The pulse of the Chinese voters
January 13, 2009

We’ve made so many Chinese friends in Kuala Terengganu over the last week.
And my long-held belief that on the ground, we do not have a race relations problem has been once again vindicated by the folk in Kuala Terengganu.
No, the people of Kuala Terengganu have wisened up to BN’s constant playing of the race card whenever they are in a tight corner.
This afternoon, the Barisan Rakyat team were feted to lunch in Kampung Cina. Superb Terengganu peranakan food. We were not allowed to pay.
Last week, we were invited out to a private club for food and drinks. Again, our friends refused to allow us to share the bill.
Incidentally, those friends who hosted us at the private club were later visited by the cops and advised not to take RPK & Co to the club again!
Well, those friends took us out last night to meet and make more Chinese friends at a different location from the last.
In the course of the evening, one of them showed me an sms from MCA, in Chinese, that translated to read : “Please vote for BN. A vote for the moon will change the world”.
An obvious reference to the Islamic state issue.
I asked around for their take on the sms.
One said that MCA was bankrupt of issues to take to the voters if all they could harp on was the Islamic state issue.
Another said that giving Pakatan Rakyat one more parliamentary seat would not turn Terengganu into an Islamic state, as BN still ruled the state. He couldn’t understand MCA’s logic.
The conversation then turned to whether they were ok with Najib becoming PM in March, 2009. Would they prefer Pak Lah to stay on?
One responded that ‘dua-dua pun tak boleh pakai’. His grandmother, he said, would do a more honest job.
General consensus, though, was that Najib is a no, no.
Reason?
Altantuya!
Did they think that the oil royalty issue had been adequately resolved by the federal government? Was Wan Farid justified in refusing to debate the issue?
Most said that they could not make sense of the convoluted explanations from the government and had given up trying to understand the whole issue. All they knew was that a lot of money was missing from the till.
As for Wan Farid’s refusal to debate the issue, most were convinced that this was because he was afraid that he would not be able to answer embarassing questions about where the money has all gone.
Someone then narrated how the Terengganu MB, at a ceramah either yesterday or the day before had said something like this : “You baik sama saya, saya pun baik sama you. You tak baik sama saya, saya sepuluh kali tak baik sama you”.
The narrater said that the Chinese are a patient people. However, push them too far, and they will react. He felt the MB had gone too far with these remarks and that if word of this went far and wide, BN would pay for this at the polls.
Whilst BN might indeed well pay dearly for this, again, our new friends once again refused to allow us to pay for anything.

Incidentally, those friends who hosted us at the private club were later visited by the cops and advised not to take RPK & Co to the club again!

[...] “You baik sama saya, saya pun baik sama you. You tak baik sama saya, saya sepuluh kali tak baik sama you”. I read a commentary on Haris Ibrahim about what Dato’ Ahmad said had purported to say at a gathering with Chinese voters. You can read the full commentary over here http://harismibrahim.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/the-pulse-of-the-chinese-voters/ [...]

“Incidentally, those friends who hosted us at the private club were later visited by the cops and advised not to take RPK & Co to the club again!”
What has happened to the cops in this country? They seem hellbent on licking the boots of those in power. Is it survival instinct working overtime that since Najib is the anointed next PM, they have to prostrate and prostitute themselves even if it is against all norms of human decency?
What shameless mutts!

This attitude of BN – vote us in to be your MASTER – instead of realizing that the elected are SERVANTS of the people, and owe a DUTY to govern well and justly – this is what is all together wrong with BN!
Let’s boot them out!

Bro,
My cousing in KT says the moon is indeed shining bright. He told me that some quarters are promising RM 500-100 for the Indian community to vote for BN. Bangsat Negara is indeed desperate.
Keep up the momentum guys. Cheers..

I am quite happy that the citizens of this country called Malaysia are beginning to stand up and be counted for. For the past 15 years, since i decided to call this country my second home (i was from london, ENG), and enjoy the retiring days here…i have seen how politicians have manipulated the people with constant harassments, racists sentiments and ongoing public banning of freedom of expression have somehow reach the end of the road. The people are quite fed up with the current government’s way of handling issues ranging from social welfare, crime rates to economic issues. Its just too obvious that this government is asleep when they are suppose to be on watch for the future of the younger malaysians.
What in the world has gotten into these greedy politicians? Money is all that matters to them. They will somehow go to the end of the world to cause hardship for the people and in return, the people are left wondering whether anyone would save them from this treatment.
I am certain that their prayers came answered in the form of a huge March 8 2008 general election result. The wheel has been set in motion, let us all bind together to make sure that the wheel of change for the better for all malaysians be forever turning. God bless you all.

“You tak baik sama saya, saya sepuluh kali tak baik sama you”.
Greetings Haris and all.
The Chinese have this mindset of “eating bitterness” – don’t know how best to rationalise the expression but it is best applied when faced with adversity.
The veil threats from Trengganu MB won’t go down well – the Chinese vote en bloc is as good as lost to MCA, UMNO led BN.
Sticks and stones may break bones …. but we are right on course to drive UMNO from the seat of power – and let the will to persevere always remain for M’sians to distinguish between right from wrong.
Good tidings to all campaigning in KT.

You guys fully deserve all the free meals you can get! Thanks, Haris, for being on the frontlines with the Barisan Rakyat gang. With you totally in spirit.
January 13, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Haris, the Rakyat Bloggers have enjoyed the Chinese hospitality, equally, I can say the same of my malay bros…but, the Chinese do not like to be taken for granted. Using threats on the Chinese, that will be the last straw. You are very correct to say, the Chinese are a very patient race. This MB mentality is, the world owes him a living! He has demonstrated the Power of Abuse, a typical behavior of this UMNO-BN regime.

HARIS MY FRIEND.WE WILL VOTE FOR PAS AS ALWAYS.KAMI PANTANG DI CABAR HEHE MAKA SKRG KAMI SOKONG PAS DISINI.I MET YOU TWICE HERE HARIS AND SHAKE YOUR HAND TWICE TWO ONLY TWO DIFFERENT OCCASION.

usual threats from the mob.
believe it or not. the great Syed Albar seems to suggest that its ok to demonstrate against the murderous Israelis. But aint ok with demo against Sri Lanka! No mixing up, please according to the most idiotic Minister this country ever had. Thanks Hamid. You just put anothe nail on BN’s coffin.
January 14, 2009 at 12:31 am
Dear Haris,
Thank you so much for all that you and the other Barisan Rakyat bloggers are doing. I appreciate your dedication and sacrifice to ensure that the rakyat are told the truth, no matter what the cost. God bless you all abundantly! It was an honour to meet you all in KT and shake your hands
January 14, 2009 at 12:54 am
Angela Thompson, a big thank you to you for being an eye opener to the citizens of this country and also to the world. Your comments coming from a non-citizen and from a neutral perspective, look very credible from which ever angle that people look at. We need vocal people like you to keep on hammering at the situation in this country so that the sleepy ones will wake up and realize that changes are overdue.
The bloggers and activists who congregate at KT for the by-election go with a cause and a platform – and that is bring about change that will result in a more civil and liberal society, basis of democracy.
We all see the chronic corruption invading into every aspect of the government machinery, from greasing the palms of the policeman to buying votes and to stationing such a huge police force (7000 strong) to intimidate the voters. Happily, Malaysians have slowly learnt to forsake and lose their fear as evident at the many candlelight vigils in Selangor.
Thank you Angela and do stay longer and also bring in more eyes and ears into this country. Malaysia can still be saved.
January 14, 2009 at 1:10 am
Dear Haris, may I suggest that team Pakatan Pakyat make this point very clear to the chinese that a vote for Pas does not mean a vote for Pas’s idealogy. On the contrary, it is a vote for Pakatan Rakyat’s united stand against corruption.
Cheers and all the best to you and the rest of the team.

Sadly the Chinese is still the kingmaker in this coming 17 Jan 2008. They have many issue to worry about, TOL is one that is very immediate and urgent.
What happen if by 17 Jan, Bandar or Chinese voted for PAS? I worried that the yearly TOL might not be renewed!
Do you think the Chinese will take this gamble? What guarantee do they have? Protest? Who will listen?
Somehow who decide for TOL? State or Federal?

Umno already know bn is going to lose. They are now probably going into contingency as how to turn the inevitable loss into a gain of some form,by sowing seed of disorder and blaming it on PAS.Allah is watching and all the evil hidden hands will be exposed.Let the drama unfold.
January 14, 2009 at 6:19 am
BN wins, BN takes your money out of your pockets to put into their pockets and then puts some of your money (and that of the other rakyat people’s) back into your pockets as cheap bribes for your votes during these by and general elections so that they can win again and take even more of your and your family’s future money out of your pockets and put some more into their pockets.
See how it works
in a pesky way? And here is another working Truth.
All governments really only learn to respect people if you can convince them that you will suffer no fools at all glady or otherwise and so will kick them out post haste (so no gratitude or servitude!)if they do not work well and perform for you and act in your best interest. So…
waiting around for over fifty years twiddling your thumbs or otherwise to put this respect-enabling convincing action into practice is you see not at all recommended for good democratic health because it normally leads straight into the
pesky dire straits situation you all now find yourselves so very sorrily in. Hmm.
But anyways, don’t despair because the working antidote is there for you already. Really!
It is to simply take charge, see through the garbage and to kick out the patronising and condescending UMNO-BN and their bad respect and arrogance shown to all of you now hard-working, downtrodden, neglected, poor and ignored P036 KT-landers and to justly replace BN post haste with just about anything, but for now go for PR’s PAS.
Surely, at the very very worstest they can only be as incompetent and bad as BN is right now right?
But PAS may also be just that little bit or a whole lot better than BN is right now, right? But how will you know whether that is true or not conclusively if you don’t give the kicking-out of garbage change a try? Can you see?
And a very good opportunity to do exactly the highly sensible respect-enabling convincing action, or to go and give a try for change, is waiting for all of you for free just round that opportune 17th January 2009 KT-corner….so can you see it please ye good fols of P036 KT-land?
And if you P036 KT-landers really cannot resist taking the cheap bribes thrown at you now by BN, then as it’s yours anyway, take the money and run okay but make sure you vote for PR’s PAS anyway to apply the antidote of a respect-enabling convincing action change from BN for you and your family.
And the final truth in this post is that lying on the beach and simply looking up at the stars sometimes helps you to adjust your focus clearly.
WE SAY YEAH!
AND HARIS FOR AG & RPK FOR IGP! GO FOR DSAI FOR PM & LKS FOR DPM & KIND WAN AZIZAH FOR HOME MINISTER.
New 2009 Resolution: Seek out all garbage and recycle or dispose post haste for a healthier life and planet!

‘A Vote For The Moon would Change the World’

UMNO should get Ahmad Ismail to apologise to all chinese and Malaysians for his racist remarks……..
the UMNO racists have still not disiplined Ahmad ismail and have the audacity to ask for votes now
January 14, 2009 at 9:44 am
“You baik sama saya, saya pun baik sama you. You tak baik sama saya, saya sepuluh kali tak baik sama you”
Isn’t this a kind of threatening?
Doesn’t this sound like gangster collecting extortion fee from the people. “You jaga saya, saya jaga you. You tak jaga saya, nanti you tau”
Kuala Terengganu voters, don’t be threatened. Show him your guts. Show him that we will not bow to this kind threat. The government should be the people’s servant and not “gangster”.
January 14, 2009 at 10:03 am
Going down the wire, its BN’s negative campaigning vs PR focus on a few core issues. Interesting its no longer about the personalities which PR has won which ranks highly important in voters mind.
PAS is doing the right thing going down the wire focusing on the oil royalties. Its clear from every thing I have seen that voters regardless of race think the BN govt should and can do much much better with the oil royalties, i.e., it has been used wrongly and they don’t see any evidence it will be used in a better way. Its really why they think personality is very important because only with the right personality they think they will get their share and Wan Farid is not the guy and Endot is the right guy to make sure they don’t run off with it..
January 14, 2009 at 11:05 am
take all the money and vote for keadilan, kebenaran & islam!!!
January 14, 2009 at 11:10 am

Haris, do we need our MP to die first (& have another by-election) before we get to see $$$millions$$$ in development funds channeled into our constituency??? Otherwise, we get nothing.
Is this how we are going to be a developed nation by 2020???
January 14, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Hi all,
Thanks Haris for the pointer, but rather than condemning Dato’ Ahmad Said, we should be thankful because he has laid it cyrstal clear the repurcussions of throwing the vote the other way.
KT Chinese were doing fine before the election, now they have a choice, should they give in to emotion and risk their future, or should they do the prudent thing and preserve their way of life.
Read a different point of view at
http://www.padedoh.wordpress.com
My only concern is for the well being of our Chinese brothers in Kuala Trengganu.

Dear Readers,
I am trying to reach RPK and PAS leadership through various means, indirectly, because I don’t have their contact numbers. Those have their numbers, please convey this message.
I am from Kedah, voted for Pakatan in the recent GE. One of the issues that BN is telling Chinese voters in KT is “PAS will never respect other religious people, will never treat them fairly”.
The Pakatan leadership can put a stop to this. PAS promised Kedah Indians that it will declare Thaipusam as public holiday. So far there is no news. This is the best time to make the announcement. That would prove PAS managed to do something which BN did not do for past 51 years. This will put the final nail into UMNO coffin. This will create confidence to the Chinese voters in Kuala Terengganu, to vote for PAS.
Can someone past this message directly to PAS leadership, DSAI and RPK.
Thanking you in advance.

Wish I can be at KT to help somehow but could not..Bro.Haris and all others on the Pakatan side in KT…keep going guys..this is the time we are waiting for.. a vote for the moon ! …will certainly change the political landscape in KT and Malaysia on the whole..For far too long our parents and grand parents had put our trust on the BN regime whose ultimate target is to enrich themselves and their cronies, BN has lost its direction ,its a party of high profile robbers (.. and murderers ?)Every Ahmad ,Dollah and Muhammad in Umno wants a big piece of the pie..they are greedy and blind to all noble cause in fighting for the Rakyat. These bandits are busy accumulating their wealth ,that they have neglected to serve the people who have voted them in..this has been going on for the past 30 years..till now..where the Rakyat are waking up to stand against this greedy BN regime.
If we look hard enough..we would realise that we do not have hatred towards our friends from all races ,be it a Malay, Chinese,Indian ,Sabahan or other races in our everyday life or people we come across at the ground level..but due to the BN politicians who practice the divide and rule strategy, they have instill hatred among the races and provoke religion issues to stay in power, its as if without BN, Malaysian can’t live in Malaysia.!! These are the craps that the BN regime have drive into the mindset of the people in the rural area and urban area, though those in the urban area are well aware of the arrogant BN regime tactics now..compare to those days.. For the people of KT…please wake up ..before its too late!!, the BN regime is throwing money now because of the death of the BN MP ..which lead to this by-election..is this what we want? A by-election all the time to get the goodies which we deserved in the first place but denied by this useless, greedy BN regime..Its time to kick out BN and that powers now lies with the people, lets start with KT !!!.KT folks, the whole country is counting on you, please don’t let us down..!!! Vote for PAS !!..Vote for Pakatan and we may have a new government by the next 13th GE. GOD BLESS MALAYSIA !!! & GOD BLESS US ALL!!!

“Please vote for BN. A vote for the moon will change the world”.
Indeed the moon will change the world, more precise it will be at KT.
The BN mean Barisan Neutral. Not BanaNa that do not know how 2 do job and yet creating the confusion among the people.
