I’ve known her and worked with her since the first Bersih rally in 2007.
Yes, I speak of Maria.
Over the years, we have not always seen eye to eye on everything, but ask those in activism and they will tell you that this is perfectly normal.
Ask those same people and they will readily agree with me that Maria has tirelessly worked and been in the forefront of efforts to bring about much needed reforms in this country.
Especially in the matter of electoral reforms.
She is now being held in detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA), a legislation that has draconian provisions allowing for detention without trial.
What was the stated reason for the introduction of this law onto our statute books?
Maria may be held for 28 days, or longer.
In solitary confinement.
At an unknown location.
She stood up for us, and for our children.
Let us now stand in solidarity with her.
