Dear Najib,
Salamunalaika.
A Malaysiakini report entitled ‘This is an Islamic state : Najib’ reports that you made the following statements :
‘Malaysia is an Islamic state and not a secular one’
‘Islam is the official religion and we are an Islamic state’
‘We have never been secular…’
Like you, I too believe in Islam.
And like me, I am sure that you know full well that God commands the truth and nothing but the truth.
I am therefore first obliged to ask if you did indeed make these claims?
If so, let me state categorically that your claims are untrue.
This is the truth as I discern from the materials that abound.
Your late father, according to history, was part of the 1956 delegation that went to London to secure our independence.
Truly, this nation is indebted to your late father, the late Tunku and every freedom fighter of the era for securing independence for our nation.
And a secular Federal Constitution.
Yes, secular.
Have you not read the Reid Commission report, that document that bears testimony to the selfless work of our leaders of days gone by?
Tun Salleh Abas did, in extenso, in the case of Che Omar Che Soh. I have referred to this in an earlier post entitled ‘Historical and Constitutional Position of Islam Judicially Examined’
Let me reproduce for you here the relevant excerpt from Tun Salleh’s judgment.
‘…we have to set aside our personal feelings because the law in this country is still what it is today, secular law, where morality not accepted by the law is not enjoying the status of law. Perhaps that argument should be addressed at other forums or at seminars and, perhaps, to politicians and Parliament. Until the law and the system is changed, we have no choice but to proceed as we are doing today.”
Do you know what Tunku’s view was on this secular / Islamic state issue?
See what Tunku said on the occasion of his 80th birthday as reported by the Star in February, 1983.
Tunku said :
‘The country has a multi-racial population with various beliefs. Malaysia must continue as a secular State with Islam as the official religion’.
Tunku was not alone.
This how the report in the Star reads :
‘Former Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn has supported Tunku Abdul Rahman’s view that Malaysia should not be turned into an islamic state…”The nation can still be functional as a secular state with Islam as the offical religion,” he said’
What were you thinking of when you made what appear to me to be unfounded claims?
Aside from being untrue, they also amount to a slur on Tunku and Tun Hussein.
These two great statesmen got it wrong?
As one who, like you, professes a belief in Islam, I must ask that you desist in these unfounded contentions.
As you also well know, God in the Holy Qur’an commands that when there is a dispute on an issue, it is proper to call in the evidence of the respective parties.
You say Islamic state.
I say secular.
I have produced my proof.
‘Have you any knowledge with you? If so, bring it forth’ – Surah 6 verse 148 of the Holy Qur’an
Please note that I have refrained from invoking the last part of the verse above. At this juncture, I shall assume you were merely mistaken.
I am obliged to say here that if you insist on continuing to make these assertions without bringing forth your proof, I shall invoke the curse of God as commanded in Surah 3 verse 61 of the Holy Qur’an
Wassalam.

Haris,
I am afraid you made one blatant mistake!
You dignified a nincompoop with an essay that would just go above his head. For such a fool just a single word should have sufficed. I’d have suggested “bullocks”!
But thanks for some of those reminders.
But you see, these days what you see is these guys going the way of popular statements which no one can object openly that will be reported by the media. MCA would not respond and MIC would be silent. The man has spoken and he has probably pre-empted PAS on something they might ahve invoked. But come on, we all know how inconvenient Islam must be for Najib. His perported rendevous in Port Dickson years ago and of course the never ending Altanunya allegations! So don’t la take him seriously.

I sorta-kinda touched on this in a post I did yesterday. To quote: ‘Words said for political expediency usually come back and f****** bite you in the ass – hard.‘. I have a feeling that this statement was made to ‘appease’ the I-wanna-Islamic-State crowd, being that the next GE is probably coming sooner than expected… that’s the speculation, anyways.
Statements like these, however, are bound to come back and haunt us…
In any case, Haris, good job on the analytical approach to shooting this statement down… that’s why you’re a lawyer, and Walski’s not!
PEACE!

… IN ENGLISH …
To the dedicated members of our armed forces and still honest civil servants in the Defense Ministry.
There may come a time we may have to uphold our sovereignity at Pulau Batu Puteh against Spore, at Selat Ambalat against Indonesians, or Terumbu Layan2 against China and God knows what else.
Allow me to pose this fact before you :-
CANNIBALISATION OF SPARE PARTS DURING WAR TIME IS A FACT THAT CANNOT BE AVOIDED.
I am sure, you, members of the armed forces and still honest civil servants of theDefense Ministry will agree with that statement, yes?
Allow me to pose this question before you then :-
IS CANNIBALISATION OF SPARE PARTS DURING PEACE TIME ACCEPTABLE? ESPECIALLY WITH AGING MILITARY EQUIPMENT THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AGES AGO?
I trust your patriotism, and your concern for the serving members of the armed forces will help you answer that question honestly in light of the crash of the Nuri with the loss of six brave souls in the service of defending our country.

Professing to be a Muslim, he’s beginning to sound like a total disgrace to the faith he’s so-called championing for our Muslim brethrens in this country. Vote for change folks. Clowns like him don’t deserve to lead Malaysians. Not only is he now a disgrace to the faith, he’s a disgrace to the nation as well!

It is statements like these that contribute towards defining Islam Hadhari. The Ulamaks and the Religious Officers can now further push their boundaries to see how far tehy can go in imposing their will on all of us. More so on the Muslim ummah. And as usual, the Ummah will not protest. When the religious officers get away with their acts a second time, then it becomes law!Of course they can continue taking the mickey out out non-Muslims. AFter all the non Muslims don’t have a forum or any kind of worthwhile leader who will issue any kind of caution to the UMNO leaders. See their response in today’s The Sun to Najib’s statement! Very, soon DBKL and all other Municipalities will be issuing summons and closing the shops of Hindus’ who display their religious pictures in their shops. It could even be a vegetarian shop, and they will be in for trouble if Muslims patronise it. But these same guys will not disturb the little Chinese alters and temples laid out in front of Chinese owned buildings, factories, shops, construction sites etc….simply because they are a little more vocal and possibly can be a little more violent than the docile Indians.
But surely, to the Ulamak and the REligious Officials Najib’s statement would be seen as an acknowledgement of their contribution towards defining Islam Hadhari.

Haris,
Brief and to the point. Najib will have no answer to your challenge. But please do not curse him, as God will take care of him and his sins. God will Bless you. That’s what matters.
Najib is a political chameleon.
As I know, we defend and uphold our religion by the way we live our lives. Not by making lofty pronouncements and shouting in the streets or wielding the keris, snatching corpses, rehabilitating would-be apostates or destroying houses of worship.
Najib should be the last person on earth to talk about Islam. Even his character and morality is tainted beyond repair.
In any other civilized country he would have been dumped into the dung heaps a long ago.
He can survive politically in this country because, by and large, the citizenry do not have a moral conscience.

Dear Haris,
This is the most ridiculous remark to come out from Sdr.Najib so far. It stinks.
Why has he become a very confused UMNO leader? I thought he would have learned from his late father and his contemporaries on what he should say and what he should not. In stead, he is trying to be revisionist historian. Bodoh betul.
Malaysia is a secular state with a secular constitution, secular laws, and secular institutions all the way since we got our Independence in 1957. This Islamic state idea was a PAS agenda, flatly rejected by Malaysians.
Najib is going to pay a heavy price for this in the coming elections. His party UMNO will likely get a trashing. Even PAS which has yet to abandon of an Islamic state is astute enough not to make such a statement.
I had expected Najib to be more careful and astute. Unfortunately he is not. How can he lead this country, if he cannot accept that our society is multi racial and multi confessional?

I believe this message has to go to Najib’s cousin, Hishamuddin. It has to be clearly explained to the cabinet that 2 PM’s (I thought Tun Razak also came out against anti-secular state people) were admanat that Malaysia is a secular state.

After thinking about it over 24 hours now, actually really does it matter? As long as wine, woman and song is available at times, who really cares if Najib thinks this is an Islamic State? Even if he does not like wine, we can all be comforted by his weakness for women! Mind you Islamic State that approves of a Casino, slot machines all over the place, toto and lotto and what ever else that we have, and of course access to the finest wines, whiskeys and brandies! I guess the next point of attack for the religious officers will be these things then!!

They say a leopard never changes its spots. Najib played to the gallery when he was a budding politician but of late he has toned down because he cant be seen to be talking racial politics because of his status. But now he seems to be throwing caution to the winds for reasons known obviously to himself. He appears to be trying to divert the public’s attention from issues which have dogged him. Be that as it may, Najib can say all he wants about Malaysia being a islamic state, but the majority of Malaysians are smart enough to know that we are a secular state. One look at the so-called islamic states will make us think whether we want to walk the same path.

Bro,
Sincere? Glad you think so.
Brave? Not true. I am fearful of the day that I must meet God and that I will be told that I witnessed untruth and manifest injustice and remained silent. So I speak up out of fear.
I imagine that those who keep silent do not fear the wrath of God that awaits the silent aiders and abettors of injustice. Those are the brave ones.

Why not charge Najib with sedition?
However, please Remember in the general elections of 1999 the UMNO government and, in particular the MCA, demonised the DAP but taking large advertisments in the media that the DAP was getting into an unholy pact with the devil by teaming up with the PAS for the elections. The basis of this demonisation was that PAS trying to make Malaysia an Islamic state.
Well, what do we have now? MCA is not only in bed with a party trying to make Malaysia an Islamic state. It is already and still in bed with a party who has declared that it has made Malaysia an Islamic state. Being in bed who is effing who? Which is worse? MCA in bed with a party who has made Malaysia an Islamic state or DAP who has rejected PAS’s attempt to make Malaysia an Islamic state? DAP has declared it will not have any pact with PAS for the next elections. MCA is still very happy to sleep with the Islamic party.
Who is the worse hypocrite on this matter? Who is protecting their own political positions and sacrificing principles for office? Does anyone believe that MCA, in the face of their being in bed with the party which has made Malaysia an Islamic state, is defending the position of the non-malays and non muslims? MCA, such two faced liars!!!

Would anyone from UMNO especially PM Badawi, correct the DPM’s statement that Malaysia is an Islamic State? Or is it the PM’s idea of Islam Hadhari. And why former PM Dr. M was able to get away with the same statement?
Malaysia is definitely clueless on many front because it is blinded by religious faith and ethnic supremacy thinking.

I do not think this should be a year to celebrate 50 years of independence. I think August 31st 2007 should be a day of solemnity where all of us go to our respective places of worship at the start of the day to pray for OUR country, OUR future, OUR UNITY and OUR DESTINY AS ONE PEOPLE in the land that God has put us into. And then let us meet in coffeeshops, homes to talk about our future.
Let us have done with the superficialities of parades and songs of celebration. Let us see August 31st this year as the solemn and quiet birth of something new, not the celebration of something we pretend to have achieved but never have.
When our beloved Tunku gave a speech at the ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone for the Sarawak Warriors Monument in Kuching on November 29, 1990, a week before his demise, he urged Malaysians of all races to be united and loyal to Malaysia. Love for the nation, he had emphasised, should be the hallmark of the people to ensure that Malaysia’s sovereignty and stature be preserved. During that speech, our 87-year-old Bapa Malaysia wept openly, moving others too to tears.
And then, in the same way that he had led this country into its victory cry on August 31st , 1957, the Tunku shouted ‘Merdeka’ three times in 1990. We know the affairs of the nation at that time broke his heart. He was deeply saddened by so many events, most of all by the betrayal of trust.
When he shouted ‘Merdeka’ yet again in 1990, 33 years after independence, he was not reminiscing. He was grieving for the loss of something, for a hope that never came to light, for a dream he had that died.
The Tunku knew his time was almost up. So when he shouted out ‘Merdeka’ he was most likely asking us to remember “where we had begun and where we were 33 years later (1990).
“Was the Tunku telling us that the independence we had won was still after 33 years only territorial?
“Was he weeping because more importantly, the TRUE INDEPENDENCE he desired for us – FREEDOM FROM ALL BELIEFS AND SENTIMENTS THAT HURT THE HUMAN HEART AND THE HUMAN SPIRIT – was still a dream and we must BEGIN AGAIN that fight to be FREE?”
I think he was and so let us begin again this 31st August.
I give my loyalty to God, to king and country and my Malaysian brothers and sisters.
I choose not to see any of you as Malay, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan, Eurasian, Punjabi. I choose to see you as God’s creation. And I place myself in that position to help fulfil a dream of unity that began in 1957 but which, till today, we have yet to make a reality.
Come, let us be one in heart and spirit. Let us love this country and one another and cherish our oneness.

I have forgotten to add that Islam is a religion and must be viewed and accepted in that context. The verses in the Quran and in the authentic hadis, pertaining to rules and laws are meant for Muslims, i.e. if you have accepted Islam, you are bound by these laws. The so-called Islamic state of Medina created by the Prophet pbuh when he moved from Makkah to Yathrib wasn’t really a state in a political sense and Islamic laws were not enforced among the non-Muslims of the day. Nevertheless PAS love to use this notion to authenticate its political struggle simply because this very political idea is popular and well-accepted among the less-learned Muslims. And as for Najib, it would gain him the lost political-milage and might just enhance his chances to secure the used-to-be convincing majority in the next general election.

Some background of the Qur’anic verses quoted by Haris:
The complete verse number 148, Surah 6:
“Those who give partners (to God) will say: “If God had wished, we should not have given partners to Him nor would our fathers; nor should we have had any taboos.” So did their ancestors argue falsely, until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: “Have ye any (certain) knowledge? If so, produce it before us. Ye follow nothing but conjecture: ye do nothing but lie.”
This verse was the answer from Allah to the Meccan Pagans.
The complete verse number 61, Surah 3:
“If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: “Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of God on those who lie!”
Year 10 After Hijrah, a Christian embassy from Najran came upon hearing about a verse that explains the position of Christ. They refused to accept Islam, so Prophet Muhammad proposed a mubahalah (the challenge as in the verse). The Christians declined, and they were dismissed in a spirit of tolerance with a promise of protection from the State in return for tribute.
abuhanaan,
Thank you for your input.

Thank buddha for people like you harris – otherwise we common folks will be led down the false path again and again…
The thing that amazes me in this country is the ‘cakap tak serupa binkin’ syndrome: we try to potray ourselves as muslims, promote peity, and now try to call this an islamic state. We must be joking – look at our way of life and all the things unislamic around the country – enjoyed by the general population, politicians included.
There is a word in islam i believe to describe this – it is called MUNAFIK – ‘just pretending’
Mat,
Thank Buddha, Allah, Elohim, Yeshua, Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, Ganesha, Murugan, etc. Thank God by all the finest names for they all belong to Him ( Surah 17 verse 110 of the Holy Qur’an ).
Yes, thank God that we have people like Syed Husin Ali, Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh who have stayed true to the cause and who have never abandoned us though they must not be faulted for feeling that we have time and again turned a blind eye to the gross injustice that has been inflicted upon them in fighting our cause.
I am however, unable to agree with the second paragraph in your comment as it suggests that Najib is wrong in his claim, not because it is historically and legally incorrect but because much of the way of life, particularly that of the general population is unIslamic.
If we accept that absence of compulsion is paramount in Islam, one sees immediately that the constitutional set-up as originally envisaged is indeed Islamic. The way of life crafted under the constitution, except for Article 153, is Islamic in that it encompasses most of the ideals of justice advocated in the Holy Qur’an.
What is unIslamic is the way the religious authorities have been going around trying to force their moral perceptions down the throats of the populace and the way politicians and theologians are trying to dismantle the social contract.

I cant wait for the next national elections. If anything I think the Rakyat would like to be given another chance to wipe BN out permanently this time. They have sure proved themselves to be worse than a pack of greedy and corrupted clowns. They think power is Gods gift to them, and that the reputation of their fathers can mask their true identities. I dont care if PAS wants Malaysia an Islamic country, just as long as BN is out of the picture, id vote for PAS if i have to. It makes me wonder who actually voted for those fools in the last election. One good thing though. Najib will be giving out loads of freebies before that, so make sure we all take full advantage of that, then kick him in the arse.
