Check mate, CJ?
November 18, 2008
Some years back, the newly minted CJ, then still a practising lawyer, thought of a plan to avoid wife No.1 finding out about wife no.2.
He destroyed the marriage certificate evidencing the marriage to wifey 2 so that wifey 1 could not discover what was no more.
How does that saying go, about hoodwinking some of the people, some of the time, but not all the people, all of the time?

“It took me six months to be nice, to bribe each and every individual to get back into their good books before our files were being unattended to” – Zaki, quoted in the New Straits Times on 8th November, 2008. Charles Hector has the full excerpt of what the spanking new CJ was alleged to have said and as reported in the NST HERE
“Your reporter must have interpreted what I said, which is that during that period there was corruption in order to get things done at the court registry, as I myself having done it. I have never in my life bribed or received any bribe” – Zaki quoted in a clarification that appeared in the New Straits Times the very next day, and reproduced on 12th November, 2008 by Malaysiakini, which also reported two failed attempts by Yang Berkhidmat Karpal Singh to table an emergency motion in Parliament to debate the matter of the new CJ “committing a serious offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1981″.
Undaunted, on 13th November, 2008, the Lion of Jelutong lodged a police report that Zaki had admitted to corrupt practices in 1987 while in private practice as a lawyer.
Today Karpal came out with guns blazing.
Malaysianinsider reports that Karpal has called on Zaki to resign from the post of CJ within one week for lying about graft, failing which Karpal will make public an audio recording of Zaki admitting to bribing court officials and has intimated that he will table a motion in Parliament against Zaki for having misled the country with his “so-called clarification” unless the Chief Justice resigns.
“We cannot have a Chief Justice who lies, simple as that. We must start with integrity. There is no point having independence without integrity”, Karpal is quoted as saying.
YB Karpal, 25,700 anak-anak Bangsa Malaysia will walk with you on this.

November 18, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Karpal is a force of nature.
If there was a free judiciary in our Malaysia he would have sent BN packing all by himself!
November 18, 2008 at 7:45 pm
He tries to lie to his wife about his second marriage by burning the marriage certificate.
He admits offering bribes as a lawyer.
And he creates history by being the first lawyer to be appointed directly as a high court judge.
After 14 months, he becomes CJ.
The above is the tale of Tan Sri Zaki Azmi, our very own Malaysian Legend.
Argus Eye,
Correction. Appointed directly to the Federal Court
November 18, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Seconded!
November 18, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I will walk with you, YB Karpal.
I am proud to say that I was one of the 25,700.

November 18, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Haris,
Petition currently = 26,975
Btw, i did not sign
November 18, 2008 at 8:46 pm
One of the highest moments for me since Zaki was made CJ. Reminds of a phrase i last used in school:”sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, jatuh ke tanah juga akhirnya.” I hope i get the last laugh on this onela Haris.
cheers
November 18, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Pak Haris,
I hoped that the petition that I’ve signed does not go in vain.
In this case, does this mean that DYMN Agong has been mislead by the PM on the CJ’s appointment?
November 18, 2008 at 9:53 pm
right on YB Karpal, shoot them down!
i’m #277 on the petition.
keep the fire burning, bro Haris.
November 18, 2008 at 9:57 pm
So what’s the big deal? Even the photograph of vacationing CJ did nothing to the people who supposed to guard the sanctity of the judiciary. These all were small issues happened many many years ago. The ruler conference obviously would have considered all these before deciding the right person to head the judiciary and after all one of the ruler himself was a head of the judiciary.
Sometimes this opposition and bloggers got nothing better to do.
wink..wink..
November 18, 2008 at 10:58 pm
The God will destroy this Liar CJ very soon!
November 18, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Haris,
Regarding the saying that you can fool some of the people some of the time but you won’t be able to fool all of the people all of the time…
Here is a creative and hilarious attempt at refashioning that old chestnut by none other than Dubya himself!

November 18, 2008 at 11:08 pm
gross and blinking injustice.
i think he is going to lie about the law in his future judgments.
i dont think he will be resigning from the bench since he sold off his stakes in umno and companies blah blah blah
lets see whats coming up similiar to something like metramac in the future
November 18, 2008 at 11:14 pm
I’d give Zaki Azmi a chance (say, a 3-month probation) if only he didn’t look so totally… umm… Umno! Strange how all these Umno big guns all seem to acquire a certain Dick Cheneyish smugness as soon as they get appointed to high office…. It has become glaringly obvious that we can no longer tolerate Umno’s patented brand of criminal misrule in all departments of government.
November 18, 2008 at 11:26 pm
That’s the way Karpal – go get him!
Get that morally unzippered loose cannon!!!
He must be flying so high, that he forgot that he’s the CJ now!!
Forget about integrity – God help Malaysia if we have an idiot who can’t even tell a good lie, as the CJ!!
November 18, 2008 at 11:35 pm
So what is the big deal, have you forgotten about the korek! korek! Korek lawyer and the then CJ who went on vacation in New Zeland. Big Deal a Royal Commission was appointed, so what is the outcome? Look Karpal, C J Zaki only told a little lie about taking care of court staff to expedite matters mah. As lawyer, if you appear before him, and if he is going to act like New Zeland holidaying CJ, bungkus la you.
November 18, 2008 at 11:51 pm
correct…correct…correct…..bygone issue.
November 19, 2008 at 12:11 am
Somewhere in the deep recesses of his subconscious mind, the truth somehow traveled all the way to his tongue…
He should swear in the mosque and say, “I have never in my life bribed or received any bribe.”
November 19, 2008 at 12:41 am
Well Done!…Haris Ibrahim our chegu!!…keep up the pressure!

November 19, 2008 at 12:54 am
Haris, checkmate is not enough. Remove from the chessboard. Start a new game. That’s what we need.
November 19, 2008 at 2:18 am
So how does this reflect on the King and sultans whom consented on his appointment?
Its a shame that they are bestowed the power but unable to put it to proper use.
SHAME ON THE KING AND SULTANS.
November 19, 2008 at 3:54 am
Wife number 1 AND wifey number 2?
Sorry, I’m a little confused.
If true, that’s *bigamy, isn’t it? A crime which in some countries is punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment.
*Bigamy is defined as a criminal offence i.e the act of going through a marriage ceremony with someone when one is already lawfully married to someone else.
“Imagine Power To The People” John Lennon.
November 19, 2008 at 6:51 am
After admitting to have given a bribe he has the cheek to say i have never given or taken a bribe in my life-LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE.
November 19, 2008 at 7:01 am
The only thing going up is evil, greed and corruption by the stinkiest stink BN shit while the rest of the country goes down, down the drain. Dear God please free us from these devil incarnates asap
November 19, 2008 at 9:14 am
This shows the mentality of our ministers, idiots & liars. They keep on spewing nonsense & lies and retracting them back just by claiming misrepresentation. I think the quote of the year is “Oh i am misrepresented by yr journalists” What a joke.
November 19, 2008 at 9:31 am
I wonder what the Agong has to say on this. But I think I will be kept wondering for a long, long time before we get word from the Palace on this one, yeah?
ROBBER STAMP and that’s no spelling error!
November 19, 2008 at 9:35 am
At the pace he was promoted, we all know something is already fishy. Why not, connected to UMNO mah. He’s there foe a purpose, just ask them.
November 19, 2008 at 9:58 am
Never in my life do i sense this sinking feeling of our country going to the dogs more apparent than ever..*sigh*
November 19, 2008 at 10:01 am
thats the best CJ malaysia could have got from the whole lot of the judges and it turns out to be pure shit. oh oh my god save the country, its not to late.when karpal takes on someone as history has proven he has got the ammunition, asking him to resigh is the first salvo and i`bet you that there is more to come.CJ has superseeded all the rest of the judges.what could be the feeling of the righfull jugde to the cj
November 19, 2008 at 10:22 am
HARIS,
Is it time for us to appeal to the KING,
give the Royalties a chance to redeem themselves,
restore respect of the Rakyat !?
November 19, 2008 at 10:25 am
Yes, I did not even pause for a moment to sign the petition. Salute to Karpal and to you also Haris, that the meaning and torch of integrity lights up the dark sky. What a pity – the chair that was graced by greats like Tun Suffian has been tainted by the likes of Fairuz and Azmi.
November 19, 2008 at 10:33 am
I have always been cynical about the way the government pushes through appointments, projects etc. At the end of the day, someone would benefit from it, not the rakyat, but some individuals in the ruling party.
Despite 25700 signatures handed over to the rulers, Zaki was appointed CJ. YB Karpal has challenged Zaki’s statements and called him a liar. Will Zaki resign. I don’t think so. Will the government force him to resign. I don’t think so either. If he had been a man of integrity, he wouldn’t have accepted the position in the first instant.
Can a consorted effort by PP and more petitions, be recognized and action taken to remove Zaki as CJ. Again, I am in doubt.
Only a change of government can bring about some integrity to the judiciary.
November 19, 2008 at 10:35 am
Let us get real before prematurely ejaculating over this possibility of a checkmate!
This is Malaysia.
He is UMNO!
Basically you can do and say what you want. If he wants to stay on, he just sticks his middle finger at you.
And that is what he is doing now!
And he has got a smirk on his face as well.
As long as UMNO rules, there is shit all that anyone, Karpal or otherwise, can do!
November 19, 2008 at 10:50 am
This zaki fella does not understand what it entails to be a C J.
He was obviously picked from the DUSTBIN !
Is this clear to our beloved RULERS now ?
Our very dear and respected KING,please HELP!
DAULAT TUANKU !DAULAT TUANKU ! DAULAT TUANKU !!!
November 19, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Don’t even have respect for women then how to be good Chief Justicelah. (Refering to wife/wives and destroying evidence). Nobody better in this country?:(
November 19, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Boot Camp would indeed be a more appropriate venue rather than the seat of the CJ in the Palace of Justice. More words are redundant. Case closed. Appeal dismissed.
November 19, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Don’t you know? Our ruler and Ruling coalition sleeps together. Already so clear cut when our ruler also agree to that what you call? Yea, the UMNO version of “Social contract” nonsense. No case for Altantuyah, appointment of tainted Chief judge and approval by the Yang Pertuan Agong. I already give up hope for any change in my country. Sad indeed. Please remember the rakyat is not stupid.
November 19, 2008 at 1:48 pm
YB Karpal why the wait? Just reveal it and together we all force him down!!! These stupid goons are so outdated, each time they’ll denied by saying misquoted by the press, but we have cam corder everywhere la. You are caught with your pants down, and it’s not a nice view!!!
November 19, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I completely agree with you guys that he should do the honourable thing, apologise and resign. But having lived in Bolehland for 35 years, I know this will never ever happen.
November 19, 2008 at 9:21 pm
during the 60s, 70s and early 80s, most of the commonwealth adopted many of our local legal cases and authorities.
nowadays, i don’t think that they are adopting any of our legal precedents as are no longer anywhere in the streamline of the law, from purified waters changing into muddied streams.
i see it coming mate. Karpal, do something about it
November 20, 2008 at 12:22 am
Karpal is not called the the Lion for nothing. We roar with you on this one! Stupid gomen appointing a liar to the top of judiciary, against the petition of the Rakyat, is not the way to revive the judicial integrity. May God continue to raise more Lions to come to the fore and exercise “amal ma’aruf, nahi munkar” even though they are not muslims. Shalom.

Hi people relax. It is just common sense. We have a corrupted government and do you expect they will put someone who is honest with integrity as the CJ. No way mah..It must be corrupted ones right down the line..must be of the same kind.
