‘Today, I received many phone calls from concerned friends who told me that the government is considering detaining me under the Internal Security Act ‘very soon’. If that does happen, then this could probably be the last article I write, at least until 16 September 2008. So I too need Anwar to succeed. If not I will be in Kamunting for quite some time to come and you will not hear from me over the next couple of years.
Yes, I too have placed, not only my money, but also my freedom on Anwar. And if Anwar fails to deliver his promise on 16 September 2008, not only he but I as well am headed for a fall. But I have confidence he will do it. And I have confidence that my stay in Kamunting will not be for two years but for a mere two weeks.
But if I am wrong…..well, then see you maybe in six or seven years time, because for sure Najib Tun Razak will not release me in 2010 when he becomes Prime Minister. What he would do, instead, would be to rollover my two-year detention another two years, and another two years, and another two years, until I am too old to think and write anymore.

Many of you freaked out after reading my ‘RPK in danger…’ post.
And many sighed a huge a sigh of relief after my ‘Access to RPK allowed’.
Well, if you read Marina Lee’s account of her meeting with RPK, you’ll know that we have every reason to still be concerned. More so, in fact.
That RPK is not eating appears to be clear.
Hunger strike?
Marina was quoted by Malaysiakini as first saying that RPK had lost weight and then added :
“He told me that he is not on a hunger strike. However, he did not tell me whether or not he is eating. I’m not sure what to make it of it…before he said he was not on a hunger strike but…”
Daughter Sara is quoted in the same Malaysiakini report as first saying that RPK had described food being served him as ‘pig food’ and then adding:
“He is in very bad shape. He looks very pale. We will be talking to the lawyers to see if we can do something about all this”
He can’t stand the food?
Or he has concerns about the safety of the food?
Lawyers have filed the habeas corpus application. That’s now fixed for hearing on 26th September. I understand that there will be an attempt to bring the hearing date forward, but we must still anticipate all sorts of delays creeping in.
Is there nothing else the rest of us can do? Just wait?
On 9th September, RPK wrote in ‘Hari Reformasi, the day of a new dawn’ :
‘…while Umno may not have the three million members it claims to have and while the military is not about to go on a rampage, we must not discount the possibility that certain irresponsible people who are frustrated that they are no longer in power may attempt to trigger race riots. And Anwar must guard against this. And if it is necessary to delay the takeover a couple more weeks or so just to ensure that these elements can be dealt with before they start their evil deeds then so be it. A delay of one month is no big deal if this can guarantee peace and stability.
This is all Malaysians ask from Anwar and nothing more than that. Guard against anything untoward happening. Only when the coast is clear should you make your move. There should be no bloodshed and loss of life. And ask the Malays in the opposition to come out in defence of their non-Malay brothers and sisters and warn the Umno Malays, in no uncertain terms, that they take to the streets at the risk of facing fellow Malays from the opposition who will defend their non-Malay brethren to the last drop of their blood. I, for one, am ready to stand by my Chinese and Indian comrades. So let Umno be warned.’

The detention, on 12th September of both
and
is, in my view, unique in the history of the use of the ISA by successive BN governments.
I say unique because, unlike earlier ISA detentions, that of RPK and Teresa was at the hands of a ‘government’ which, for all intents and purposes, was a ‘pretender’ to the throne. Pak Lah’s administration had, by the date of those detentions, lost all legitimacy to govern and to use the powers of state, including that under the ISA.
By that date, sufficient MPs had entered into accord to crossover to Pakatan so that Pak Lah no longer could legitimately claim to enjoy the confidence of the majority in Parliament.
Unfortunately, Pak Lah cannot be expected to do the decent thing and resign from office or to ask His Majesty to dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections.
And there is no reason to believe that Pak Lah’s administration will be in a hurry to release both RPK and Teresa. Or any of the other ISA detainees.
With Pakatan Rakyat, though, we are entitled to expect that they would release all ISA detainees upon taking over federal power.
At the Hari Malaysia celebrations on 15th September at Kelana Jaya, Anwar said that Pakatan Rakyat have more than the requisite numbers and that they’ve written to Pak Lah for a meeting to, amongst others, discuss a smooth and peaceful transition of power, and that when Pakatan takes over power at federal level, they will release all political detainees held under the ISA.
All these 20,000+ people heard it at Kelana Jaya on 15th September.
At the PKR press con yesterday, Anwar clarified that the letter despatched to Pak Lah also sought assurances from him that :
1) BN would not prevent BN MPs from acting in accordance with their conscience, constitutional rights and independent judgment;
2) the BN government would not invoke the Internal Security Act to detain any MPs who opt to join Pakatan Rakyat, or any of the present 82 Pakatan Rakyat MPs;
3) the BN government would not invoke emergency or police powers, or suspend the constitution, or dissolve parliament in response to Pakatan’s move to form a new federal government;
4) the BN government would not impose roadblocks and impede the MPs from gaining access to Parliament and the institutions of government.
Anwar further clarified that they would give Pak Lah some time to revert and if Pak Lah does not respond positively to this Pakatan overture, they would then take the matter to the Agong.
Malaysiakini reports that Pak Lah has responded to say that he would not meet Anwar.
“If he really has the list of MPs, he should just reveal it, and need not wait to meet me. He does not have the list. He is a liar”, Pak Lah is reported to have said.
Has not Pak Lah already spoken?
Should not Pakatan now take this matter to His Majesty without any further delay?
A Malaysiakini report today speculates on the possibility of Pak Lah’s regime moving to detain Anwar under the ISA.
This is based on Pak Lah saying that Anwar has ‘become a threat to the economy and possibly (national) security’.
On being asked what action he might take, Pak Lah is said to have replied:
‘I will not indicate what plan I will take, what I do will be in the best interests of the people and the country’
We all know that the biggest threat to our economy has been Pak Lah himself.
As for those who are a threat to national security, one need look no further than the UMNO leadership and their rank and file to identify these.
Add to this the arrest of Kickdefella this evening and what are we looking at?
Intimidation by a regime that no longer has the legitimate right to rule, in the hope that we will be silenced and bullied into inertia?
What do we do in the face of this?
What should Pakatan Rakyat do?

If it has not done so already, I think Pakatan Rakyat should, without any further delay, take this matter of Pak Lah’s loss of confidence of the majority in Parliament to the Agong.
The leadership of Pakatan Rakyat must impress upon His Majesty that the majority of the rakyat desire a change in governance, with the removal of PakLah and his BN regime and its replacement with a Pakatan Rakyat government under the leadership of Anwar.
What can we, the rakyat, do?

Hartal, from what I understand is a General Strike, while this would cripple the country for a day, would this not give the establishment one more reason to take action. While I agree with Zaid Ibrahim and most of the viewers of you blogs that something has to be done, I do not think anything that provides an excuse to the establishment should go on. They would go after those who suggested it, right now we have truth and morality on our side, let us continue to have these.

Hartal requires organisation. It would seem like the 20th October 1947 Hartal took some time to organise.
You might want to consider something that can be done quickly At not too much cost.
Pick a date and announce to all advertisers of MSM, they advertise on that date at their own cost. They could be identified for boycott, spamming, hacking of their web sites etc, etc, etc and a lot of inconvenience. Hogging of their telephone lines is another one. Simple and quick. And their business practices can become subject to close consumer and financial scrutiny. Now, the last one is the one they really don’t want.

It seems that the longer Pakatan and DSAI wait, the more the mess that they have to clear. The only reason we support this “take over” instead of a 4 – 5 year “wait, do and learn” is that the country will be in a bigger mess. Worse still, Pakatan and the Pakatan lead state governments would have been destablised and/ or weakened. See what has happened in the last 6 months. The longer we wait, the worse the mess that we would all have to suffer first and then sort out later. DSAI move. Get on with it. I believe you. I was so amazed that the Hartal of 1947 worked! thank you for alerting me to the documentary 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka. It was such an eye-opener that I emailed the link to everyone I knew. It’s the real history behind Merdeka.
I support the move to Hartal the ISA. Mahatma Gandhi paved the way for civil disobediance – without bloodshed & violence. He stood up against injustice. Can we not do the same?

Idea is good and I think a lot of people in their heart will support it but it’s not easy as communication is fragmented. It will require someone(s) with massive organization skills to enlist all bloggers, media, facebook, business owners, associations, NGO’s to create critical mass effect. Otherwise, hartal might go unnoticed. Just look at past campaigns such as wear yellow on saturdays etc. Must find out why it was not successful and not repeat the same mistakes.
As someone pointed out, it must not give BN a chance to impose emergency rule. But yet, it has to be something impactful.
Perhaps a publicity stunt like buy all BN crony related goods and gather it in one place and destroy it and invite foreign media to cover it! The easiest would be to buy all NST/Star/Utusan newspapers and burn it in a giant bonfire, but I’m afraid that it might contravene pollution laws.
I have a feeling the best way is to create a catchy e-mail in four languages saying “Just say No to ISA. If you agree, forward to 10 people” or something like that and make it a viral e-mail campaign to raise awareness.
Another suggestion is to create a human wall – perhaps stretching from Agung’s palace to KLCC, all linking arms. Can be done simultaneously in Penang, Ipoh, Melaka, JB, Kuching, KK. If done at night when people get off work and not so hot, they can also hold candles. Looks nice and send a clear message.

Dear Haris and blogger,
I am writing to you as a person (fellow malaysian) to another malaysian.
I don’t expect you to agreed, disagreed or even reply at all. But I do hope to have 5 minutes of your time to read this email, the rest is up to you.
We (as simple citizen) are appalled by the current economic and political situation of our country. Even more important what the future holds for our children and country. We will not be a bystander and let the event takes it own course. I believe that each individual person can make a different. Kudos to what the different Malaysian Bloggers have achieved so far.
I would like to believe that time is ripe for collaborative politic (back to basic) where power is at the hand of each individual and not government or political party. The traditional power pyramid will/have being inverse – where the bottom of the
pyramid yield sufficient power to lead the ‘top’ of the pyramid. This should be/is the essence of democracy.( however, the flaw of democracy is that it is never fair, because it assume we are all playing at a level playing field. which is not always the case….)
Anyway, today this era is made possible by technology (internet), a growing number of emancipated'(maturing mind and knowledge)’ of citizen and current desperate’ situation. This is marked by the growing group of blogger/activist.
However, as you know the challenge of such collaborative interaction is that each individual are free to do what they want/believe in. Hence, the challenge is to ‘focus’ or orient the different effort to ensure that the ‘majority’ is working together/toward ONE similar goal.
To cut it short, I believe the time is ripe to structure such effort to channel this ‘energy’ (reduce the waste of energy from each individual) to build the future of Malaysia. I believe we can do this by ‘creating’ a formal/informal group that do not have any political, race or religion biases with only ONE objective that is move the country forward. Where the support/legit is so important that it can influence the direction of the country (or any government or political party for that matter). This can be some sort of think tank or NGO(what ever make sense) where ideas, new policy, project are debated/voted/clarify – by the individual citizen (free from any hidden agenda, etc..).
The idea is to start this at a grass root level with the blogger community. I will send the same each to different active blogger.

I am not sure whether a hartal like that in the 1950s will work today. I think the situation in 1950s is very different. But protest against ISA we must.
Trying to think out of the box, those who are performing some service or selling something can just close down for a few days. For the others maybe we should work to rule or live to rule. Live to rule meaning, drive exactly at 80 kmph on a 80 kmph highway on the right lane for a few days. Imagine if thousands do this, real impact all over the country man. Everybody drives faster than that on the highway. But perhaps wear a sticker on your car about the Drive to Rule “Hartal” so that other know what you are doing. But once police car approaches, drive faster and then start the drive to rule again. I am sure many others can have more creative ways to hartal.
But most of all, DSAI has to move fast to see Agong.

Haris im all for Hartal, even though im soon leaving for overseas and wont be back for maybe 6months to a year. I want to do whatever i can to support the hartal.
I wish to point out that:
We will have to have massive mobilization to organise such a huge event in a VERY short time. Simply put, we HAVE to launch the hartal within say a week because things are getting worse and worse, and we dont know how long before soldiers start patrolling our streets. Meanwhile, RPK Teresa are rotting away at a time when they are needed the most, not to mention all the rest.
We would not only need to get the word out very quickly, but need to convince people to hartal and the need to do so. we also need to beware of unscrupulous ppl who would think they would be able to make an extra profit by opening shops when all competitors close.
We need to convice teachers, students parents, office directors to support the hartal and not take action against staff who do not show up for work, class, etc
Anyway, im all for this hartal no matter what. Id like to suggest the following:
1) Setting up of a committee ASAP to oversee the organization and implementation of the hartal. Obviously it should be helmed by high profield well known people such as youself Haris as well as other bloggers, civil activists, maybe lik kit siang etc.
This committe will be in charge of coordinating the hartal via various ground networks to disemnate the message, set a date(s) make the hartal publicly known so that when it happens people (esp BN) will know why.
This comittee should handle finances that will be required to launch the hartal, press confernces, banners etc.
2) Have everyone participating in the hartal hang the Jalur Gemilang upside-down outside their houses, offices etc to show the world that they are part of this hartal to protest against the state of the country’s affairs
3) Print and distribute leaflets, Hang up banners and posters regarding the impending hartal. Maybe distribute small banners saying “kedai/Pejabat ini mengambil bahagian dalam Hartal seluruh negara 2008” or something of the sort
Again the setting up of the committe is the most important. Perhaps set up a blog/website specifically regarding the hartal. Get volunteers to produce videos about the hartal and put them on youtube, metacafe, or even as a ad in TV
Good luck, and keep us informed (i know you will). Ill do what I can to help out wherever I am.

Could we take 1 step at a time, not too many issues which would only serve to dilute the effect and attention it receives? I believe hartals are usually over 1 major issue. I am not optimistic of trade union assistance given the master/slave relationship of unions to their political masters in UMNO. I hope I am wrong tho.

It’s 4am and i cant sleep.
Haris, Hartal by staying indoor is oke, but it’s another soft approach against the Pa La government. Anwar Ibrahim has already made a soft approach.
I suggest Anwar to proceed with a stronger approach, to seek an audience with HH Agong while all PR parliamentarian/MPS boycott every parliament sittings as we the rakyat do our indoor-hartal. But this can only succeed if Anwar DOES have the required number of cross-over MPs. Orelse the Pa La government will be spinning news that the whole country is in distress and fear and arrest Anwar and others under ISA to ensure nation stability and security.
Hence, the rakyat staying indoor and businesses shut can lead to two reasonings, one is the rakyat is in protest, second is they are in fear.
I suggest a stronger approach from Anwar, all PR parliamentarians and us, Malaysians.
I suggest we find out a day and time when HH Agong will be available. (Selangor Menteri Besar TS Khalid should be able to work this out.) And Anwar to announce since Pa La do not agree to a meeting for a smooth transition, that he will on that day and at that time approach HH Agong. And each and every rakyat that feels Malaysia needs to breakaway from BN rule, shall be there in mass accompanied by PR law makers. This, will show PR, Anwar and the Rakyat, share the same vision and mission!
And we can all wear yellow, since this is the very colour that have not only brought PKR, PAS and DAP together, but amongst the rakyat across all races who want to see change.
Hence, i suggest we end the BN chapter and bury them with another BIGGER and STRONGER YELLOW WAVE!
Just a thought though. But if there’s gonna be a yellow wave, i’ll certainly be part of it.

I have always advocated peaceful civil disobedience as executed by Gandhi with huge success against the almighty British Empire. You just let us know the game plan. I have already started calling relatives still in Malaysia and educating them of the situation. I am also prepared to donate financially as well as my time to assist in anyway (one of the small benefits of being “the boss”).
Being overseas, the above are the only things I can do for now. Calling the Malaysian High Commission is an absolute waste of time. They just give the standard “We note your concern and it shall be passed on to the appropriate authority for action”.
Let’s us know what to do. Let the Hartal begin. A successful single day hartal will definitely have an impact and send the message home. Will try to get our government here to exert some “international pressure”.

Rather than add to the comments I shall tell a story. It concerns the experiences of, I believe, Paul Brunton in India.
He had gone in search of a yogi at an ashram. As he entered the hut a cobra fell from thatch and confronted our seeker. The cobra raised itself to the striking position when a visiting yogi to the ashram entered the hut. The yogi went into a meditative pose and after a few moments, to Paul’s amazement, the cobra lowered it’s hood to the yogi who patted the snake which then glided away.
Why am I telling this story which I have accepted without reservation?
Malaysia, the land of my birth, is going through great challenges. A reading of the various blogs has indicated the anguish that is suffered and some solutions have been aired. I believe that it is possible to bring about a change through means suggested in the story above. That would be the evolved way. I would not say this if I had not put into practice what I advocate and seen the awesome results in my personal life.
Apparently there are about 20700 people who have put their signatures to a petition. Imagine the tremendous power that can be unleashed if all of them meditated on an agreed outcome at a given time. The beauty of the exercise is that it can be done from wherever each individual is.
Peace can only come through peaceful means.

When no one buys the shops has no business and when you don’t fill your tanks no sale of petrol. When lorries don’t run no transport of goods which means none can sell their produce. I have a suggestion Haris.
Why not do a simple experiment to test the water for the people’s interest/commitment level for a nationwide Hartal?
Some poster on this blog-site (sorry, can’t recall the poster’s name right now) suggested that people should honk their motor vehicle-horns to show their displeasure at the government.
That is actually imo, a simple and brilliant idea! It is also legal (at all times?) I believe.
Why not ask people to register their anger at the BN-Government and to indicate their readiness for the planned Hartal by honking their horns continuosly for say,fifteen to thirty seconds at designated times during the day/night and on designated days?
Then listen to the honking-decibel levels in each town on those set days and exact times to roughly gauge from the concerted honking noise, the potential and sustained commitment level from the people in those areas for open defiance/the Hartal.
I may be wrong of course, but I think this simple exercise may be able to give you a good indication of whether the planned nationwide Hartal will succeed or fail.

Hartal ISA makes no sense. Suppose there is hartal, the law will be repealed tomorrow or not use again? If Pakatan comes into being, the ISA is finished anyway and detainees are out.
Hartal ISA should be converted into a Hartal for a new government on a number of grounds. One, the signs are clear that Umno, with too much to lose, won’t cave in – and kickdafella is latest. Two, too much hopes are laid on the presumption that the King will (a) at best, concede to Pakatan’s demands or (b) at worse, call fresh elections because there’s now a hung parliament. Even with (a) or (b), the problem isn’t over. Seriously, will the administration just walk away and say thank for 50 good years? Suppose the answer is, yes (which is incredulous), the presumption needs backing and conviction, and Hartal for new government is that backing. Three, Abdullah now has defence. Read anyway you want into it but it is presumptuous that the army takes orders from sultans only. With Hartal there is nothing on the streets to guard against or empty forthwith.
Hartal for new government (versus the negative Hartal BN or Hartal ISA) is not a single strike but phased in. Start on the day of petition to King; start with the schools, then continue to Day Two. Day Two stop work, return your deposits into cash (know what that means?). Day Three close all shops and all offices. Day Four return to kampung day. Day Five shut down all transport. This phasing-in ought to follow a strategic, logical order – in particular Day Five – but allow for permutations in the Hartal. When to start? How to? Devil is in details.
Warning: there is no going back on this. It’s revolution. If the tentative idea is to stay indoors by PP readers, it won’t amount even to a pinprick. Not PP but Pakatan (and why not?) which has an organisation structure and administrative mechanism to pull it off meaningfully and effectively. Otherwise, everybody here is just for toying around.

I have been for HARTAL from the day it was suggested. I had already written my views about it on the very first day.
After reading Red Says’ comments, I feel a more structured approach where the planned HARTAL is conducted NOT on ONE day but on a few consecutive days would be more effective.
HARTAL to be effective and to send the required message, it must be planned meticulously. Every aspect must be looked into and the impementation must work flawlessly.

Haris, count me in as well but I’ve no internet access at home so I’ll have difficulty to follow up the plan unless I go to the cybercafe. I’ll email you my mobile number if the announcement is going to happen over the weekend.
Besides hartal, I still think that DSAI should act fast as we can’t afford any delay, if not, 920 episode 2 might just repeat itself.
I agreed with Abdul Aziz Bari’s article “The King needs to intervene”, instead the sooner the better. The King is now our last resort to stop those power abusers.

I just saw from the astro channel AL JAZEERA on the war on terror. Start a campaign and fly UMNO / BN flags upside down, UMNO/BN is in distress and it needs to know.
Use cheap/crappy material for the flags, any donor/sponsor willing to pay, then have them given away for FREE
In with lets keep our roads clean campaign, were you to come across any cows crossing the road and if they happen to drop something from the behind end, clean the road with UMNO/BN flag and aftewards fly it, the rain might wash it..
