I was too young to fully understand all that was happening when the May 13 tragedy struck.
I have since had the benefit of reading up on this dark passage of our nation’s history from every possible literature I could lay my hands on, including Dr. Kua’s “May 13”.
Until an earnest attempt to lay bare the truth about the riots of 1969 is made through a mechanism akin to that of a truth and reconciliation commission, we may never really ever know what brought about the violence and mayhem which , as we now know, made all talk thereafter of nation-building, as envisaged by our founding fathers, rhetoric and little else.
At the same time, the race-based ‘divide and rule’ blueprint laid out by the Malay nationalists of the day and carried forward by their progeny to this day has, over the years, been allowed to take root and firmly grip this nation by, again and again, playing out to a fearful people, the spectre of race and religion-based violence erupting to disrupt a peaceful existence sustained, not through genuine respect, acceptance and understanding, but the absence of dissent through fear.
Again and again, the people are reminded of the dark history of May 13.
Take the script of May 13. Tweak it a little.
New actors.
Present-day props.
The stage is set.
Act One : Racial posturing by one group
Act Two : Retaliation by another group
Act Three : Media reports of volatile racial tension
Act Four : Police threat to take the necessary action to restore calm
Act Five : Pre-emptive strike by the powers that be to arrest the ‘trouble makers’ and detain the same under preventive detention laws ( read this as ISA ). Strangely, the actors in Act 1 and Act 2 escape the net that has been cast far and wide
No need for real bloodshed. Creating public fear of the same would have the same desired effect.
Take the Najib-Lee Kim Sai sandiwara of 1987, that was the prelude to Ops Lalang.
Racial posturing, leading to racial tension, and then mass arrests.
The net cast wide, so that the real targets of detention are not immediately discernible, in the context of media-reported racial tension, in the hope that a fearful people will not retaliate to these arrests.
The main players?
Scot-free. Job well done.
Glean through the history of this nation and one will find that every time the Malay nationalists in UMNO have found themselves politically weak and up against the wall, they have resorted to the script of May 13.
Times have changed, though.
The mainstream media no longer has a monopoly over the dissemination of information to the people.
We are a better informed people now.
Post the Hindraf rally of 25th November, 2007, the ultras in UMNO planned a rally on 19th December.
It was called off.
They were advised that the components of that planned rally would be largely mercenary Mat Rempit and Perkida. Should there be a retaliatory gathering on the same day by those marginalised Malaysians who had protested earlier on 25th November, and should these two groups clash, there would be a bloodbath. Within minutes, sms’s would carry news of the same throughout the country.
The nation would be in flames.
That the ultras in UMNO then called off the rally tells us that they too, then, could not afford a nation in flames.
The economy would be in ruins. There would be no riches to pilfer in the guise of governance.
What they then did was, through the mainstream media, to contrive fear of racial tension.
Every other day, in that December of 2007, the IGP was quoted asking people not to be influenced by e-mails and sms’s warning of trouble looming in the country.
That was enough.
It worked.
Every other day that month, I received sms’s asking me to take care as I travelled in the course of my work, social activism or otherwise.
Looking back now, it would seem that that ploy was too little, too late.
The results of the 12th GE bears testimony to this.
The rakyat were not taken in to vote for stability. Half of those voting voted for change.
Has UMNO since abandoned the script of May 13?
No.
Since Najib launched his 1Malaysia, it’s become difficult for UMNO to openly play the race / religious ‘divide and rule’ card.
Not that they don’t anymore, but it has become difficult.
It’s a credibility issue, so the PR boys have advised.
Play the race and religion card by all means, so the advise goes, but distance UMNO from this.
Do it surreptitiously.
Enter the many NGOs that leave a trail leading back to UMNO, that have sprung up to do the dirty work of stirring alarmist race and religious sentiments amongst our Malay / Muslim brothers and sisters.
Read this to include PERKASA, PEWARIS and Pekida and any other NGO in any way howsoever connected to Ibrahim Ali or Dr M.
Add to this the vile and dangerous rantings of the likes of Zul Nordin and Hassan Ali.
These are the new actors to the drama, founded on the script of May 13, that we see being played out today.
Aided and abetted by the mainstream media and the numerous blogs and websites that serve the racist agenda of UMNO.
Utusan, Berita Harian, NST, The Star, and all the state and UMNO-owned TV and radio stations.
Must I name the bloggers?
We all know who they are.
The history books of this nation may some day record their names, and their deeds, for posterity. Time will tell.
So the script of the new drama unfolding before us and carried out to the Malay heartland by the media is largely the same.
The May 13 script, tweaked to suit present circumstances and needs.
The actors are new.
What of the props and the modus?
Remember the cow-head incident in Shah Alam in August, last year?
How the perpetrators of that shameful act claimed to be PAS members and finally, most, if not all, turned out to be UMNO members or UMNO-connected?
Things, however, didn’t go as they had hoped.
Why?
Our Hindu brothers and sisters did not fall into the trap of the evil perpetrators of that most ugly deed by reacting with any retaliatory move, thereby unwittingly setting the stage for Acts 3, 4 and 5.
Back to the drawing board.
Solution : If the good people of this nation will not retaliate to staged provocation, stage the retaliation as well.
If the Hindus will not retaliate to cow-head stomping and the Christians will not react to church-torching by desecrating Muslim places of worship, do it on their behalf.
And then let the UMNO-subservient media do their work to get word of this staged retaliation to the unsuspecting Malays in the heartlands who have no access to alternative news.
Consider the seeming tit-for-tat church burnings and desecration of mosques and surau that we are witnessing.
The intended demonstrations on 8th January after Friday prayers against the the High Court decision in the “Allah” issue fizzled out.
The church burnings of the same day drew outright condemnation from civil society, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.
And little else.
What of the desecration of surau and mosques that followed?
I have no doubt in my mind that these, like the church burnings and the attack on the gurdwara, were staged by UMNO and their thugs.
In the midst of all this comes the announcement of the use of the ISA to detain those alleged to be involved with international terrorism.
Is Act five looming?
Let’s wait and see.
Let’s also say it like it is.
The two biggest enemies of peace, justice and equality in this our nation, are UMNO and their controlled media.
Both are dying a slow death.
If in December of 2007, UMNO appeared to still want to avert any real bloodbath, increasingly now, they do not seem to care.
Or it may be that UMNO now is so fractured and like the days of Pak Lah, the leadership today is unable to reign in the warlords.
Whichever, UMNO has unleashed its agenda of terror.
What of the rest of the nation?
More than ever before, we need to be united to face these enemies from within.
We must not backslide and lose the little ground we have gained over the last few years.
We must all do what we can to neutralise the impact and effect of the lies being spun by the UMNO-subservient media on those who do not have access to the alternative news.
And should mass detention ala Ops Lalang come to pass, we must be ready to step forward to offer leadership in place of those who may be taken in.
What we must not do is to react and give them the stage that their desperate plan requires.
We must counter the message of hate being churned out by UMNO and its media with acts of love, kindness and understanding.
This is our collective responsibility.
If we respond to our enemies agenda with calm and cunning, by God’s Will, we shall soon bury them.
What is the message that we must send to UMNO?
DO NOT MISCONSTRUE OR ACTS OF LOVE, KINDNESS AND UNDERSTANDING TO BE BORNE OUT OF FEAR.
WE DO NOT COUNTENANCE YOUR WAYS AND WE DO NOT FEAR YOU, UMNO.

The only people who fear UMNO are those business people whose business and wealth is so marginal that they cannot withstand instability of any sort. For the vast majority, whatever the instability and whoever caused it, its basically UMNO/BN fault and they know it even the hardcore UMNOist who will deny it to their death.
There is no game to be played anymore for UMNO/BN. That is what Najib don’t understand and the problem. Which means there is no game to be played but a question of stamina. Who can outlast? Those who have not been part of UMNO/BN which is the majority of us are better suited to outlast them because we have been gaining stronger over the years while they grew soft and weak. We are stronger, THEY have more resources. But they waste resources faster than we will ever grow weaker. So they must make us weak, hit very very hard and sink lower and lower in depravaty.
We live in historic pivotal moment that are a measure what the word ‘Malaysian’ mean. We have the opportunity to define ourselves never before and not likely ever again. Every Malaysian must ask – are they people of character or are they pathetics serfs? End UMNO/BN rule and the word ‘Malaysian’ will mean one of self-pride and character. Fail to do it and it will shame carried also by future generation we are pathetic..

it isn’t difficult to read Muhyiddin’s intention:
“I don’t want to accuse anyone of perpetrating the incidents; like the surau-burning case in Muar, it turned out that those involved are not non-Muslims. So we don’t want to make any accusation.”
Note how he is telling the Malays that Non-Muslims are attacking suraus and mosques. He wrapped that up with “I dont want to accuse”, front and back!

What an insult to my intelligence.

I have to correct this: The DPM said that ‘it turned out that those involved are NOT non-muslim’
Therefore, he could not have been telling the Malays that Non-Muslims are attacking suraus etc..
Let’s read things a bit more carefully and not stoke fires further.

Optimuz, the phrasing by the jackass from Muar was very peculiar. 1st glance it seems that he was saying that it was done by non-moslems. Clearly he could say that the perpertrators were Moslem. (simple & clear).
Yet this is inline with his other comment that Christians from Sabah & Sarawak say that they do not want to use the word that they have historically used to call God in their language anymore.
Please understand, as my mother’s family comes from Muar I have some knowledge that you do not have about this very dangerous chap, but if you ask people about this particular chap, they will have many stories to share. None good.
We need to protect and cover our Prime Minister. He is being threatened from multiple fronts. Stand up and tell UMNO, we hate TDM’s and that bloody Indon’s (Syed Hamid Albar’s) legacy. We want the Tengku, Tun Ismail and Tun Razak’s legacy. Remember Tun Razak stood for Malay honor and for a SECULAR country. He was a Bugis, a proud warrior clan and his Buku Hijau was timely. It was that long-serving Indian Prime Minister who introduced religion into this cauldron, please check out Art Harun’s very interesting comment on U-tube about Article 3. Most of the mess we are in right now is attributable to that Indian chap from Kerala. But we have to forgive that chap, he is getting senile these days.
Have you seen the sequel to Avatar. George Bush climbs into one of those machines and becomes an Avatar. He hijacks the “giant” Airbus plane, and flies it into the US Congress during a State of the Union address when all the Senate, Congressmen, Supreme Court justices and leaders of the Fed and the Cabinet are at attendance. He crashes the plane, and our former PM was in the vicinity and he starts recording the site. He states that no plane was seen, and it was probably C4 stolen from a Malaysian air-force base at the same time as the engines were stolen. Two Malaysian Pendatang’s of Indian origin were seen carrying the C4 out of the base and sending it by Pos Laju to the US.
Its a great story from that outstanding Malaysian who makes Sri Lanka’s President and the Army Chief look like Sentul gangsters.
Long Live Malaysia.

Harris,
Yes, we must show love and kindness.
This blessed nation Malaysia, needs to free from the ” chain ” of UM NO. Come GE 13, the citizens of Malaysia must rise to make a new society and community , just, fair and transparent for our future generations. This is a blessed nation let us not BN to spoilt it all for us.Malaysia has slided down badly economically, social justice, education, etc, only the citizens who love this blessed nation can halt the sliding.
The non-muslims brothers and sisters had spoken in GE 12.
We need our muslim brothers and sisters to win GE 13 for PR. Non-muslims brothers and sisters, need some brother like yourself to lead us to show love and kindness to hundreds of thousands muslim brother and sisters in hundreds of kampongs all over Malaysia to know the truth.
One idea, let us organised ” gotong royong ” projects in kampongs all over the country,on a voluntary basis.Put it on the net asking for volunteers. Surely, there must be something we can do for kampong folks, all the paciks, maciks, adeks and kakaks.
Please set up a National Co-ordinating Secretariat for this project. Please have this body non-political party and non-religion aligned.Let all the Chinese, Indians, Malays, Punjabi, Eurasians, etc of all faiths come together. Many of us will be willing to sacrifice , one Saturday and Sunday a month even camp out to do something for the kampong folks.
Many city folks will also bring their children for such activity. What a better way to foster love and kindness and understanding.
Let us built ” Bridges ” to the kampong folks and all races.
In Japan if LDP for decades had ruled Japan can be defeated in the Poll, surely Malaysians can effect a change.
Please all fellow citizens, who read this blog, come out

should we prepare for proactive strategy such as getting ready to hartal (at least 2 days , in case msg can’t filter thru effectively,if internet is blocked), the moment certain events happens, such as any arrest of our elected reps ?
hartal is a very effective form of protest n clashes or violence may b avoided.

To give in to the fear campaign deliberately and consistantly engineered by UMNO and its leaders, is to lose faith in our own strengths and in our own selves.
We the Ra’ayat are showing a special kind of strength,at the moment, we are able to resist EVERY tactic used to cause the present unrest. The perpetraitors are losing out. Their bag of tricks is getting empty.
That strength comes from our multi-faceted character, which has earned us such a good name over the years. Therein lies our collective power. As opposed to the stale one-sidedness of our present leaders.
Because our hopes for this country, which we all love and so strongly defend and understand, is what is helping us…to laugh out loud, at the moment, istead of cowering to threats.
We are not going to allow fear to foil our dreams, for change, we are not going to allow fear to make traitors of ourselves.
As Malaysians we are constantly aware, that freedom from fear is also one of our precious freedoms.

There is a lot of talk about a change of government but very little about a change of mentality. It is unrealistic and naive to expect that an overhaul of a political system can accomplish anything without the same overhaul taking place within our minds.
If we want to criticise the government for its race based policies, it is only fair we also criticise our own race based mentality. To point the finger only one way is sheer hypocrisy. We have ALL contributed to the rot in some way – with our way of thinking, our actions, our words, our inactions, our apathy. None of us can claim to be innocent.
How many of us see ourselves as Malaysians first followed by our ethnicity? I think we all know the answer is not many. How many of us hold on to age old stereotypes i.e. Malays are lazy & stupid, Indians are untrustworthy & violent, Chinese are greedy & selfish? I think we all know the answer is quite a lot. How many of us then are willing to (to quote the late Michael Jackson) ‘start with the man in the mirror and ask him to change his ways’?
Just as the government is guilty of playing us against each other, we are also guilty of playing ourselves up against each other. If Malaysia is to have any chance of a better future, we MUST change our mindsets. The old way of ‘every race for itself’ is NOT going to work. We need to see ourselves and each other as MALAYSIANS first and everything else a distant second. Then and only then will the wheels of change begin to turn. Until then we will remain stuck in the pit of quicksand that is the past, sinking lower with each passing minute.
There is still some hope left but my fellow Malaysians (yes, MALAYSIANS not Indians, Chinese, Malays or dan lain-lain), voting is just the tip of the iceberg. In the same way we’re all gung ho about getting people to vote, we need to get them (ourselves included) to think or rather re – think. The real change starts much sooner. In fact it starts right now.

I would like to fast forward to 2025. What will Malaysia look like. Now fast backwards to 9100. We had the Rio Sultanate ( Johore and Singapore). There was the Federated Malay State, then there was the States along the border with Thailand sending gold to the King of Thailand. Then you also had Penang and Province Welessly. That is what Malaysia will look like if we are not careful and do not get into the habit of providing good governance fre of the human curse of curruption. When you have internal troubles the countries that have vested interest in your country will all make a pitch to influence the way you govern. Then slowly as the situation goes down hill the US will send an aircraft carrier to the Straits of Malacca. Then the UN will find a way to come in. The thin end of the wedge will be the Aid Agencies of the UN. Then the Secretary General who hails from a country that cannot even govern itself will tell you what to do.
The the real battle will begin. The Rio Sulatane will declare independence. The Federated Malay States will appoint their own Ambassadors and Thailand will be roaming the northern states. Penang and PW will be fighting for Independence supported by a major power in the Security Council.
I pray to my God that He will give my leaders the wisdom to do at the beginning what they will be forced to do in the end unsuccessfully.

I confess I fear UMNO. During May 13th when the drums rolled I feared for my life, luckily the police intervened and we were saved. When the keris was threatened, i feared too. I feared so many times in my life and wanted to migrate, but somehow the roots remained strong.
I still fear them today when they unleash their demonic powers. When they play with racial and religious issues for their political survival. But I hate them more than i fear them and will stand my ground together with my family to exercise our voting powers to bring them to extinction if possible. May Allah deliver this nation from the grip of darkness!!

It is a refreshing thought and one that gives not just hope but a certainty, that the Ra’ayat is winning….
The country is being made a laughing stock and who is the Perpetrator, not the Ra’ayat, but UMNO and its Executor….the BN government.
Yesterday, the BN government again fed us with meat to have a loud laugh and to think sadly that Malaysia’s name is once again, being ridiculed, dragged down into the dumps, in the world arena.
It is not the Ra’ayat that are guilty of such reckless acts, it is not the Ra’ayat that has tickled the world’s fancy once again, but the BN government itself. Again in a shameless and foolish act.
Which spells of desperation.
Five supposedly good men who have it as their sworn duty to pronounce the final right judgement, according to facts, who are named Judges..because they are supposed to mete out the best and highest of judgements, unassailable judgements, fell shamelessly and lost all their reasoning power.
And dignity.
They fell in the act, from their moral duty to God and man, to descend to the level of untutored run off the mill, soul-less, indifferent so and sos.
How can we possibly fear the tutor called UMNO?
We, the Ra’ayat, are getting stronger, they are feeding us with the right kind of meat to flounce them at the next GE.
