Ibrahim Abu Shah

‘Abolish meritocracy in education and return justice to Malay students. This was the proposal by Malay Consultative Council president Ibrahim Abu Shah at a forum.

“Today, meritocracy has created Chinese supremacy. There is nothing to benefit Malay students.”

Ibrahim was quoted as saying this as a panel speaker at the ‘Malay and Bumiputra Education Convention’ organised by Yayasan Pelajaran Mara, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung on Saturday.’

Ibrahim, you condemn meritocracy because you say it creates Chinese supremacy.

Is it the fault of the Chinese then if they excel?

Are you, by having said that with meritocracy there is nothing to benefit the Malays, therefore saying that the Malays are incapable of excelling?

If so, please speak for yourself and not on behalf of Malays generally.

You were once the deputy Chancellor of UITM. If you say that the Malays there were incapable of excelling, it actually reflects badly on you and your time at UITM.

How do you imagine that the Chinese are able to excel?

Surely there is no other way than by working hard and working smart.

It appears you were incapable of getting your sudents at UITM to be so.

You failed them, did you not?

So like the rest of the BN-Government you seek a quick and easy solution. Never mind if the Chinese may be the more deserving. Just keep most of them out.

Let the less-deserving get in instead.

And you think that will help the Malays do better in life?

By being rewarded at the expense of others who may be more deserving?

You think that will improve their competitiveness in the global world?

Or are they merely to remain ‘jaguh kampong’?

Rather than encouraging and motivating the Malays to work hard so they can catch up, you choose the easy way, which really is to cheat on standards.

No wonder our educational standards stink and the international ranking of our institutions keep falling.

And you dare mention ‘justice’?

What justice are you talking about?

Do you even understand what justice is?

Justice to you is to reward the less deserving on the basis of the colour of skin? How perverse is that?

Are you nuts?

Do you even understand Islam and its abhorrence for racial discrimination?

Did you forget:

“O you who believe!  Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even if it be against yourselves, your parents, and your relatives, or whether it is against the rich or the poor…” (Quran 4:135)

“Let not the hatred of a people swerve you away from justice.  Be just, for this is closest to righteousness…” (Quran 5:8)

You are prepared to meet your Maker with your attitude?

What ails you so?
