Just got a call from Sunny Lim, one of the 23 vigilers who are due to be charged in court in relation to the impromptu vigil on 9th November, 2008.
He got a call from ASP Hazlinda a little while ago to inform him that all the 23 will now be charged on Friday, 23rd January, 2009, at 9am, and not tomorrow as earlier indicated.
ASP Hazlinda informed Sunny that all the other 22 would also be informed by telephone.
I got the impression in my phone conversation with Sunny that there might be some confusion or uncertainty as to the matter of bail, so here goes.
For those being charged on Friday, please arrange to have someone who is prepared to stand as your bailor come along with you to court on Friday.
After the court has set the amount for bail, the court registry will issue a document which will detail your charge registration number, the particulars of your bailor, and the bail amount set by the court.
With that document, your bailor will have to head to the nearest bank, open a savings account and deposit the bail sum. The saving account book issued will then have to be handed over to the court registry.
To the rest of you out there, please make time to come to the PJ Magistrates Court on Friday, 23rd January, 2009, before 9am, to show solidarity and support for our 23 heroes.
A ‘help raise bail funds’ sms went out this morning. As you can see, cash will be needed to assist those being charged to make up their bail. Those of you who would like to help and are able to make it to court on Friday, please bring cash.

Dear Haris,
The police in Malaysia have become the worst enemy of public. Their acts only suggest that they are not slowing down at all. Their continuous harassment of ordinary Malaysians are simply too much to bear.
I read a heart wrenching news at Malaysia today about a 22 years old Kuhana a/l Ananthan who died in police custody. I have signed almost every memorandum you have produced in the past. This time I appeal to you to initiate another memorandum on police brutality in Malaysia. Could you please do something about this?
Usually I do not fall for racial issues but after seeing the photos I really feel like an average Indian who is extremely angry who could take retort to revenge.

Rasupal: if Kuhanna’s family needs any kind of support, please tell us in detail on Friday morning at the courthouse.
God help this nation.

Haris,
Re Rasupal’s plea above, can we all pls give it some thought?
The recent case of the detainee scalded with boiling water & the deaths of young men in police custody indicate that Indians, more than other races, are being victimized in this respect (abuse of authority).
It earlier crossed my mind: How about a Parliamentary caucus comprising MPs who have had experienced of being brutalized by police, such as Tian Chua, Tony Pua or been detained, like Dr Jeyakumar & Charles Santiago over the public campaigns Jerit & anti-war.
M’sians while shedding torrents of tears for Gaza do not feel at all their “heart wrenched” by what’s happening in our own backyard which we ought to do something about, rather than bleat & misinform the public on something happening at a great distance over which we have little influence.

Hi to the 23 anti-ISA supporters,
I think the police is on purpose to charge all of you on Friday and don’t be surprise they will delay so that all of you have no time to post bail and that will leads to remand till after CNY that is Wednesday!! So please please prepare,if possible with CASH!!!

Our police should wake up to the fact that they are under the obligation to protect law-abiding citizens. The flexing the muscles at the wimps and fancy of a certain party is uncalled for. It is a slap on Malaysia when we condemn the infringement of human rights in Gaza or in other countries but we allow this harassment to continue.

Helen, I was the first batch to attend the candlelight vigil and attended most of RPK’s court sessions. In his new article RPK suggested groups of 4-person vigils each week, and that each group let itself be arrested until the jails are full. I’m willing to be in those groups. That’s how much I care for my own backyard.
But I also shed “torrents of tears” at what’s happening in Gaza, and if you think I was misinformed and/or was misinforming others you’re invited to debate me at M-T or at any other venue of your choice. If you like we can even ask Steven Gan to let us do it at Malaysiakini where, like you did later, I used to write a features/opinions column.

Its blatant lie and ‘convenient’ twisted fact on this charges. Warning wasn’t given at all for the previous vigils, only on that faithful night. Even then, it was made at Amcorp while people were already despersing plus the arrest were made at (different location)PJ civil Hall without warning, whatsoever.
How is it then lawful to make an warning annoucement in one place and then arrest down in another place all together? There were people who happen to park their car at Civil hall coz of the blokade by the police as well. What is the rational?
Its getting more shameful of what our police can do to the rakyat. Its simply defy logics and what bully tactics it can employed. Shame to PDRM indeed.

The Judiciary has a most incovenient system for posting bail. Why is it the Courts cannot accept a cash bail and the amount deposited with the Registry? Why do bailors have to go through the tedious process of opening a savings account and depositing the book instead? Typical bureaucracy at the inconvenience of the public. Typically Malaysia. If the system is out-dated, change it. Do not let it grow algae like what Barisan had been doing.

The PDRM under IGP of Musa Hassan has been acted like Mafia and Legalise Gangsters “employed” by BN-UMNO to serve their agenda. I am speechless toward their ruthlessness, come with right opportunity as sooner as possible all these BN, IGP & AG will be toppled and barried at the bottomless pit.

According to an article in Malaysiakini today, there have apparently been 1,535 custodial deaths in the country between 2003 and 2007.
That is SHOCKING!
That is 307 deaths on average per year or approximately between 25 to 26 such deaths per month over the five-year stated period.
Something is almost certainly very amiss here with the custodial methods and interrogation tactics employed by the PDRM to question and gather evidence on suspected offences from those arrested and held in PDRM’s custody.
Remember that shameful and brutal assault committed by that ex-IGP Rahim Noor on Anwar Ibrahim in 1998?
So I too will support the call here for determined and focussed legal action to be taken by right-thinking aaBM on this further tragic, and for now, unexplained and mysterious death in police custody of another aaBM, who was a human being and not a mere number or police statistic.

I totally agree with Malsia1206 that the system to post bail be made more efficient and people-friendly. It is so tedious and time-consuming to have to open a savings a/c. Public Bank allows only 1 name a book but the police allows a bailor to bail 3 persons. The savings book also has to be in the name of the bailor. sheesh, it took forever yesterday cos it happened to be Friday and cops had long lunch till 2.45pm before we could proceed with the she-bang. Just use cash lah for goodness sake!
