Have we really migrated from indifference and apathy in the face of oppression of the other?
December 31, 2008

On 31st July, 2005, the Terengganu state government ripped into the heart of the Sky Kingdom community in Besut, tore down ornamental structures built as a labour of love by some of the gentlest people I have ever met, and flattened the village, sparing only dilapidated wooden houses and the gravesite of Mad Ya who, since 2000, had his statutory declaration that he renounced Islam rejected by officialdom and who yet, upon his death in 2003, was refused a burial plot at the Muslim cemetary by that same officialdom on the grounds that he was an apostate.

The giant umbrella that stood until 31/7/2005

The teapot that was no more after 31/7/2005

The maze of walkways that was reduced to rubble on 31/7/2005

The day after. A job well done

All gone

Pleasing in the sight of the God of the Terengganu state authorities
Claudia Theophilus, in a report dated 31st July, 2005 in Malaysiakini quoted one of the villagers as follows :
“Can you hear the loud noises? The buildings are crumbling as we speak. They are now breaking down the main hall – it’s the last of all,” said one of the followers when contacted at the village about 2.30pm today.
“The whole place has been destroyed. There is nothing left, not even as a remembrance.”
Five days later, in another report in Malaysiakini, Claudia reported as follows :
‘The terraced landscape in the center of the village has been practically flattened after the four-day demolition exercise and now lies in pitch darkness.
The circular tracks of tractor and truck tyres are nothing more than muddy puddles now. Pieces of the bright-yellow roof over the umbrella tower replica were strewn everywhere.
Blocks of roman pillars and ballustrades were scattered at the edges of where the Sky Kingdom centerpiece once stood, framed by the followers’ houses.
Steel and iron rods were jutting from the ground. A crumpled footrug lay muddied at the site of the main hall.
The mighty structures are only marked by the bits and pieces of building material used in their construction.
The circular dais where Ayah Pin used to sit during regular weekend gatherings and main events looked almost intact, covered by dust, debris and broken marble.
The authorities – the Besut district council, Public Works Department and the Besut land office – reportedly remarked how sturdy and solid the concrete-and-marble structures had been based on the difficulty of tearing them down.
The fenced-up grave of Mohamad Ya, or Ustaz Ya, at one corner of the commune is the only ‘built-up space’ left untouched’
I had heard that on the morning of the demolition, those involved had held a solat hajat, to ask God to fill them with strength and fortitude enough to do that which they were soon to do. And that soon after the demolition was completed, at a majlis kesyukuran, there was much rejoicing in that God would indeed be pleased with those who had partaken in this jihad.
Stripped of all fanciful arguments, the destruction of the Sky Kingdom was nothing short of genocide.
An attempt to obliterate a chosen way of life simply because it did not sit with the views of those in authority and who, they would have us believe, represent the majority.
The villagers , who had turned to SUHAKAM for help both before and after the demolition, found little comfort there.
News of the annihilation of this village was carried by all the main stream media.
Through all this, civil society remained silent and looked the other way.
Why?
Each of you must answer this question for yourself.
What I do know is that whilst we can never give back to the Sky Kingdom villagers what was taken away from them, we can resolve never to let this ever happen again.
We can resolve that we will not allow the current Pakatan Rakyat Selangor state government to do to the Ahmaddiyah community in Selayang what the UMNO led Terengganu state government did to the Sky Kingdom villagers in 2005.
Malaysiakini reports today that this community has come under renewed attacks from the authorities, especially the Selangor religious department, and quotes the Selangor Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Infrastructure and Basic Amenities Committee chairperson Dr Hasan Ali as having vowed to “bury” this community.
I reproduce below the report in full for those who are not subscribed to Malaysiakini.
_______________________________________________
While Malaysian Muslims this week ushered in their new year, members of a small Islamic sect huddled in a mosque in Selayang, Selangor, pondering about their future.
Their faith has come under renewed attacks from the authorities, especially from the Selangor religious department.
Only recently, the Selangor Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Infrastructure and Basic Amenities Committee chairperson Dr Hasan Ali had vowed to “bury” the movement.
They have been issued warnings not to put up Quranic verses and holy logos in their mosque. In addition, their main mosque and the land it is sitting on in Kampung Nakhoda, Selayang, are facing imminent seizure from the state religious authorities.
So who are these people? And why are they such a threat?
The group has been labeled by the state religious authorities as Qadiani and accused of practising deviationist teachings.
But sect members call themselves Jemaat Ahmadiyah Muslim Malaysia, a branch of an international Ahmadiyah movement.
“We are definitely not involved in deviationist teachings. We are all Muslims, just like the others, including Dr Hasan and his PAS people,” said Ahmadiyah Malaysia’s leader Ungku Adnan Ismael.
“There are many lies being propagated against us by the religious authorities,” he told Malaysiakini recently during a meeting which also included some of his sect members.
While most of them had a lot to say about how they were being treated by the state religious authorities, they nevertheless agreed to channel their views through their spokesperson Ainul Yakin Mohd Zain, a born Ahmadiyah follower.
The lies and the truth
In recent weeks, Hasan, also the Selangor PAS chief, was reported in the media as saying that this sect believed its members were prophets and descendants of slaves; that the haj can be performed in India; and were using modified verses in the Quran.
“None of this is true. We perform our haj in Mecca, just like all other Muslims. We use the holy Quran, without any modification. We pray five times a day, using the same verses used by other Muslims,” said Ainul.
Their only difference is – and it IS a major one – that they believe that there is another prophet after Muhammad. And for them, this new messiah is their founder Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani.
For the mainstream Islamic believers in Malaysia, this is a strong deviation from the true teachings of Islam as for them there is only one prophet and that is Muhammad.
Any other Islamic teaching which propagates the existence of a new prophet is automatically deemed deviant, and this included the Ahmadiyah movement.
The Ahmadiyah movement was founded by Mirza Gulam in India in 1889.
Qadiani is the village Mirza Gulam was born in 1839. He had declared himself as the promised messiah in 1891 and as the new prophet in 1901. Mirza Gulam died in 1908.
The movement is now headed by the fifth successor, Hadrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who is overseeing the international Ahmadiyah movement from his base in London, United Kingdom.
The Ahmadiyah teaching in Malaysia is not a new phenomenon.
It found its way to this shores in the 1930s. Their first base was in Jeram, Selangor, although in the years that followed Kampung Nakhoda had taken over as the unofficial headquarters for the movement.
At its height, the movement had about 10,000 members. Today, they stand at about 1,000 to 1,500, of which 500 are from Selangor.
“We have a strong following in Selangor, followed by Sabah and some in Johor,” said Ainul.
‘We are liberal Muslims’
The Ahmadiyah teaching was strenuously rejected by the local religious authorities from early on. A fatwa was declared against the movement in 1975.
Ainul said that the fatwa meant that the Ahmadiyah followers were not considered Muslims and their place of worship could not be called mosques.
“This is why we have not been charged in any syariah courts because we are not considered Muslims.
“Our mosque is only referred as a building for our gathering and not as a mosque as we are not allowed to call it a mosque due to our status,” he added.
These however, he added, had never stopped them from being true Muslims.
“Come to our mosque and you will see us praying like all the others. Nothing is different.
“Of course, we are more open minded than most of them. We believe that if you want to convert out, you may do so…
“That is something which you will have to deal with your maker… not us,” he added.
Likewise, he said, members of the Ahmadiyah were open to hold discussions on religion and interfaith dialogues, something which has been avoided by the mainstream Islamic groups.
He claimed that PAS leader Hasan was only trying to “make himself a hero by pushing for actions against us”.
“His is a political move – a move to portray himself and his party as true Muslims and all others as non-believers,” added Ungku Adnan.
“Orthodox Muslims, like PAS, would not like us. The enlightened one, however, may agree with us,” he added.
Running out of time
Ainul said that the next step for the Ahmadiyah movement was to explain its teachings to the people and the authorities.
“Even when the fatwa was issued, we were not called in to explain our teachings. And now Hasan, PAS and the Selangor religious authorities are working to clamp down on us.
“Why don’t they invite us for a dialogue? Or better still, if they think we are deviating from the true teaching, why not try to reform us?” asked Ainul.
“What we don’t want is to become a victim of a political game. We want to be left alone to practice our belief as Muslims. And they must realise that we are no different from them,” he added.
But before any of these can be done, the Ahmadiyah movement must first stem the state machinery which has been given the green light to forcibly remove Quranic verses and Islam logos from their ‘building’ (read: mosque) beginning tomorrow.
Plans are also afoot to use the National Land Code to examine the legality of the movement’s purchase of land several years ago, on which the mosque stands.
Ungku Adnan and his followers are worried that if the move against them is successful, they will not be around to celebrate Awal Muharram next year as Ahmadiyah followers.
___________________________________________________
I have gotten to know some of the Ahmaddiyah, including Ainul Yakin, just as I have come to know the Sky Kingdom villagers.
To the best of my knowledge, they are not militant in any way nor do they subscribe to any tenets that might be objectively perceived to be immoral by any standards.
In fact, based on their stance on notions of equality and brotherhood, I would venture to say that they could teach Dr Hasan Ali a thing or two about what is truly Islam based on the Holy Qur’an.
And, yes, there are differences in their understanding of Islam with that of my own.
Just as there are significant differences between my understanding of Islam with that of the mainstream ahlul sunnah wal jamaah in this country.
These are differences permitted by God in the Holy Qur’an and protected by the Constitution which is the supreme law of this land.
And it is these differences of opinion and understanding that serve as the test of our willingness to, firstly, peacably coexist with one who’s view starkly differs with one’s own and, more importantly, to rise in defence of the right of minorities such as the Ahmaddiyah and Sky Kingdom to live with their beliefs in peace.
The Pakatan Rakyat state governments, Kelantan aside, are a reality today because the people voted for change on 8th March.
Are we to take the menacing stance taken by Dr Hasan Ali towards the Ahmaddiyah community as representative of all of the Selangor state exco?
Is Dr Hasan’s stance representative of the people of Selangor?
And you, yes you who are reading this now, will you look the other way again?
On 12th November December, this year, about 40 anak Bangsa Malaysia made their way to Rasa in Hulu Selangor to defend the right of Hindu brothers and sisters to perform prayer rituals from possible interference by the police.
To those 40, I now ask, what of the threat to our Ahmaddiyah brothers and sisters?

Goodness me! Another prophet after Muhammad?? No matter how great your write up was, blasphemy is still blasphemy to me.
I am definitely looking the other way.

Deviant teachings are deviant teachings…Remember that was the fight of Rasulullah SAW to clear the idols worshipped by the pagans. What’s the point of considering yourself as a moslem if you cant understand the meaning of syahadah in the first place?
December 31, 2008 at 5:50 pm
And who decides what is “deviant” and what is not? Who was given that right? I always thought that that right belonged to God. The Holy Quran says “Let there be no compulsion in religion” (Surah 2:256). Even the Bible says “Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone”.
December 31, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Whoever says that the Bible and the Koran is/are the final word(s) of god?
God him/herself? If through someone else, how do I know that he/she is the mouthpiece of god? Just because many people think so?
So please people, live and let live. Nobody has a monopoly on truth. Even among Muslims, Christians and Jews themselves, they cannot agree what god said or did not say.
So, jury is still out on who says what. Till god speaks from the sky directly and unequivocably to us, each should have the freedom to believe what they wish so long as they do not rob, kill, maim, deceive or steal.
Blasphemy? Silly and useless notion because nobody can say for 100% certainty what is the ultimate truth.

Fact: Historically there were more genocide, pillaging, looting, rape etc etc been committed by in name of GOD than in the name of Satan. Therefore in my view Satan must really be an Angel.
Speaking of Qadiani, I do recall that there use to a very enterprising Malay gentleman operating a Nasi Lemak joint in front of Tanglin Hospital (near Masjid Negara). The Nasi Lemak was enjoyed by all Malaysians. Sometime, in early 1980 rumours spread among the Malay public servants that he was a Qadiani and as result many Muslims public servants stopped patronising the place. I am sure the Nasi Lemak place is still flourishing.
Haris, I hope that you will garner support from all fair minded Malaysian to stop this ludicruos action by Selangor religious department.
Happy New Year.

This post got me thinking…..i mean…The Ahmadiyah teaching sound very open but another prophet after Muhammad? You must be kidding. I know i’m not that religious but there’s no prophet after Muhammad for sure. He’s the last one and it’s even mention in Al-Quran.
January 1, 2009 at 1:25 am
We are just mortal.
Who are we to decide or condemn on other people’s belief?
Just because they believe something different from THE MAJORITY, does that mean they deserve to be treated like that?
January 1, 2009 at 1:46 am
Honestly, the issue here is not about whether there’s another prophet after Prophet Mohammad. It is about standing up for the right of every individual to freely believe what he or she wants to believe in. To each his/ her own. Is it so wrong for someone to believe something that’s not mainstream? So if everyone takes rice for his/her meals and you’re the only one who takes bread or noodles, does that make you a criminal? Really, we love to fall into the trap of preaching and judging others, we forget we’re actually committing the biggest sin on earth, bigger than believing there’s another prophet than Prophet Mohammad.

Blasphemy? Deviant? Has anyone of us met GOD him/herself? Was the blowing up of the 1700 year old Buddha of Bamiyan statues by the the self proclaimed know all of Islam, the taliban, an order from GOD? WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE!
Assalamu alaikum.

The same people who acted against Ayah Pin are no better than genocidal Israelis. These hypocrites condemn Israel in the strongest terms, yet their actions against freedom-loving Malaysians show they are ready to use similar Gestapo tactics to gain Brownie points among the mainstream Muslims. I am no expert on Ayah Pin or Ahmadiyah, but at least I now understand their objectives, thanks to Haris. These people are now treated like lepers, their fate at the hands of sycophantic Umno and Pas leaders. If this is not genocide, then what is? I admire Haris for standing up for a cause nobody wants to go near to. I salute you, Haris.
nstman,
Just trying to do what I think I can.
January 1, 2009 at 3:35 am
Hello Haris.
I wish you good health, peace and happiness in 2009 and for dear God’s help in your brave battle to scale up the huge tiresome mountains of ignorance, heartlessness and treacherous sneakiness (sadly, even amongst some of the secularly and religiously well-educated people)that have been created over a long period of time by the deliberate application of layers upon layers of confusing obfuscation by those who were either ignorant themselves or who were more likely to have had vested interests to gain from.
But nevertheless, being a fool I still believe that somehow the true compassionate God who lives within us all will not abandon us but will persevere in showing us the Way of Truth.
I will however, continue to pray for whatever it is worth, that good sense and human decency and compassion will prevail in this and other similar matters in the end. That Almighty God will somehow send the right guides to help clear away some of the thickets of obfuscation, build some good bridges of understanding and help protect all who are now persecuted and bereft, such as the bullied Sky Kingdom and Ahmaddiyah followers you mention, and also all those others who are still suffering from man’s inhumanity to humankind, like those innocent children and adults on BOTH sides of the divide in Israel and Palestine who are now being butchered shamelessly as… er….”unavoidable collateral damage” in front of us all (on our television sets) and before a watching paralysed world full of seemingly impotent “leaders”. And all done unflinchingly and cold-bloodedly in the same names of human ignorance, greed, deliberate obfuscation and devious politicking to win elections and attain self-serving personal and political power.
So will we ever learn to behave as God’s children? Well, right now I have to say that there doesn’t appear to be much hope.
For it amazes me how the people of Israel can allow and condone these indiscriminate attacks and barbaric murders by their security forces on innocent fellow human beings in their name after having themselves suffered and experienced first-hand the barbaric cruelty inflicted upon six million of them by Hitler’s Nazis in one of the worst examples to date of man’s inhumanity to fellow humankind.
Equally, I cannot understand why Hamas and other Palestinian militants would want to irresponsibly and indiscriminately bomb Israel and kill innocent Israelis when these militants can clearly foresee the (reasonably) expected Israeli response to such attacks and the certain cost to the mainly innocent Palestinian people who these militants are clearly unable to protect after having deliberately provoked such a potential attack from Israel.
So that mountain of tiresome ignorance just got higher I think.
But…..thank you again Haris, for the effort you put in here so tirelessly in this A-list blog and for being willing to suffer the constant barrage of cheap, ill-informed and ill-mannered taunts and ridicule from those who come here with far less knowledge, insight or understanding.
So as it’s the end of one year and the start of another, I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR and I add in all honesty that you probably have no idea how much what you are doing here is appreciated by confirmed veteran fools like me!
May God guide you and keep you safe always.
“Imagine Power To The People” John Lennon.
anna,
From one veteran, idealistic fool to another, God bless you.

Brother Haris and / or Rafi,
Deviant teachings are deviant teachings…Remember that was the fight of Rasulullah SAW to clear the idols worshipped by the pagans.
Before I comment any further on the question put forth by Brother Haris, I would like to seek some guidance from any learned muslim scholar out there to enlighten me on the following issues :
1) If Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) propagated demolition of idols in His quest to uphold ISLAM, meaning to say the SUPREME being can never be associated with any objects, idols etc, why are we praying in the direction of the HOLY KAABAH or addressing the HOLY KAABAH in our prayers ?. Doesn’t this constitute to some form of idol (or object / just mere general direction – i.e. westward) worship ?.
2) Isn’t this (Q2) the same in all other major faiths in the world where some form of physical manifestations (idols, statues or objects) were used to worship the SUPREME BEING ?. Why does the other religions considered to be PAGAN RELIGION in the eyes of ISLAMIC teachings (or so it has been said) ?.
2) Why is there a physical representation of JAMRAH on which the stoning of the devil is carried out ?.
3) What is HAJAR ASWAD for ?.
4) If the MUSLIMS are supposed to be following only one teaching, of the HOLY QURAN as the ONLY TRUE TESTAMENT OF ISLAM, why are there two sets of believers (SUNNI and SYIAH) allowed ? Which set now follows the true teachings of the great religion of ISLAM as propagated by the HOLY QURAN ?.
5) How are these two sects considered as NON-DEVIANTS when the are some contradictions in their belief ?.
6) If this (Q5) is allowed, in what way does the Ahmadiyah, Al-Arqam, Sky Kingdom be classified as DEVIANTS ?. Does this means that what is allowed and not depends on the powers that be, not according to the TRUE TEACHING in the HOLY QURAN ?.
This are not the only questions / doubts that I have on the religion of ISLAM ?. I will just start with this for now. I would appreciate it if any learned Ustaz could shed some light on this for the better understanding on Islam, to benefit of all readers.
P/S : This comment is written on a genuine intent to learn more about the religion of ISLAM and is not meant to belittle the beautiful religion in anyway. It was written in good faith, to seek for greater understanding among believers of various faith and should never be considered as INSULTING ISLAM.
kraznyoctybar
kraznyoctbyar,
Firstly, don’t allow anyone to tell you that you may not question the various practises of those who profess Islam as their faith.
I have deliberately put it as ‘practises of those who profess Islam as their faith’ rather than tenets of the faith as I too think some are disputable as being prescribed by the good book.
Although I am not an ustaz, I would gladly answer all of your questions here, except that I then run the risk of mainstreamers treating me as their latest JAMRAH.
Catch me at the next anti-ISA vigil, buy me a teh tarik, and I will gladly share with you my 2 sen.
Meanwhile, keep on asking, bro.

A forceful article, touching on a rights issue few dare address and address in such a forthright manner.
I find the treatment of the Sky Kingdom community by the authorities a cruel tragedy.
My position on the matter is that if someone wishes to think and practice about something they feel strongly about or are at peace with, if they do not foist their thoughts and beliefs upon others, if no harm is caused to others, then simply let them be.
West Malaysians are unfortunately still a very highly sensitive lot, meek and prone to bigotry. As for the authorities, they imprint their proclaimed righteousness (as exemplified by their treatment of the Sky Kingdom community) to score points or curry favour. In sum, the rights of minorities are trampled upon by certain parties to obtain broader political mileage. And this we have seen being demonstrated elsewhere (e.g., Jerit, BERSIH, HINDRAF).
Pak Sako,
I pray that God will continue to bless us with good people like you.

Come on, what makes you so sure there won’t be another prophet after Muhammad S.A.W.?
Lagipun the series of ‘prophets’ in the Testaments and in Islam are prophets for these two religions lah, not really prophets for the whole world… maybe other religions have their own spiritual leaders. Better still, according to modern history and our current world view, we may have our own ‘prophets’ too — people who speak for the conscience of the ordinary people and fight for common rights, sanity, decency, morality, environmental justice… people like Gandhi can be considered a universal prophet of the people too.
Think about it……..

I have considered the teachings of Ayah Pin and with my own spiritual understandings I can say that Ayah Pin has definitely found or realised god! Ayah Pin is a man of spiritual visions. He is the best the malay community has produced. Ever!
From the little I know of the Ahmeddiyas, it certainly looks far better then the general body of sunni muslims. Surely they got somethings right.
There is no such thing as the last prophet or the last word of god. Those who utter that are the ones most lost, who know nothing of religion and spiritualism other than memorised words. In islam the rasul is the last prophet but it was AT THAT TIME. In 732 CE he was the last.
The idea of prophets is a abrahamic concept. Other religions, who form the majority of the world’s population do not even accept the concept of god’s mouthpiece in earth. What a ridiculous idea! Why would god need a mouthpiece when he is already within everyone? He surely knows how to reach out to one through one’s own conscience. It is because of such oxymoronic ideas that people do not take islam and christianity seriously. It shows the absence of logic.
This fixation to prophets is what is preventing people from a higher understanding of religion and spirituality. However the rest of humanity do accept the idea of saints, innumerable ones who have had a glimpse or visions of god, continuously. I myself know several in Malaysia, here in Subang, Cheras and Kota Kemuning. Ayah Pin is another one. Anyone of them could write an entire bible or koran if they wanted to.
The treatment of the Sky Kingdon, Al Arqam and the Ahmeddiyas clearly indicates the lack of religious freedom in Malaysia, especially among the malays. They can’t even follow their own religion in their own understanding!
The Admeddiyas shall not be held in captivity. We shall stand with them and attend their function in a show of solidarity. Haris, please arrange! And don’t forget to invite the Rasa folks.
BTW, Syed Akbar has a hilarious article on Dead Men’s Tales & Texts at http://syedsoutsidethebox.blogspot.com/
This would be a good opening chapter for muslims and christians.

Concept of Truth is not Truth.Concpts are label pointing to the the subject matter. If it is an everyday object like flower,it can easily be pointed and describe in terms of shape, size and colour and even a hint of smell and taste. But when it points towards GOD[TRUTH],the mind failed as GOD is INCONCIEVEABLE.Our six senses can only deal with the conceivables. The inconceivable cannot come into conciouseness as it is upstream of IT and the very SOURCE of conciousness.Hearing can hear sounds, but hearing CANNOT hear ‘hearing’.Contemplation[meditation] on SOURCE will leave us stranded as Truth.Nabi Isa stated ‘Me and my Father AM ONE’
However if we only have a concept of truth,it is the nature of mind to ask in dichotomy such as real truth and false truth and this was planted into our DNA when Nabi Adam took the bite of the apple.
Revisit the kithab often and allow our understanding to slowly loosen the knots in our conciouness and let God premeates us[as have been all this while throgh his grace]without RESISTANCE[surrender].GOD’s love is unconditional and do not laced it with nuf when we read from scripture statements such as ‘knock and the door[to God]shall be open;ask and ye shall received[God' grace]

For those commentators like Joe, Rafi etc who take the stand that deviation is deviation and that blasphemy is blasphemy I have this to say. To Muslims don’t you think that Christianity and Judaism is a deviationist sect and vice versa. Since all are Abrahamic religions right. So my dear Malaysians, sometimes things are not so clear is it.
Even for the mainstream Christians they consider the Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, Christian Scientology etc as cults and therefore deviationists. But most Christians don’t go about tearing down the churches and places of worship of these “cults” do they. Yes many mainstream Christians will angrily disagree with the tenets of belief and theology of these cults but they will certainty not forcefully prevent these cults the freedom to practice their own beliefs. This can only happen if you have real faith in what you believe in and no amount of cults can change that. After all did’nt GOD say the strongest of these is Love. So if you want to win the battle to get others to believe what you practice is the truth then use Love and not force with tractors and racist politics and by mere force of the majority. Might is not right.
Yes I think what happened to the Ayah Pin believers is against human rights and also unconstitutional.
As to the Ahmadiyah followers, we should let them practice what they believe. In fact if you forcefully terrorise them to prevent them practising their religion/cult, then you are the terrorist in their minds. They are Malaysians too and should have the same rights as any other Malaysian to practice whatever they wish.
First and foremost, we must promote basic human rights and the rights to practice whatever we think is right as long as no one gets militant or violates common decency.
In the end, you shall know them by their fruits.
January 1, 2009 at 7:04 pm
So we start 2009 with another merry go round.
Don’t these proponents of the traditional religious practices of the majority not see that they do greater damage to their professed believes than any deviant can?
Christians believe the coming of Jesus Christ. I do believe Muslims also have a similar belief of the return of their Prophet.
Now, I believe when Jesus comes he will be wearing blue jeans, a RPK No Holds Barred T Shirt holding a PDA in his hands, and who knows, maybe RPK’s favourite cigar!!
Question is will I recognise Him when he makes the appearance? Or will I be waiting to see the image that has been impressed in my head by the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo?
Let it be known to Hasan Ali and the likes of him that he will be the first to deny the Prophet when the Prophet does in fact make an appearance in front of him.
So how does Hasan know that whether the Prophet has appeared in Ayah Pin’s tea cup or the place of worship of these Jemaat Ahmadiyah Muslim Malaysia?
And if they are going to actually do damage to this place, how do they know if in fact the Prophet or God Himself may not be present watching all this in the guise of one guy who sent me his wishes for 2009? Apparently my 2008 wishes were all xxxxed up!!
Hehehe
January 1, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Why, Haris? Why do you have to end 2008 with a ‘tough’ posting?
Anywayz, decided to stay home for New Year’s eve to take care of other priorities hence had a lot of spare time to ponder on your request when I’m not otherwise engaged.
Q? How do the JAMM followers reconciled their belief with the presence of another prophet after Muhammad (pbuh) when uttering the syahadah?
Granted, in its basic transliteration, the syahadah describes Muhammad (pbuh) as God’s Messenger. Nothing was said of him being the LAST messenger (within the context of the syahadah). And mind you, the syahadah is often used as the ‘key to the front door’ of Islam when receiving new believers to the flock.
Where am I going with this? Well, consider the following:
Muslims acknowledge the existence of JC (pbuh) in the Quran and that he will be resurrected through Allah’s divine intervention. If so, can anyone say for certain if JC has arrived and living, without growing older, amongst us? With the ongoing and increasing religious strife on Mother Earth, wouldn’t JC step up from time to time to save humanity?
Having said this, I must add that there’s no intended malice towards my muslim brethren in their understanding of Islam but if we choose to stand with Malaysians of other faith(s) in the fight against oppression, then the same opportunity must be given to JAMM to state their case.
Haris, it would help matters if you could get JAMM to tell us more of themselves here at TPP. Furthermore, how is it possible for the Selangor state ‘religious’ authorities to invoke the National Land Code (a secular document, in my mind) as a basis for their action? It appears to be an extra-legalistic move to obscure the facts and taken pre-emptively to circumvent any meaningful constructive engagement. More insidiously, is there a greedy developer eying that plot of land?
Truly, the thin line of our differences must be obliterated forever for peace to prevail.
Definitely something for all of us to chew on during 2009.

Dear Bro. Haris,
I want to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a Happy New Year.
Thank you for highlighting to us all the unpleasant things in high office. There are just too many imperfections in this imperfect world.
Only the other day you wrote” Blessed are the peacemaker”
Followup closely is ” Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.”
Only those who are contrite, humble, and submissively dependent upon God can inherit the earth of radiance, joy and contentment.
Have a Good year ahead and take care

I am not an ustaz but i will try to answer these questions as best as i could, from little i know. Ideally, when a non muslim (or muslims) is doubtful of certain matter in Islam, he or she should discuss this with the ulama’ or learned scholar. Haris or anybody in this forum, including myself, our words cant be taken as the final ruling on issues that you might have. More than 50% of you in here might have never taken the effort to actually talk to these ‘ulama’ or ustaz. Take the chance, and you might be surprise.
continue on …
Before I comment any further on the question put forth by Brother Haris, I would like to seek some guidance from any learned muslim scholar out there to enlighten me on the following issues :
1) If Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) propagated demolition of idols in His quest to uphold ISLAM, meaning to say the SUPREME being can never be associated with any objects, idols etc, why are we praying in the direction of the HOLY KAABAH or addressing the HOLY KAABAH in our prayers ?. Doesn’t this constitute to some form of idol (or object / just mere general direction – i.e. westward) worship ?.
A) the Kaabah serves as a point for the muslims to
pray towards to. The objective of this is to have
the muslims united even in the directions of where
they are facing in their solat (prayers). Muslims
are not worshipping the kaabah. Just like if a
muslim is praying in an open field, he or she has
to put a ‘divider’ in front of him/her. This can
be in the means of a chair, a book or even a line
that will inform someone who is walking, to not
walk in between me and Allah during my solat.
A) The Kaabah is merely a point for the muslims to
pray towards to when making solat. If the kaabah
wasnt there, our solat is still valid. When muslims
are at home, we dont have a rock or idols/statues
objects in front of us. Al-Quran is the words of
Allah, and we dont even have that in front of us.
Allah says that no other religion/beliefs is
accepted of him, except Islam. Any other belief is
rejected by Islam. Back in those days before the
coming of Muhammad sallahu alaihi salam, there were
christians who worshipped Allah and not Jesus
Christ as the christians now do. So, those
christians who worshipped Allah, are not considered
pagans.
2) Why is there a physical representation of JAMRAH on which the stoning of the devil is carried out ?.
A) This is to re-enact the scene that happened between
Ibrahim alaihi salam and the devil. Just how the
muslims re-enact the scene of Hagar finding water
for Ishmael. In my opinion, these acts are done to
make the muslims aware of what had happened. As for
the real reason, other than the Quran and the
sunnah, i do not know. Still, i dont see how this
would suggest the muslims worshipping idols.
3) What is HAJAR ASWAD for ?.
A) it is nothing but a stone. It has its history but
nothing more than that. Muslims do not worship it.
In fact, you wont hear a muslim talking about it
unless he/she is going to hajj.
A) Syiah sects is considered out of the fold of Islam
by most scholars. The creed of syiah sect is
considered a deviant act but the no judgement can
be placed on its followers unless they declare
openly or known to believe in the syiah creed.
so if i see a syiah, i treat him just as i would
treat a muslim. But if i hear him declaring that
angel gibrael has made a mistake, or the mother of
Islam had committed adultery, or there are 12 imams
we have to believe in … then his beliefs are
rejected of me.
So any sects that followed the teaching of the
Quran and the sunnah, is accepted.
5) How are these two sects considered as NON-DEVIANTS when the are some contradictions in their belief ?.
A) You have to be more specific. Even in the sunni
sects, there are sub categories of sects that are
clearly deviate from the teachings (as per Haris’s
article).
I know of some syiah followers who dont even know
what syiah means, and have been following the
traditional teaching of Islam. Can i judge them as
being misguided? obviously not. Some ppl just dont
know what those labels are sometimes.
A) none of these are allowed. There are clear proofs
that Muhammad salla hualaihi salam is the final
msger. If someone claims that he is the final msger
then, this is considered deviant.
In Islam, right is clear from wrong and vice-versa. This is not a religion where the unlearned can make rulings based on his logical thinking and his desire. You cant have someone who feels that the new direction of the kaabah should be afghanistan, so he decides that, he should gather some followers to make solat using afghanistan as a focal point for all the muslims in the world.
If we followed the opinions of most of you here, where ppl can do as they please, then we would have hundreds of different directions for the kiblat in our prayers.
I say yes, ppl can do whatever they want. You can build a sky kingdom or claim that you are the final prophet, but do not associate Islam with it. Label yourself something else. Do not use the Quran, or the sunnah. Do not claim yourself muslims.
If you feel that muslims should only pray 3 times a day, then go ahead, create a new religion, but do not use the movement of worship as ordained in Islam, ie. Takbir, ruku’, sujud etc. And label yourself that has nothing to do with Islam.
I want to make it clear though, that we do have differences in the Islamic school of thoughts. But none of these differences have anything to do with our tauhid (creed, concept of Allah). You might see a muslim from shafies praying with their hands crossed over his belly and not from a hanbalis. But like i said, none of these school of thoughts really differ from who Allah is and who Muhammad sallahu alaihi salam is.
And when you do have ppl making claims on the creed of Islam which doesnt go with the teaching of the Quran and its prophets, this is where you put a halt on it, and declare that it is deviant. Just like if someone has a cancer, the doctor would quickly remove the part where the cancer is before it spreads.
If you have a group of ppl in your community who practice in beastiality, would you not want them out? they’re not doing any harm to you nor your kids, yet, most of us would cringe at the idea of having someone, lest a group, to commit sexual desire with animals in our community.
Know that we, although are free to practice what we want, there are limitation and boundaries that we should abide to.
Salam RiNaZ,
Thank you for your attempt to answer the enquiry in one of the comments to this post.
I have to be frank and say that I do not necessarily agree with all that you have said here, but that is how it will be. There will always be differences of opinion. What, in my view, is the important binding factor for all those who profess a belief in Islam is the concept of tawhid.
My 2 sen, for now.

If these Ahmadiyyas are not considered muslims, how could the Islamic department have jurisdiction over them?
Comical Ali,
Bingo!
January 2, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Comical Ali, you’re misinformed, they’re muslims, their teaching isnt. A muslim is a muslim even if he/she practice deviant teaching, as long as they do not create partners with Allah.

Hang on to the Holy Kithab as you journey Home to GOD.All acripture are like maps that heip you navigate through the territory of SAMSARA.As long as one have not reach the destination, the need of guidance is there.
When we start reading the Qu’ran we have only speculation of its usefulness. As we start reading,we begin to understand many of the causes and effect in our mundane world and we are pleased. As the map lead us to more complex territory, doubts and confusion can arise as the scripture introduce us the more intangible aspect of Truth. It is here that in using words[concept] for one to peer into that beyond our normaal sense faculties, doubts starts to arise as certain passage in the same kithab appear to be contradictary. This is unavoidable as allegory displayed in forms can only point to the Truth which is formless and non-dual.The DNA,the power source of all living beings on earth cannot explain itself.
The scriptures actually anticipate the difficulties and instead of a solitary pointers, many pointers are given and when the direstions intersects,we reconcile all contaries and relativity and lead safely home.Once home,we may discard even the scriptures, but not before that[which applies to most of us]
in conveying the abstract, personifications and allegory are useful aid.Lets take a look at some of the ritual of our Hindu brothers when they celebate Deepavali. The devotees will light coconut oil lamps and they will hold ceromonies when coconuts will be smashed and broken. The oil lamp and coconut are mere representations. The coconuts symbolise our Ego from the most coarse of the body to the very subtle of the intellect. When to Ego is seen to be maya[illusionary]and attachment to it broken[like the coconut],The light of Brahman is UNVEILED as symbolised by the oil lamps.Unlike the oil lamp which depends on the wick and oil to be sustained, the form points the light of Truth which is Unborn and Timeless[The word Brahman is only a label,as various people around the world uses different labels to point to this Truth

Hmmm, these Ahamadiahs are not Muslim ! So their follows can be classified as apostates. In such a case, according to sharia law all these followers can be given the death sentence !.
What about the many other groups branded as deviationist by Jakim ?. Looks like Malaysia will have to build concentration camps to house all these so called deviationist.
January 2, 2009 at 2:09 pm
As a religion of control and repression, Islam destroys everything it touches
Malaysia is a monument to the destructive powers of Islam, yet you have been so convincingly brainwashed that you think Islam is perfection
Stand back, look, and laugh at yourselves. The rest of the world is
densemy,
The Islam that I have come to know and understand is nothing like what you have described here.
As I too once did, you fall into the error of judging the faith, not by what is prescribed, but by what is practised by those who see religion as a powertool.
If you took time out to study not just Islam but all the great faiths from their respective scriptures, you would find a common strand in all that advocate love, kindness and compassion.
Not to mention equality.

RELIGION !!! The most manupilated and the least understood. This is mainly done by our ELECTED politicians !!! Look at Hinduism and learn something from them. The oldest living set of codes ( NOT RELIGION ) to guide you for eternal peace. Even Athiestism is born out of Hinduism and others are like, Buddisim, Sikhism, Toaism, Cofusionism, Bahai and all other minor sects in Hinduism. The best part is all of these groups can sit and have great discussion about God and not feel intimidated against one and another. I just want to know why cant the Jews, Christians and Muslim do the same. Can someone PLEASE enlighten me !!!

Humanity has fought bitter and deadly battles and still continues till this hour and minute, arguing, fighting, killing, destroying over whose “God” is truly supreme; over whose “religion” is the purest.
Do you expect this time immemorial battle of “religions” and “gods” to ever just end like that?
Only the end of the world will lay to rest this rubbishing by humans who are mere mortals.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
An Overview
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a religious organization, international in its scope, with branches in over 193 countries in Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. This is the most dynamic denomination of Islam in modern history, with worldwide membership exceeding tens of millions.
The Ahmadiyya Community was established in 1889 by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) in a small and remote village, Qadian, in the Punjab, India. He claimed to be the expected reformer of the latter days, the Awaited One of the world community of religions (The Mahdi and Messiah). The Community he started is an embodiment of the benevolent message of Islam — peace, universal brotherhood, and submission to the Will of God — in its pristine purity. Hadhrat Ahmad proclaimed Islam as the religion of man: “The religion of the people of the right path” (98:6)
With this conviction, the Ahmadiyya Community, within a century, has reached the corners of the Earth. Wherever the Community is established, it endeavors to exert a constructive influence of Islam through social projects, educational institutes, health services, Islamic publications and construction of mosques, despite being bitterly persecuted in some countries. Ahmadi Muslims have earned the distinction of being a law-abiding, peaceful, persevering and benevolent community.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Islam was created under divine guidance with the objective to rejuvenate Islamic moral and spiritual values. It encourages interfaith dialogue, and diligently defends Islam and tries to correct misunderstandings about Islam in the West. It advocates peace, tolerance, love and understanding among followers of different faiths. It firmly believes in and acts upon the Qur’anic teaching: “There is no compulsion in religion.” (2:257) It strongly rejects violence and terrorism in any form and for any reason.
The Community offers a clear presentation of Islamic wisdom, philosophy, morals and spirituality as derived from the Holy Qur’an and the practice (Sunnah) of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him). Some Ahmadis’, like late Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan (who served as the first Foreign Minister of Pakistan; President of the 17th General Assembly of U.N.O.; President and Judge of the International Court of Justice, at the Hague), and Dr. Abdus Salam (the Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1979), have also been recognized by the world community for their outstanding services and achievements.
After the demise of its founder, the Ahmadiyya Community has been headed by his elected successors — Khalifas. The present Head of the Movement, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, was elected in 2003. His official title is Khalifatul Massih V.

If you all considered all religions are true and came are from the Real God then The God must be crazy and idiot…because He is also so confused about the truth that He want to tell human races. Sometime He want Hindu, but after that He change the religion to Jews, then to Christian then to Islam then to Ayah Pin…How stupid this God is?
Who is God actually?
Is He all knowing? Omnipotent? or Just like man brain!!
Or do we think God is like us?
Or did God so stupid that He unable to choose some one that is the wise man or the very esteem man to be His messenger or just a man like Ayah Pin to be his messenger?
If you think God is all knowing then He must tell us only one religion that is suite to human being not so many religions that will bring to disintegration of human races in this world.
If God is not wise enough than He is not the real God. IF you believe all religions is right then…
what the different between believe in God and atheist?

This Hasan Ali guy has been trouble from day one after the election. He was even ready to make a pact with UMNO and apparently enticed with the position of MB. With just a few seats in Selangor, he seems to be calling the shots, as we found out during the PKNS CEO fiasco and then came his alcohol interference. The way PAS is bulldozing its ideologies with scant or no regard to the sensitivities of the non-muslims. Just like the MCA, MIC, etc in the BN, the other Pakatan Rakyat members seem to be somehow controlled by PAS. If this continues, then the PR may lose support gradually.

[...] Over in Haris Ibrahim’s website, there was a story about Ahmadiyya Muslim in Malaysia and why they were under microscope of our authority, because they have been labelled as [...]
January 4, 2009 at 10:16 am
Hi Haris,
Sorry, I am a little late in my comments. So, I have posted them in the MT site under the same posting. I am re-posting here for record purposes.
“The sky kingdom episode was a sad and tragic one which should not have happened but it did. Hopefully, everyone learns some lessons from it. The way to go is to allow freedom of religion. If a particular group of Muslims practices a different form of belief and if it does not have conflict with any human rights, it should be allowed. Otherwise, there will be prosecutions and enmity among the people concerned and there will not be peaceful co-existence.
The sky kingdom episode has in fact not ended. Kamariah and a few others I believe, are still incarcerated with their personal freedom being curtailed. Anyone with the right sense of mind should not condone this. Okay, the mainstream Islamic Authority has “no choice” but to do that to prevent an exodus if they allow them to convert out, but the end does not justify the means.
The Authorities must know that they cannot keep on persecuting their own people who are practicing different forms of the religion. As it is now, you have the Ahmadiyah community to deal with; later, you have the so-called liberals to contend with. With globalization, our borders will be opened to all the other sects such as Shia, Sufis, Wahhabis, hanifa, maliki, etc and the authorities will be under siege all the time.
This is a terrible situation to be in and I empathise with them. If a solution is not worked out soon, we can expect a lot of conflict and suffering among fellow Muslims and the politicians will have a field day playing up the issues. I can see and hear the rumblings between the conservatives and the liberals, not to mention the dissatisfaction of the Muslim ladies as well. My humble suggestion is to have round-table discussions among the various parties to thrash out the differences and come to some amicable solutions to maintain the Ummah. The muzakarah as proposed by the Ahmadiyah group is a pretty good start.”
Peace to all mankind.

For some reason, I keep thinking it was in the 90s.
January 13, 2009 at 7:06 pm
The old testament said that a messiah will come sitting on a donkey. When Jesus arrived the jews failed to recognise him but instead sought and succeeded in killing him even after pontius pilate proclaimed that he was spotless. The jews today continue to wait for the arrival of their messiah.
Thus was borned a new religion – christianity. The christians believe that jesus christ will return. When prophet muhammad came and declared that he was a prophet sent by God and jesus was the prophet before him. The christians today continue to wait for the arrival of the new messiah.
In every revelation by a new prophet the status quo will always challenge it and even sought to destroy it. Very few people will be able to recognise the new prophet that came. It had been said that a prophet is never recognised at home and one buddhist master said it best when he said that if buddha were to walk amongst us today very few will recognise him. It is because of our delusions. It is also our delusions that we will see the buddha. This is why a zen master recommended that “if you see the buddha, kill him.”
The point I am making is that ALL OF US are deluded and one group should never set itself up as the sole determiner of truth and what is right. There should be space for all to pursue their spiritual quest as long as it does not harm others. The fact that a religious setup (religious dept.) had chosen to harm a harmless group meant that they themselves had violated the dictates of their own religion.
When there is space peace and harmony will bless our own spiritual practice. Unfortunately very few people who claimed to practice any form of spiritual practice do not have space in their heart to allow others to have space.
