You guessed it. That was RPK’s closing statement at the first ceramah we attended at Tanah Liat, Kg Paya.

The crowd of about 800 roared when RPK uttered the words above.

Before that RPK gave the attentive audience a brief account of how all the races contributed in the struggle to attain independence from the Brits.

The crowd, mainly Chinese, many of whom had to brave the drizzle, were plainly appreciative when RPK acknowledged that when the Japanese were still here, whilst the Malays chose to co-operate with them, the Chinese elected to engage them in guerilla warfare, taking refuge in the jungles.

Midway through RPK’s delivery, there was a commotion along the narrow road leading up to the site of the ceramah.

And then people broke out into ‘Reformasi! Reformasi’

Anwar had arrived.

RPK wrapped up his ceramah.

Meanwhile the crowd had now increased to over a thousand.

Anwar was at his charming best.

Of KJ, he brushed him aside as being ‘Siau Ren’ ( Hawkeye educated me that this means ’stupid’).

He touched on the usual matters that he has been raising at his ceramah all over the country. You can catch these on any video hosted on Youtube.

And again, ketuanan rakyat was emphasised.

We left Tanah Liat at about 10pm and headed for Penanti.

The crowd at Penanti numbered around 2,500.

The ADUN for Paroi, Taufik, had the crowd laughing when he described how the Negri Sembilan state government had started a snake farm that cost several million ringgit and a few months later, most of the snakes had escaped leaving the farm near snakeless.

His conclusion : even the snakes cannot stand the BN government!

RPK warned the crowd that BN’s claim that they would win by a majority of 5,000 indicated the extent of cheating that we should expect. That this cheating would be facilitated if voters did not turn up on 26th to vote, leaving the way open for ‘pengundi hantu’ to take the place of the no-show voters.

For this reason, RPK urged those present to go all out to get friends and family to the polling station on Tuesday.

We left the Penanti ceramah a little after 11pm, and headed out to Bt’ Tambun for seafood.

Throughout the night, travelling to the ceramah sites, and then to dinner, could not help noticing a lot of empty chairs in BN cermah sites. Could not stop to take photos for fear of losing sight of the lead car. Will have to speak to Din Merican about providing a local in each car to make traveling a bit more manageable.

Update at 2.52pm on 24/8/2008 : For more photos on the ceramah last night check out Hawkeyejack

    Great informative write up.

  2. Steve F. Says:

Going down to P. Pauh Sunday 7am to help out the campaign! Will bring along my Barisan Rakyat T-shirt.

By the way, “xiao ren” literally means “small man”. It is the direct opposite of “da ren” lit. “big man” or fig. “great person”. The opposite of “great person” is what Anwar meant by “xiao ren”.

  3. Steve F. Says:

Now, this being Penang where Hokkien is the de facto dialect, “siao” means crazy but the “ren” (Mandarin) should be “lang” – so it’s “siao lang” for “crazy people” in Hokkien.

But having heard Anwar used the “da ren” and “xiao ren” comparison before, I believe he meant to say it in Mandarin.

  4. su Says:

Great to know that RPK was speaking. Must have been a bomb!

Keep rockin’ in PP. We’ll be expecting more dirty tricks from the UMNO camp, but expecting a victory for Anwar and the rakyat still the same.

  5. joehancl Says:

For the first time in malaysian polls, all races are sincerely and warmly rooting for a muslim, Anwar, warts and all a real human. Find me a real human in UMno. I spit on these hypocrites and I DAMN them to hell if I can.

  6. tan368 Says:

    Dear Haris,

Glad to know that you and your friends are in Permatang Pauh to give the support to Pakatan Rakyat. Just want to point out that ‘Siau Ren’ in Mandarin refered to KJ by DSAI actually means ‘ a person who is very petty’.

  7. mustafa Says:

In the article, The chinese word “Siaw Ren” means not stupid but “Siaw” means crazy and “Ren” mean people. Just want to correct.

  8. fergie Says:

GOOD LUCK and God be with ALL Anak Anak Bangsa Malaysia in PP. We need a new dawn in Malaysia. Put an end to racism and corruption .. bring back justice for ALL! VOTE for Anwar, VOTE for PKR .. give us HOPE!

The PAS people may not tolerate gambling money.Sue this Nala guy or something!

  10. Bigjoe Says:

I find it amazing RPK can bring in 1000 people just to hear him speak. Aparently Ezam and KJ together only bring in 300 people according to the Star.

    So what about you Haris?

  11. Reniv Says:

TRUE! MORE THAN 20,000 CHINESE WAS MASSACRE IN CHANGI PRISON.My 3rd uncle was drafted into the japanese army and to be send to Thailand /Burma to build the railroad. When the day came he was shaved bald and given green uniform. My grandma, my mom and my auntie were crying their eyes out knowing that those that shipped to build the railroad, they NEVER COME BACK! they are AS GOOD AS DEAD.
After the war was over, 3 years, 8 mths and i don’t remember how many days (Japanese occupation of Malaya)but my mom does.
My uncle was no hero but a compulsive gambler. The owner of Hong Kee Chai Choy who was drafted was willing to pay $500 dollars anyone who would take his place. Thinking like a gambler if he win he can pay him back and not go. ALAS! He lost and about to loose his life too. They were all boarded on a train in K.L.to Thailand, along the way at Ipoh the train slow to stop as the train starts to roll again. That is when my uncle and another guy made their move. They JUMP train and my uncle made his way to Kuala Selangor and hid till the war was over. Finally the truth came out.

YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY?

    THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT!

  12. omar qayyum mohan Says:

  13. firefly Says:

    Haris,

“Siau Ren” means trouble maker or someone that brings harm to you. It is a more well mannered way to name your enemy.

    Take care!

  14. TeohZY Says:

No, ’siao ren’ does not mean ’stupid’. Dunno how to translate it in English, but in Malay, it means something like ‘orang yang hina’.

  15. beycont Says:

‘xiao ren’ as opposed to ‘jun zi’, which means a gentleman, a man with high morals and is honourable. Whereas a ‘xiao ren’ is someone who is without morals, petty, deceitful and without honour.

  16. tempatan Says:

  20. temenggong Says:

It is estimated that 100,000 Chinese died during WW2, mostly civilians slaughtered by the Japanese and the rest by hunger and disease. About 2,000 Chinese died fighting the Japanese and later the British (MPAJA).

An estimated 100,000 Indians too died. First fighting the Japanese as part of the British India army, then fighting the British as the Indian National Army (INA) which was formed in Malaya, also conscripted to build the Burmese Railway (about 45,000 deaths there) and the rest by hunger and disease in the estates where there were no food and medicines.

Some Chinese later carried on their struggle under the MCP against the British and Umno/Alliance as the communist insurgency.

Except for perhaps a few hundred, the malays were not part of any struggle neither against the British or the Japanese. They just cooperated with both.

  21. Keong Says:

  24. Muhammad Firdaus Christopher Says:

Hello there brother Haris and ardent readers,

Firstly, brilliant reporting on the ongoings of last night and lets not get too engrossed into the meanings of Siao Ren or Siau Lang. We should move to the next chapter and put a more systematic emphasis on our coverage for today, tomorrow.

I fully agree with you that we need to have at least a local to be sitted in every car in order to be able to move around without losing touch of the locations we need to meet up next. Please let me know how I, Anand & our friends can assist in this matter.

Anyway, all’s not lost and Anil caught some great snapshots of the BN posts on his website @ anilnetto.com

Apart from the 70 odd UMNO members from Rembau joining PKR last night at Penanti, there are also reports that about 1150 members (consisting UMNO, MCA, Gerakan folks) that jumped as well in Seberang Perai yesterday and with the discussions I’ve had with some of my UMNO friends, the level of morale is extremely low in the camp now. There’s also some last minute surprises that the camp is planning to spring today or tomorrow and I’m trying to get my hands on the details.

    Until later today, Salam Reformasi

    Christopher,

Thanks. We may just take you up on the offer.

  25. nyght Says:

RPK Rocks! DSAI Rocks! Down with Bodowi/Najis/Bolehland Gomen!

  26. wandererAUS Says:

This corrupted BN govt speaks on filthy issues and engaged in repulsive ways to win this by-election, speaks volume of the quality of the Umno led govt and its leaders.
Let us convincingly defeat them in Permatang Puah, put Anwar in Parliament and work for a change…a change for better Malaysia!
“If there is a will, there is a way!”

  27. Muhammad Firdaus Christopher Says:

Oopps, one more thing…. CM Lim Guan Eng and his administration just announced a statewide special holiday has been declared for Penang on 26th August.

    Great job & salute.

    Christopher

  28. malayamuda Says:

I was at a function in Damansara yesterday. Folks from ages 70 to 20 yrs were there and everyone had only one thing to say…………..

we need a breath of fresh air, we want Anwar Ibrahim

  29. yapchongyee Says:

I support Dato Seri Anwar 100% and it is only neccessary to wish Dato Seri the very best of luck. That Dato Seri will take a landslide win is a given; our fear is that BN will stuff the ballot boxes like they did in the election of that Khairy fellow.

The UMNO government has no respect for the law and they do not have any decensy and ethics. Let us all Malaysians pray that Dato Seri can form the government. My hope rides with him. If Dato Seri does not succeed Malaysia too will become a police and failed state.

In the present Malaysia, those politicians who are priviledged to steal from the government just cannot fully appreciate that those criminality is doing irretrieval damage to the country. At the end of the day it is not whether it is Chinese or Malays who do the best to benefit the country, but whether IT IS MALAYSIA WHICH IS DOING THE BEST ! We swim or sink together.

  30. Bolehsia Says:

    Dear Haris,

Good reporting and rooting for more great news from your end.

I’m happy that you and RPK are there to support, my heart and spirit are with you all, felt real bad that I can’t give much as I need to fly off tomorrow for work.

BN SUCKS to the core! Give them HELL!!

Take care and great work guys!( We owe you one. )

  33. Kenny Gan Says:

The dirty tactics employed by BN including personal attacks, fake posters and fake leaflets show how morally bankrupt BN is. PP voters should take note and vote wisely.

  34. amoker Says:

    Temenggung is right.

Thanks Haris for the report. RPK looked like have lost some weight…

    Time to reform government

  35. Johnny Cheah Says:

DSAI, please advise your people to watch out for dirty tricks from UMNO/BN. From day one after the nomination, DSAI have stated that he will not resort to name calling/mud slinging. He have kept to his words whereby UMNO/BN have been engaging in all sorts of name calling/mud slinging. Example is KJ, Nalla and all the UMNO/BN people. Now it is getting out of hand with posters of DSAI and LGE accusing them. The Malaysian public have to wake up from their 51 years of slumber. TIME TO REJECT THE UMNO/BN RACISTS. @$* high time to return DSAI to Parliament *%@

  36. tired Says:

Haris et al., don’t forget to work on the fence sitters, i.e. the older Malay folks who have no access to truthful info like The People’s Parliament. I would think the younger Malays and all the other races are already convinced.

  37. I like chopin Says:

The term xiao ren is used to describe a person who is of devious and dubious character.
Of course the literary meaning is “small person”

    BN dirty work?

  41. Discrimination69, Says:

Hats off to RPK for reminding UMNO, MCA, Gerakan that we Chinese (those babi that were not sent back to China by UMNO) had a big hand in fighting the Japanese and protecting the Malacca Sultanate.

My grand uncle was decapitated by the Japanese and his head was paraded on a bamboo pole at the Malacca clock tower in front of the Stadhuys as an anti Japanese spy.

What would Malacca be if not for Hang Tuah and friends (who are Chinese bouncers sent by the Chinese Emperor to protect Sultan Mahmud?

UMNO has rewritten the history books and MCA and Gerakan has kept very silent to support Ketuanan Melayu.

Go to Bukit China, Bukit Gedung, Bukit Beruang and Jelutong in Malacca and you can see the history of Chinese contribution to this country.

Rest assured my future generations’and relatives’ votes are with PKR all the way. Bravo RPK and all bloggers for the insightful PP buy-election reporting and education on history!
