This was one of Mum’s all time favourites.
___________________________________________
Mum was admitted into hospital on Wednesday.
Diagnosed as suffering heart failure, a heart infection and an infection of the lungs.
Thursday evening, doctors placed her on a respirator.
Friday evening, doctors advised that family members may wish to be present.
We camped in the ICU visitors lounge that night.
Saturday morning, round about 9.40am, my sister urgently called me into Mum’s ICU cubicle.
As I entered, both my sisters were feverishly praying.
I watched Mum.
She was slipping away.
I closed my eyes.
She took my hand.
Without a word, hand in hand, we walked out into a seemingly endless open field, bright and sunny, and raining.
We seemed to walk forever.
And Mum was filled with joy.
Almost child-like, wondrously looking around as if seeing everything for the first time.
Then, suddenly, we had reached the end.
“Go in peace, Ma”, I said softly.
“God always be with you, son”, she said.
The doctor walked in and felt for life.
“She’s gone”.

“…and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, “We are Christians”: because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant” – Surah 5 verse 82 of the Holy Qur’an.
Mum was born Christian, lived a Christian and died a Christian.
Sure, she partook of all all the Muslim festivities that were celebrated at home as we grew up.
That’s because she loved my father.
And not once did she ever try to draw me into her faith.
Probably, because she believed in her heart that God availed Himself to all.
Did not matter what you wore on your sleeve. What was in the heart and how what was in the heart manifested itself was what mattered.
Suspect I got that from Mum.
And from all that I’ve come to know of the Christian faith, trying as I have to discern the Gospel of Jesus from the Bible, I know that Jesus would be well-pleased with Mum.
My brothers, my sisters, and I, together with relatives and friends, laid Mum to rest as we believed she would have wanted.
As she was in life, a Christian, modestly, and with love in abundance.

Angelina Williams wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. She and your dad would look after you 6 much more than they did on earth so you behave ok?
Your mother would must have joined us during the National Union of Teachers strike in 1967 because her cousin Mrs Bhupalan, courageously did, even as a headmistress. I promised her at her casket that I would continue our Sunday vigil. I will do it with A N Other….just the two of us as that will not constitute an illegal gathering. So I asked her to be with us, as the invisible FORCE. I know she will be with me and A N Other.

I read about her passing earlier but refrained from talking about it in order to give you time to grieve. What a great mom, and what a wonderful son she had in you. I’m glad my judgement of character was correct the moment we shook hands at the Amcorp Mall vigil – not a difficult process, really, when it involves recognizing someone with Godly upbringing.

Dear Bro’ Haris,
The whole of last week must have been the most painful for you and family. I know how much you all loved her, especially you. I also know that you always visit her after every vigil and I always considered that to be a very noble act right after performing another admirable noble act with us vigilers. May God Bless Her Soul and Give You and Family the Strength to come to terms with your overwhelming grief. Take care, Bro.

when my MAMA left,
my world tumbled; i was devastated.
I am truely sorry,HARIS ;be strong.
my deepest, heartfelt condolences to HARIS n family.
It is good of your family to respect your mom’s religion n she yours,
See,
you can all live with different religions in ONE family,
why can’t we Malaysians with different religions live in ONE big HARMONIOUS country ?
SURELY,ANAK-ANAK BANGSA MALAYSIA Boleh !!!
My MAMA gave her children the FREEDOM to religion.
so,i am sort a Taoist at times,a Budhist at others.
but most of the time i am a free thinker who enjoys all the festivities such as GongXi-Deepa-Raya n Christmas.
i always feel a bit lost when made to fill “religion” in forms
i am not an atheist,i believe in GOD n i respect all forms of religion
JUST that,if i don’t fill in that space,in Malaysia some crazy ppl might decide that i must b of certain religion n claim whatever “on my behalf”!
Anyway, may God bless your mom’s soul.
Best wishes to HARIS n family !

In death we go
To our Lord of many names
He waits for His children
Knowing they have learned
The many experiences they will enrich
Walking home to His Kingdom
Death is just part of the design
Feel the process; the preparation for the next
Where living will be tested on the divine laws
Before we are sent to hell and heavens
We all die
This is absolute fact
For wages of sin is death
We can’t escape it
In this world
We learn to look at paradise
Living it breathing it too
The wrong ways the evil ways
In this world we will learn plenty
It is the small part playing
Each living soul gives away
Enriching a soul accomplishing plenty
For it is all these small parts gel together
For the easy flow into the phrase of life
Allah’s Home we wish to stay…………
Saudara Haris
Word fail me to say
Only my condolences
To you and your family members

It is clear from this posting that you and your mother were good friends too, and that is an added bonus that not many get to experience.
And perhaps your mother, being a follower of Jesus Christ, also knew the simple secret that the charming little fox in the Little Prince knew, which is that one sees clearly only with the heart, as anything essential is invisible to the eyes.

Dear Sir, our deepest condolences.
Be Still, My Soul
1. Be still, my soul:
the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently
the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God
to order and provide;
In every change,
He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul:
thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways
leads to a joyful end.
2. Be still, my soul:
thy God doth undertake
To guide the future,
as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence
let nothing shake;
All now mysterious
shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul:
the waves and winds
still know His voice
Who ruled them
while He dwelt below.
3. Be still, my soul:
when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened
in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know
His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe
thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul:
thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness
all He takes away.
4. Be still, my soul:
the hour is hastening on
When we shall be
forever with the Lord.
When disappointment,
grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot,
love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul:
when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed
we shall meet at last.
5. Be still, my soul:
begin the song of praise
On earth, believing,
to thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him
in all thy works and ways,
So shall He view
thee with a well-pleased eye.
Be still, my soul:
the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds
shall but more brightly shine.

Bro,
Your mother is definitely proud of what you are doing now after enduring (what must have been) plenty of anxious moments in the old school days, many many moons ago.
I believe she is at peace, so grieve not, my friend, for she is at a better place.
Life goes on but she will always be in your heart.

Bro, no wonder I had the strangest connection with her as I shook her hand and look into her eyes at the 1st Bangsa Malaysia gathering. It was a little brother looking in awe at a sister in Christ for the wonderful gift she bore to Malaysians.
My family and I wish to extend our deepest condolence to you and your family as you mourn her passing. Her graciousness and blessing to others will be remembered through you as you carry on all that she believed in. May God shower his peace and mercy on you as you rejoice in knowing she is now with Him in heaven in peace until we meet again in our eternal life. Amen.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.
Your mother sounds a wonderful person. So much ahead of her time, in her ability to bring up the kind of children that you and your brothers and sisters are. Your father must have been/or is equally inspiring.
I especially liked the excerpt from the Surah. Thank you.

My condolences, Haris.
Some folks make a big name for themselves in their lifetimes. Many others try but fail, and of these, some become imposters, trying with even the foulest means to force others to respect and honour them, alast in vain.
There are also many who apparently performed no great notable deeds in their lifetimes. But their children, nutured and brought up by them with care, love and great devotion, are giants who lead and serve mankind.
I have not met your mother nor do I know much about her beyond the few bits you included here and there on your blog.
But looking at her son, I think there is enough reason to count her as a giant herself.

It appears that your mother was a good Christian and brought you up to be a good Muslim who respects and honors other faiths. It takes a spiritual giant to do that. She had a universal spirit, and through you, her legacy of universality and unity lives on. Take care, commrade.

Dear Brother Haris,
I just read your eulogy on your mum’s demise and I am moved to tears. God created a masterpiece in your mother.
Being a Sabahan, I could’nt help thinking that your family could have been either Sabahans or Sarawakians, as we NEVER had this hangup about religion at all, save after the entry of a political entity from the west!!
I know that your beloved mother is now in heaven with the Lord for the wonderful deeds she has done raising her children here on earth.
