‘…The Ketuanan Melayu model has failed… The founders envisaged a government for all Malaysians… The creation of Bangsa Malaysia is the challenge of establishing a united Malaysian nation with a sense of a common and shared destiny.
This must be a nation at peace with itself, territorially and ethnically integrated, living in harmony and full and fair partnership, made up of one Bangsa Malaysia with political loyalty to the nation…How do we bring unity to the people if we are not prepared to respect their dignity? …The obsession with the Ketuanan Melayu dotrine has in fact destroyed something precious in us. It makes us lose our sense of balance and fairness…my parting message is this: The people of goodwill must continue to strive to bring about change, so that we can rebuild the trust of all Malaysians. From that trust, we can rebuild the country where we do not live in fear, but in freedom; that the rights of all Malaysians are acknowledged, respected and protected by the system of law that is just and fair. There is no quest more honourable and a struggle more worthy of sacrifice’ - excerpts from Zaid Ibrahim’s speech at the LawAsia 2008 conference yesterday.
These excerpts do not do justice to his speech, which deserves full reading. The full text, in pdf, is linked below.
On 26th April, last year, I said this of Zaid Ibrahim in a post entitled ‘Zaid vs Nazri – The debate and my thoughts’ :
‘I think you have tried to bring about change in UMNO and BN so that it might begin to dismantle its race-based politics. I think you have tried to restore some semblance of constitutional order to this country. You have failed, not for want of trying, but because the politics of patronage so entrenched in BN cannot be broken simply because of the vested interests of its leadership…if you stood in my constituency in the next election as an independent candidate, you would get my vote. I think you have done enough to rightfully be addressed ‘Yang Berkhidmat” ‘.
Six months later, in another post entitled ‘YB Zaid, you don’t belong in UMNO’, I urged Zaid to :
‘…get out of UMNO, stand as an independent candidate in any constituency in the Klang valley of your choosing in the forthcoming general elections, and this blog will throw its support behind you’
Zaid did not contest in the 12th General Elections. He was dropped from UMNO’s list of candidates.
In April, this year, Pak Lah appointed Zaid senator as well as minister to lead in reforms to, amongst others, the judiciary.
I thought Zaid tried his best, but ran into a huge obstacle.
UMNO.
In September, Zaid resigned from his ministerial position, in protest of the government’s use of the ISA.
Yesterday, during the LawAsia conference, he also clarified that he had resigned his senator’s position.
I just sent the following sms to Zaid :
’2 down, 1 to go. U quit as minister & senator. Now dump UMNO and lead anak Bangsa Malaysia’

Yes, even before he was appointed a Minister I had expressed by views that he would be one person who has the credentials to leade UMNO and BN, and provided he was given the way to lead, he would be the most obvious choice.
Well, Zaid, a man who stood by his principles, has displayed an exemplary quality and example as a person who is most suitable person to lead the country in these difficult times.
I was against DSAI when he was in the govt but the moment he was arrested and treated in a very despicable way, I threw my support for him and through the years, I have argued for him with many, in person and through blogs steadfastly but that ends with this PKNS fiasco. From this moment onwards, my group and I will cease support for Pakatan Rakyat and it will know the effect of this in the next election. How political power can change most people is visible from this incident, except for one person, Zaid Ibrahim.
And if Pakatan thinks that this is just talk, let one of them resign in the Klang Valley and if Zaid takes up the offer to stand as an Independent,as Haris says, we will show what it means. Shame on all you PR elected representative. Quite frankly, I have lost interest in your attempt to form the govt, as there is already an indication which way it would go.

All means of reform from within is not possible.

Zaid has the right credentials to represent what a true Malaysian leader should be. Intellectually matured, confident, a man of character, a champion for fairness and justice and one who can see through the color of one’s skin. Such men are few. Yet, there is hope that those who holds the same principles come out and be counted. The time has come for us all to make a difference. And as quoted….the sacrifice will be worth its weight in gold.

Zaid has to take a close look at the kind of people he is associating with. He is members alongside a whole lot of them in UMNO so long as he remains an UMNO member.
These people, so far as it would seem, have unanimously nominated to have a dubious character lead them as President. It would seem like by their reckoning Najib comes with all the right credentials to lead them.
If that says something of the content of their characters, the question for Zaid is why it is by continuing to associate with this bunch he lends them his credentials and credibility? I thought, growing up, we were all told to keep well away and not associate with gangsters and such.

Guys like RPK, Zaid and Haris (all Malays) have earned our respect and I, for one, would not even think twice to give my votes to any of them. DSAI’s Ketuanan Rakyat, as against UMNO’s Ketuanan Melayu, measured to a large extent in attracting the votes of Malaysians who believe that our destiny lies in believing and doing as MALAYSIANS. However, I have my reservations now on DSAI and PR.

The quest for a just & equitable society where the people ‘are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character’, is going to be a long and arduous journey. But like Martin Luther Ling, we too have a dream – that one day we will see the creation of a true Bangsa Malaysia.

Dear all,
I would suggest that we should give PR a chance as it is mostly made of ex BNs so lets see whether they actually mean what they say in their speeches and sermons to us. Men like Zaid are the leaders Malaysia needs to take it to the platue of a modern and developed nation but sadly like Dato Onn b Jaafar, his own people don’t like him. But it is leaders like him that we must continously give our support for there to be any concerted change to take place in Malaysia.

Mariadass Anthony and Dev:
Most of us voted for PR and DSAI because we believed that they would not behave like UMNO and BN. What is happening now is that PAS is holding to ransom the effective functioning of the PR governments. Did it not, just immediately after the elections, went its devious ways to co-habit with UMNO, all in the name of Ketuanan Melayu. It is those like Husam Musa and Tok Guru who had given the confidence for a better future, and I salute them, but those aligned with the Ketuanan Melayu are quite overwhelming.
Then there is this guy Zulkifli Nordin who wants the votes of Non-Malays but despises them through his religious rhetorics and, to this day, PKR had not done much about his rhetorics. If he is honest enough, he should resign and stand for a by-election, and then should see how far his rhetorics will carry him. Amusing isn’t it, in one breath he says he will do anything for Islam but the only thing he won’t do is to resign and re-test his popularity.
Am I to infer that, much like how the component parties of BN (MIC, MIC, Gerakan, etc) chanting the mantra of consensus politics but let UMNO reign supreme with divisive and supremacist policies, that now PR happens to have got that rubbed on it also?
You may recall that, riding on PKR and DSAI, PAS had made great inroads during the 1999 elections, even capturing Trengganu and almost capturing Kedah but soon after that became very cocky and started displaying its deceit. For that PKR and DAP paid a very heavy price in the 2004 elections, although there was the Pak Lah’s image factor at that time. The same can be said of PAS when it won on the backdrop of Semangat 46.
All in all, there cannot be and should not be a repeat of the past divisive politics. If PKR and DAP need our support, then PAS needs to be told firmly that it has to abide by pre-election promises, instead of shooting off through unwarranted statements on Ketuanan Melayu and the like. Otherwise, it will be better to part ways and build up gradually a country where most Malaysians can live and respect each other as citizens of this country.
Mind you, we all respect and have accepted the special position of the Malays as spelt out in the Constitution. It is no more an issue.
It may sound somewhat over-stretched but if DSAI does not realise the what is PAS doing to the PR coalition, he will face the wrath of the voters during the next election and for a person who had supported him for so long, I hope he realises this sooner than later. Oh no, this would not mean the votes will go to BN, we will just dump into the dustbin to show our displeasure.

Haris, I agreed with you that Zaid should leave UMNO. Instead of wasting time in hoping to bring reform to the good-for-nothing party, he should leave asap & consider to join PR. Dear Haris
I totally agree with yellowwoman that you should be crowned Bapa Anak-anak Bangsa Malaysia. Like many others, I am beginning to get disillusioned with Anwar Ibrahim. It is as if he has not heard our misgivings about Pakatan Rakyat and especially about Zulkifli Nordin. But I am re-charged with hope in the form of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim. Again, I agree with Yellowwoman that ‘Zaid is a man of great intelligence, fairness, audacity to effect change, and one with utmost courage to speak his mind’; an Obama for Malaysia. We have to be realistic that we need more moderate and liberal Malays to stand up and be counted as the majority population of this country constitutes Malays. First, we have you, Haris and RPK, then we have Tunku Aziz, and now Zaid Ibrahim. I hope I can still include Anwar Ibrahim as a leader of Anak Bangsa Malaysia; can we hope to have people like Musa Hitam, Sharir Samad? Of course among the non-Malays, we have many and especially the younger generation such as Lim Guan Eng, Jeff Ooi, Tony Pua, Hannah Yeoh, M Kulasegaran, Sivarasa, etc, etc…. Are there any towering Anak Bangsa Malaysia leaders amongst my own Sarawakians and Sabahans? Come on people, we need all towering Malaysians to stand forth and be counted to lead us anak-anak Bangsa Malaysia into the future….

It is the Zaid Ibrahim that formed the Muslim Lawyers Association during Mahathir’s era ? I have been made to understand that during that period his law firm became one of the biggest in the country. Very unique !!! He must be damn good then.
I have also been made to understand, KJ (Kera Jantan) called him personally on the appointment as Minister while he was playing golf in Bangkok. What a connection !!!
It has been made known to me that he was a product of the ITM. I thought he was from Oxford or Cambridge.
Damn lucky fella. Get best of both worlds.
