Position and wealth

Malaysiakini reports that Wanita Umno head Shahrizat Abdul Jalil wants the party and government to give more roles to women either in government or government-linked companies (GLCs) and state Umno liaison committee, and also projects.

“Aren’t women qualified to hold post as directors or chairpersons in GLCs?” she asked, to applause from delegates at the Wanita UMNO assembly. Quite apparently with patronage being the name of the game in UMNO, she was seeking to bolster her own position in the Wanita wing by hoping to be in a position to dish out largesse to the delegates.

In the midst of rising prices of food and necessities, is that all that this woman can think of? Grabbing positions and projects! In the face of escalation of crimes and social ills and declining educational standards, is that all that she had to speak of?

Is politics merely to jostle for position and wealth whilst service to the community is secondary, if at all it is of any importance?

Remember Shahrizat, position and wealth is given by the Almighty and you will in due time be questioned over what you did with the positions and wealth He afforded you. Remember too that positions of public office are a trust to which you will be answerable.  Holding such office carries with it a moral responsibility and duty to serve the public with integrity and honesty and to promote the public good, not to seek gain for oneself. Failure to discharge such duty only brings dishonour to oneself.

Surah At-Takathur, Al Qur’an

“Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you

Until ye come to the graves.

Nay, but ye will come to know!

Nay, but ye will come to know!

Nay, would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge!

For ye will behold hell-fire.

Aye, ye will behold it with sure vision.

Then, on that day, ye will be asked concerning pleasure.”

So go on then and enjoy yourself, Shahrizat, but remember that the time to stand before your Maker and account for all that you did is, for sure, not far off.
