Independence?
No independent judiciary!
No independent AG!
No independent police force!
Freedom?
Tell that to those in Kamunting. The numbers are reportedly growing.
Free to disseminate and receive information?
Is that why Malaysia Today is dead?
Free press?
Is that why the MSM went overboard playing up Saiful’s swearing almost every other day from 15th August but killed the story about Imam Ramlang Porigi’s revelation on 24th August?
What Merdeka?
Are we free?
Couldn’t even peacefully gather to hold a candle in solidarity with RPK in Dataran Merdeka!
Free?
From corruption?
Oppression?
Racist bigots?
Celebrate Merdeka?
Why?
This 31st, I will stay home and moarn the passing of Malaysia Today.
Still say this is not a nation in distress?

It is very difficult to feel the Merdeka spirit when you see the rule of law and individual liberties are constantly eroded. Our leaders, practicing racial politics do not have the know how or vision to lead the country. Shouldn’t we be choosing to live in an unenlightened world and to support ideas which can bring greater peace, happiness and prosperity to all the Rakyat. We have the natural resources and wealth to implement free educations (as in Australia) and better health care for all but instead the rakyat have to send their children to private college or oversea while the poor have to give-up their pursuit for higher education to make-do. In Malaysia it’s who you know and not what you know that are running the country. Time for change….

It is really sad that some did not realise that the opposition had to depend on one individual to form a government.
A good government does not need just need one personality to be formed. Realistic and proven policies matters.
Has anybody ever questioned how exactly the Sept 16 to be materialised?
Just believed what Anwar says?
And the scariest thing about depending on one individual is dictatorship!
Since when we can believe him and him, walk the talk?

It’s sad and bad.
While the price of daily needs are increasing and together with it the pressure of living, the present government is trying their best to ‘bury’ a man and in the process seems to have forgotten about the ordinary men and women that are called RAKYAT.
Right now, our PM is delivering his budget and I can’t even bother to turn on my tv.
First thing I did after reaching home was to get online and check out sites that tell ‘truer’ news.
Screw the UMNO-BN govt.
Screw the MSM.

This for those who are wondering how to access Malaysia Today.
I still have access from overseas, so this is what it says:
Haris,
When I read that article about the ISA, my heart broke. Literally. I still remember when you asked us this question: “Until these men and more than 70 others are freed from Kamunting, can we in all good conscience find a reason to celebrate Merdeka this 31st August?”
How are the 70+ people in Kamunting going to feel about Merdeka? How are their families, which could number up to about 300+ people, going to feel? How are their friends going to feel? That’s more than 1000+ people.
How about the police who keep watch at Kamunting? Can they celebrate Merdeka, while seeing these people having their freedom in cuffs?
How about the thousands who live under the poverty standard? How are they going to feel when they watch money being squandered for a colourful parade along Dataran Merdeka that has almost no purpose except to cushion the government’s pride?
It is heartwrenching just to think about it.
And the worst part is, they just don’t care.

You are absolutely spot on! Even the ‘old fox’ could also feels it. He said that the people are not happy and this Merdeka will be joyless. For this statement, I salute him as in many ways, he tends to look at his side of the coin that pleases him.
For this year’s Merdeka, I fly no flag whether in home or office and will wear YELLOW to honour our King which is our last bastion. Hopefully, with much prayers, divine intervention will take place as God forbids those who hatched evil plans.
Indeed we are facing much hardship with each passing day and what is the peace that the bn govt is talking about and offer to us when we have no freedom at all? We may think we have freedom of speech but what we share can also be used against us if the authority deems that we have cross the line. This is no rule of law but selected rule by law.
Have faith to believe that things will change for good. With more people like you standing their ground in knowing what is true and righteous, certainly justice will prevail and the day of reckoning for those who plot evil is near.

Dear Haris,
I share your frustrations on the present state of this great nation with its “Despotic & Autocratic” BN & UMNO Political Leaders.
They are constantly “Shifting” the goalpost to cover their arse, just like the Multi media Act, the DNA Bill, the 2008 Budget, etc !
Most Bloggers & citizens relying on the alternative media are upset – rightly so as they subscribe to the TMnet Internet provider.
Just guess who is the “Guilty” party in “Desperation” instructing his “Running Dogs” to carry out ALL the childish “Charade”.
The rayaat have not forgotten the last episode when the Internet speed was slowed down, etc until the “Bursa” had to be shutdown causing “Millions” to be lost in the stock trading during that period.
Bet you they were working on this tactic which should have been in place the last few days before the 26th August 2008 bye-elections…but the “Goons” failed miserably….
YM RPK sure beat them to it with his “MT Revelations” to inform ALL, in time for the 26th August 2008 P44 bye-election “Tsunami”.
So they are now consoling themselves by “Bolting the doors…after the horses have bolted out !” – call that “Smart” ?
Your questions & terminology describing them are very apt indeed.
This 31/08/2008 Merdeka will be another sad “Monologue Celebration” like last year sadly using our Taxpayers $$$, unlike the 1957 Merdeka “Jubilation” celebration.
Just go back to those images & photos……
With the Powers-that-be still in “Denial” & continuing their “Arrogance” inspite of the P44 bye-election “Tsunami”…..well, they will have to learn it the “Hard” way.
“Devine Intervention” works “Wonders”, so we just give them more rope to “Hang” themselves at every turn towards their Auto-Pilot “Self_Destruct” mode path “Destination” soon.
Have no fear as more “Incriminating revelations” will be forthcoming, to put the “Final” nail into the coffin of the BN administration by its “Enemies” from within their own ranks….Insha’Allah.

The former PM slammed the government for blocking Malaysia Today, reported the Star. And During the budget tabling today, our great PM took his opportunity to warn anyone of attempting to take over the federal government, obviously referring to Anwar.
His budget today is nothing but sweetener in his desperate attempt to win us Malaysians. It seems he has failed to read the message the Permatang Pauh voters have sent on behalf of us.
There was a time I had favoured this PM than Anwar but each of his present acts has proven me wrong only to give me a tight slap on my face. And the hatred I have for Abdullah surmounts beyond I could imagine and I’m certainly under duress.

Merdeka? We lost our ‘merdeka’ years ago when UMNO screwed every system we had in place and the soul of the nation was sold to the highest bidder. Now UMNO has to contend with one of their own on the opposite side – and he knows every trick in the book.
At the budget tabling in the Dewan today Pak Lah would look to his left at the Speaker and to his right but never up across to where you-know-who was sitting. The TV cameras would pan the dewan but always stop short of showing AI. So you know who has the psychological edge and who is running scared, the unspoken word speaks louder than a thousand banned web-sites.

What is “Merdeka” anyway! when the rakyat is still suffering from huge living cost and race is divided with “ketuanan melayu”. UMNO has created this hatred among the main races in Malaysia and it will take years to rebuild it unless Pakatan & DSAi governs the country. This year’s Merdeka as i concur with Tun Dr. Mahathir who said that there is no hype at all for celebration. Who is the minister in charge to organize this 51st celebration? Is he organising or trying to make money. I wonder whether the Pakatan govern states will be invited or it is only for BN?

Why celebrate 31st August as a NATIONAL Merdeka Day when it is an anachronistic historical date totally irrelevant to East Malaysians?
By all means, we must be allowed to do so if it is confined to the Peninsular but if we are to seriously consider national reconciliation as one of the bedrocks of unity, then please consider the 45th anniversary of Malaysia Day on 16th September as significantly more important.
While I understand and respect Haris’s explanation, and his decision to continue displaying the Jalur Gemilang as such, I will however celebrate the ‘merdeka’ within me and use it to unshackle closed mindsets, help the oppressed and persist on initiatives to create a truly great nation which we all call home.
Why? Because I am free to do so. And because it’s my flag too, a symbolic sovereign identity which stands just as proudly among other national flags of this world, I will continue to uphold its dignity. Indeed, we, the people, are the masters of the land, not the politicians.
P.S. For those who still love the Brits, I got news for you folks. They ain’t coming back to rescue you.

August 30, 2008
I have not celebrated Merdeka for a long time now.
I stopped hesitantly when I first saw Malaysia forced to change direction, take a racist course and head downhill.
And resolutely from 1988 onwards when I saw the Rule of Law finally DIE in Malaysia.
Malaysia’s Rule of Law was deliberately killed off by dishonourable men who disrespected the nation’s founding vision and who manipulated the democratic system and betrayed the Malaysian People by abusing the delegated governing power granted to them in trust to empower them to govern Malaysia within the remit of a parliamentary democracy system.
And Malaysia was let down by those of her learned citizens who saw what was happening, and who understood the real implications of the manipulative and destructive moves to dismantle her separation of powers, but who stayed quiet, and stood by, and watched the shameful destruction of a democratic nation state and which subsequently led to various incidents of bullying harassment, injustice from numerous miscarriages of justice from corruption and a lack of due process and worst of all, the unforgivable and politically motivated character assassinations, shamings and beatings meted out – cheaply, coldly and calculatively – to many of the nation’s good and innocent people.
So I will NOT celebrate Merdeka this Sunday 31 August 2008.
For me, the concrete facades of the tallest buildings in the world or the showy facades of (short-term) economic success do not in any way make up for the despicable acts that took place and shockingly, still take place, against the people as a result of that initial fall from the nation’s founding vision and democratic ideal and principles from the early 1970s.
And until Malaysia’s DEAD Rule of Law is resurrected, her judicial powers reinstated and her citizens free from oppressive and undemocratic policies and bad man-made “laws” such as the vile ISA 1966, I will NOT falsely celebrate an “external” show of a pseudo-Merdeka-ness.
Until material reality aligns itself with Malaysia’s founding vision and her democratic ideal, I will fly that material Malaysian flag upside down in distress, and the real Malaysian flag in my mind upright in truthful pride.
So….over to you Mr Prime Minister: Are you going to fix the real problems or are you going to gloss over them and call those who see the problems as “uncouth and despicable”?

Malaysia is in the ICU struggling for breath and life and every minute, BN is injecting lethal doses of death to it.
But Malaysia will survive. Malaysia will overcome.
Malaysia will triumph over her enemies.
Why?
Because we are a people who will not stay down any more. We are a people awakening from slumber. we may have lost a battle but we are NOT going to lose the war.
BN does not want us to, but we shall prevail. We shall overcome. And with God’s help, this nation shall be turned around.
The change we want must be a RETURN to the very foundations of this country and to the raising up of the Constitution to its rightful, respectable place as the supreme law of this nation.

You are always right on these issues and no mood this non-Merdeka of spirits & souls.
The BN Government is afraid more cans of worms will be spilled by RPK so they banned his blogsite and because of this Present Moronic Government is corrupted and dirty therefore on the pretext of helping the Rakyats, they could swindle and plunder more money from the Budget Deficit 2009 and from which with most of the deficit Money coming from Petronas. Beware that the Money allocated is for their own BN Prime Minister’s and Cronies’ pockets expenditure and not for helping the Rakyats. Look for example at the Crystal Mosque’s and Mariner Club’s Fiasco in Terengganu’s Billions in Wang Ehsan, Billions had been lost as white elephants. Also Johore’s Scenic Bridge, Penang’s Second Bridge & LRT Projects are canceled at their whims and fancies at the last minutes and this very scenarios could happen again despite being the promised Projects in the Budget 2009 as anything could happen last minutes with the Flip Flop, Incompetent and Sleeping PeeM in Power.
The same could happen to all the empty promises of aid and help to the Rakyats these could all be lip service only unless it is monitored by reputable NGOs. On the irreversible Food Prices inflation, the unnecessary Moronic previous price hike on Petrol & Diesel had caused great permanent damage to the Food Price Structure and even if the price cut to Petrol and Diesel revert to their original prices prior to their hike, it will not revert the Food prices back to their original state and only the PeeM is to be solely blamed for his unwarranted Fuel Price Hike. His 2009 budget did not help the Rakyats’ quelled their immediate hardship suffered nor did that help them solve their Transport Problems immediately with multiple schemes but none available immediately with all the empty rhoterics but nothing concrete that could solve their immediate problems after years of neglect from this incompetent sleeping PeeM. Come Sept 16, 2008 send him home to sleep forever he is no longer needed.

Guess you are right again.Until we can get the goverment we wanted, there is not much reason to celebrate Merdeka Day.We are still not free in the true sense. So,for me and my family,it will be just another normal Sunday.

Greetings Admiral
Peace be with you too.
I just came back from dinner and on my way home I observe only one car with a Malaysian Flag being display even though the jam is pretty bad…as usual.
I started counting flags that are being display on shop lots and came to the conclusion that about 30% of shops display the national flag. This is happening around my area and I don’t know about other areas in KL. So there you are…
Harris, you are right, the nation is indeed in distress..sigh.

My “Merdekah day’s celebration mood” still at utmost all time .
This mood will not distracted by any obstacles created by the “Umno-BN the racist, the loser, the greedy bigots” so far.
Moreover these bigots presently sitting in a “half-sinking ship” so their present no longer important to me any further.
As for me !
Celebrating my beloved motherland’s birthday is consider an important and dutiful and respectful affair .
As long as we,anak-anak bangsa Malaysia has the firm and strong “WILL” readiness to overcome any “evil obstacles” which constructed by the “evil Umno-BN the racist, the loser, the greedy bigots” from now and then.
Sure, we can do it !
Since ,we have overcame a few of them in the past. I have full confidence to overcome more !
I know a lot more to come. With our strong WILL, for sure we can have more colorfull victories to come in near future !
That’s why I still insist to celebrate this National day on the 31st Aug with full mood.
I will celebrate hers’ auspicious day with heartiest mood with my family , friends and anak-anak bangsa Malaysia.

Dear Haris,
I am just as disappointed as you are in terms of the situation our country has been in for the past 51 years or so. As you have rightfully pointed out, Malaysians have never really known what it feels like to be truly independent. However, this is the first time in many years that I sense a little hope in the distance ahead. There is a growing hope among Malaysians that the end is nearing for the dictatorship of UMNO & BN. We can only hope and pray that Anwar will make good on his word and take the reigns come 916. Perhaps from then, all Malaysians may celebrate our national day on Sept 16th instead! By the way Haris, you have yet to give us your thoughts on the 916 takeover. Do you really think this can happen…?

Dear Haris,
After my dinner outing with my daughter & my grandchildren at the Lake Club last night, I decided to go for a “Lone” cruise around Selangor Club & managed to find a parking spot at about 11.30pm.
Got out of my car a went for a stroll at the Selangor Club padang & around the vicinity up to Batu road/jalan Parliament junction.
Yes, there was the usual stage shows, with Mahathir Lokman as the MC as usual.
At about 1145pm the PM arrived with Shafie Apdal & the cabinet Ministers of the PM’s team (Mahyuddin, Rais, etc with their spouses).
Then they had our “Space” Datuk, our “Antartic” Datin Sh Mazlina, Dato’ Misbun, Silver medallist Dato’ Lee, etc. on stage, followed by PM & his entourage joining them on stage to witness the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang with the call of Merdeka x7 at midnite & with the singing of National anthem & all the National songs.
Then there was about 15 minutes of fireworks which ended at about 12.30 am when the crowds were asked to leave the padang so that the DBKL could cleanup the place for the 31st morning ceremony.
Guess what, about 80% of the crowd consisted of the Indonesians, Bangledeshiss, Myanmars & Indian foreign workers, kampong folks, Mat Rempits, Mina Rempits, some foreign tourists & students.
Ofcourse DPM & his team were at KLCC, & the MCA Leader at B.Bintang for the event.
Many of the KLites have already gone outstation for the long holidays, so with all the blocked roads, traffic jam, etc tomorrow, it will be about the same crowd again.
I can just imagine the millions spent on the very “Elaborate” VVIP & VIP Tents, the stage & hundreds of VIP chairs, the public stand erected in front of Selangor Club padang, KLCC & B. Bintang location, the decorations, lightings, etc.
There was alot photographing, singing & enjoyment by most of the foreign worker’s crowd, the Mat Rempits & Mina Rempits in celebrating the “long Holiday”.
Nothing much to shout about for you & I, so it would be better to just sit back at home, relax with the family & watch it on TV.
Regarding your call for ‘Proactive” actions to reaffirm our “Anak Bangsa Malaysia” call.- it is a well written article & I salute you for that fine effort.
Here is an interesting article which I would like to share with you & your readers.:
I have highlighted the words & phrases with “…………”.
A German’s point of view on “Fanatics” which I would like “to equate to BN, UMNO, Ketetuanan & Religiuos Fanatics vs the “Silent Majority” Anak Bangsa Malaysia”.
Quote:
“A man whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide “our attitude toward fanaticism”.
‘Very few people were true Nazis’ he said, but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, “the majority just sat back and let it all happen”. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.’
We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish “the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe” in the name of Islam. The fact is that “the fanatics rule Islam” at this moment in history.
It is the “fanatics” who march. It is the “fanatics” who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the “fanatics” who systematically slaughter Christian, Jewish and tribal groups throughout the Middle East,Asia and Africa, gradually taking over an entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the “fanatics” who bomb, behead, murder, or ‘honour kill’. It is the “fanatics” who take over mosque after mosque. It is the “fanatics” who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. The hard quantifiable fact is that the ‘peaceful majority’, the ‘silent majority’, is cowed and extraneous.
Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.
The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet. And, who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were ‘peace loving’?
History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: “Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence”.
Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the “fanatics own them”, and the end of their world will have begun.
Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghanis, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died “because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late”.
As for us who watch it all unfold; we must pay attention to the only group that counts; “the fanatics who threaten our way of life”.
Lastly, at the risk of offending, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand. So, “extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world wide, read this – think about it – and send it on.” unquote.
