by charging DSAI for Sodomy and in order to get rid of him at all costs from entering Parliament and put an end his planned overthrow of the present corrupted regime in order to cling on to their own posts uncontested.
    - Hide quoted text -

Why both the Kiasu PeeM and Kiasi DPeeM must go now because these liars who blocked and spinned lies & deceits in the MSM of the non-existent Oil Subsidies and hike the fuels prices to revenge against the Rakyats for their Poll Defeats in losing the 5 States & 2/3 majority in Parliament, cannot rule for long as they have destroyed the BN and lost the trust of all the Rakyats??? This is why Tun Dr. Mahathir is always correct, they must be removed with a surgical knife immediately internally or externally.

Why the Malaysian Police is more interested in the allegation of DSAI than those against of DPeeM Najeeb??? Also, the Malaysian Police has now been tarnished by not serving the Rakyat’s interests but instead becomes the tools for the Kiasu BN to cling on to Power by bullying the ordinary citizens fighting for their basic rights!!!

Also, why hasn’t the police found the source from where did the C4 came from and the culprit C4 expert who placed the charges and detonated the C4 on the Mongolian Woman, there could not be many real sources of the C4 and nor are there many C4 experts in Malaysia unless there is a conspiracy to cover up. Also, the Immigration Entry record of Altantuya’s coming into Malaysia was deleted but the Police did not get the Immigration Personnel Culprit who has had the access into the Immigration Computerized System for the Entry Records to have done this in his conspiracy with the Murderers, there could not be many who have authorized access to these Entry Records. The Malaysian Police has now become the tools of those in power to suppress the truths even Murder.

The Malaysian Police are all not only bullying thugs but also all are cowards who are cowed by the mighty high ranking BN politician and are cowed into covering up for him. The Kiasi DPeeM has been denying that he ever met, nor never met Altantuya.

The Malaysian Police are nothing but all bullying thugs who know how to bully the ordinary citizens fighting for their basic rights like fighting for the access road in Cheras and also bullying the ordinary citizens who recently protested the fuels price hikes, which did have a domino effect resulting in price hikes in foods and essentials, which should not have been hiked in the first place as well because Malaysia is the nett producer and exporter of Crude Oil and we should be enjoying the windfall profits from Crude Oil like all Oil Producers and Exporters if the Country’s resources are not badly mis-managed by the greedy, corrupted, incompetent & moronic high ranking Kiasu BN politician who helm the BN Government to hike the fuels prices not out of necessity but out of greed in order to plunder, cheat & rob the Malaysian Citizens of their Purchasing Power & reasonable cost of livelihood in revenge for their GE12’s losses to the opposition. Throw out that despotic moronic rotten tyranny soonest possible to stop the rot now otherwise Malaysia’s wealth could be decimated in no time with such chronic rotten tyranny. So therefore in order to desperately cling to Power they now attempt to use the Police to do their bidding by whatever dirty tricks and cook up false evidences & to hide PI Balasubramaniam, & to put RPK & DSAI away to save themselves harmless by their under-handed tactics shamelessly as can be seen by planting Saiful to work for DSAI in-order to trap and remove him at the slightest chance. Where has natural justice in Malaysia gone, perhaps most probably gone to the dogs, if Kiasu BN remains in power??? Probably perhaps that only justice will be done if there is a Royal Commission of Enquiry called-in to investigate these cases.

Also PAS was not born yesterday to be taken in by the Kiasu Umno’s ploy to make use of the full support PAS is getting from the Rakyats of all races because of their present status in the fold of their membership in Pakatan Rakyat. If they leave Pakatan Rakyat to join the Kiasu power crazy Umno in an evil alliance it is obvious their popularity will be decimated in no time. No ordinary Malay, Chinese, Indian or other minor communities will ever benefit in this chaos unless except otherwise they are the cronies of Kiasu BN or Umnoputras ok???

See for yourself whether the Kiasi DPeeM of Malaysia is lying that he never met Altantuya:-

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTi1l8BV1HM

Najib lied about NOT meeting Altantuya.

See attached pic yourself. Yoube the judge.
She was blown to bits by C4.WHY?
All of them, yes everyone involved in the murder are

    connected with Najib.
Yet he said he is clean. Wakeup,….. Bodoh.

Great Photo journalism collection especially those of the BN sector.

Anyway cheers, take care & keep up the great work Bro.

Ah… Victorian… I should have guessed as much, bro. :)

Good coverage of the nomination, and yes, despite the rhetoric you hear, and unless the forces of undermining minions decide to rear their ugly heads, the scenes definitey indicate where the rakyat’s support lies.

While I still have my misgivings about a certain component party within PR being sincere in making this country a better one for ALL, I am hopeful that a victory here will be a start towards a more inclusive Malaysia, where citizenship alone becomes the criteria of inclusion… and where no one included gets relegated to becoming children of a lesser god.

The path to a better tomorrow is frequently difficult, and sometimes the heavens do pour, but only to remind us to be appreciative of the difficult journey, once we get to our destination. The difficult journey a reminder to cherish what we have so painstakingly achieved.

    I am hopeful.

Wah.. it this the new kind of govt that we really want?
Where people can park anywhere and disregard the rule or law? Will the new govt (if it does come to power)not saman any offenders?

Sounds chaotic & irrational to me. Kinda shows the mentality of the supporters doesnt it?

    No2chaos,

Enroute to P. Pauh, one has to pass Bukit Merah. It has a wonderful lake. Go jump in it.

You asked : Wah.. it this the new kind of govt that we really want?

Response : No, this is the new people power that we have. Don’t like it? The lake awaits you.

You observed : Sounds chaotic and irrational to me. Kinda shows the mentality of the supporters doesnt it?

Response : Yes, the mentality of people who will no longer tolerate deliberate road closures to frustrate the rakyat. Dont like it? The lake awaits you.

  16. Paul Warren Says:

    Great job.

But I want to log this in before our Malaysian Shuttler Lee (whatever) goes for gold in another 3 hours or so.

The BN government led by Abdullah Badawi will shamelessly hijack this victory for the purpose of capitalising on this victory by Lee. (I am of course presuming that he will win tonight).

If they give him all the glory, make sure he comes back before the elctions and also give him land/house etc on top of the RM1,000,000, we can all be sure that this is to basically buy the Chinese votes in PP.

I guess, in their estimation, the Malay vote will be split and cannot be counted on. So they got to depend on Chinese and Indian votes to deal them in.

But i would like to remind the UMNO morons. After all they are the ones who keep saying and repeating it. This Gold for Malaysia, if it comes, comes from a PENDATANG as far as UMNO is concerned. AS for the rest of us, this Gold is from an anak bangsa Malaysia.

To say I’m overwhelmed is a clear understatement.Wish I were there in PP yesterday.

    Hey Bro,

I don’t think Victor Gopal took any pleasure in administering the strokes to you but … you always did visit him and the prefects room a lot.

Being a lawyer suits you and leading the People’s Parliament is your calling. But don’t join the govt. You contribute much more with constructive criticism, regardless of who is in power, ‘cos it IS the people to whom the power should reside.

    trashed,

At the OBA centennial celebrations, Victor Gopal led me by the ear to the table where the ex-HMs’ were seated and declared that I was a lawyer today because he had caned me so many times.

He was right. Much is owed to our teachers and HMs’ then.

    Me join the govt? Nah!

When we have taken our country back from these robbing politicians, I’m going to sell fish in Karak and keep a watchful eye on those who have taken oath to defend, preserve and uphold our constitution.

And if they breach that oath, I’ll be back to kick ass.

    Haris, howdee :)

Great photos! And so colourful too, with so many shades of blue especially. Can’t believe 50k PR people turned up there (and so early) in the morning.

Even though two-dimensional, can feel the carnival-like atmosphere in PP and even sort of see, from the sea of briskly moving PR supporters and top-tier bloggers there, the palpable enthusiasm and people power heat rising from those photos like those squiggly vertical vaporous lines one sees drawn in comic-book cartoons to indicate the heat wafting out of hot, freshly baked tasty pies left out on window-sills to slowly cool down.

Smash UMNO badminton seems fun and those AI masks look very interesting. And what were those FRU-ites doing huddled under that tree in pictures 20, 21 and 22 – being afraid of the sun (the wimps!) or hiding in fear of the Rakyat?

Looks like some people in PR certainly worked their socks off to do a fantastically good job today organising this massive rally so successfully, so a lotta Brownie points to them.

On that profound snippet btw, about sneaking off from class to get drenched in the rain at Merdeka Stadium and being one with MN and all, think I get your drift on that but watching the rain fall from somewhere warm and comfy and dry works well too I think.

Shame about the corporal punishment/caning dished out to you in school by that, if you don’t mind me saying so, unenlightened HM. If that had been me on the receiving end of that cane, I would not have hesitated to sue his bullying pants off for being unfit to be in the role of a role model teacher and for criminal assault and battery, causing ABH to a minor.

One should discipline others when needed, but only reasonably and sensibly without resorting to cheap, nasty or injurious tactics. Coming from any teacher, that sort of behaviour is very naughty and also counter-productive and so is a definite no, no in my books.

    WE SAY YEAH! :)
