Fine example Haris, on your part for having taken the trouble to walk and talk with the marchers, how happy you made them feel for their grand effort….
to give them the support they need at the Dataran tomorrow
What better incentive….for us,than copying your example, to be present tomorrow to cheer and support them, at the Dataran at 4 pm..
May we all get the strength and courage to be there.
Many thanks……for being the person you are ……. change bringer extraordinaire, in spite of your health, in spite of your committments.

This takes me back, 25 years to be exact. Rare Earth Sdn Bhd. I presented a paper on its’ activities and the consequences/effect on mother nature. When rare earth was put to sleep years later, a sense of relief was felt though not completely. Radiactive substance which was dumped at Titiwangsa Range is still there and it will still be there for next 10 generations.
Never thought this ghost from the past will revisit me. This ghost called Lynas, is now haunting me again. The question is, does Lynas contribution to our ecomony so vital that the government sees it fit to the extend of putting our safety on the line? Without this investment, will this country’s economy take a downward spiral?
We have well diversified economy and the government can always promote those sectors. So why on something has that failed once (ruined our mother nature) being revisited.
Policy makers have rare qualities indeed.

From Wikipedia:
“The Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has been built near Kuantan, Malaysia. This location was chosen due to the site allegedly having all the resources required to run the plant AT A LOWER COST THAN ORIGINALLY APPROVED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. In addition, the Malaysian government granted the company “pioneer” status and OFFERED IT A 12-YEAR TAX EXEMPTION. The LAMP is scheduled to commence operations in 2012. The LAMP has attracted significant local opposition, and the whole approval process looks to have become politicised. Lynas indicates that by early 2013, it will be able TO SUPPLY 22,000 TONS OF RARE EARTH CONCENTRATES PER ANNUM.
An Australian Greens MP, Robin Chapple, has shot down Lynas Corp’s attempt to ship radioactive waste from Malaysia back to Western Australia state saying that the WESTERN AUSTRALIA NUCLEAR WASTE STORAGE (PROHiBITION) ACT 1999 FORBIDS THE IMPORT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE.
On Sept 5, 2012, it was reported that Lynas (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was awarded the temporary operating licence by Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board for a period of two years. THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WAS NOT CONSULTED. The Lamp plant has been fraught with difficulty and it has generated strong opposition from Malaysians, unwilling to be the recipients of Australia’s wastes. The local residents have consistently protested the plant in various gatherings of up to 15,000 people. DESPITE THE WIDESPREAD CONCERNS ABOUT THE PLANT AND ITS LACK OF A PROPER LONG TERM DISPOSAL PLAN FOR ITS RADIOACTIVE WASTES, A TWO-YEAR TEMPORARY LICENCE HAS BEEN ISSUED. The approval seems like the sanctioning of an Australian mining company, ALLOWING IT TO MAKE USE OF LAX ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS AND GOVERNANCE ARRANGEMENTS IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY.
In September 2012, two members of the Western Australian Greens on the Legislative Council joined together with the large number of Malaysians who oppose the imminent shipment of radioactive ore from Mount Weld in Australia, to be processed at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan. The ores are to be shipped through the Fremantle Port, where 22,000 tonnes may pass through the city, the alleged transportation arrangement was planned WITHOUT ANY CONSULTATION WITH THE FREMANTLE COMMUNITY.”
UMNO/BN and its wholesale unaccountability is once again dumping its own, as well as other peoples’ unwanted, garbage on Malaysians and taking unacceptable risks with Malaysian lives for years to come without any consultation whatsoever with the people who are affected by those unaccountable government decisions.
Does Malaysia really need these types of proven high-risk detrimental FDI from the likes of iffy investors like Lynas when Malaysia can easily attract proven low-risk beneficial FDI from the likes of clean high-tech investors like Dyson, Microsoft, etc.?
So, I take my hat off to these brave protestors and I hope they will succeed in booting out an opportunistic profit-only oriented Lynas from Malaysia and also in voting out their clearly unaccountable UMNO/BN government. Perhaps the protestors can join-up with the Fremantle community to stop the shipments from being sent to Malaysia from there.
