Malaysianinsider reports that you had “defended the social contract, the so-called unwritten agreement between the Malays and the non-Malays during independence, by affirming that without the agreement, Malaysia would not have been formed”.
They quoted you :
“If there was no social contract, the terms and conditions of allowing citizenship to non-Malays would have not taken place. One million outsiders were given citizenships at the time.”
Now, this quote from you got me curious.
Let me tell you why.
I conferred with my aunt, who confirmed that my maternal great grandfather, Eliathamby, of whom I’ve written previously in a posting entitled “The land that my forefathers helped build”, would have left Ceylon and arrived in what is now West Malaysia, around 1870. He died well before the conclusion of that social contract that you spoke of, so my great grandfather would not have come within those ‘one million outsiders’ who acquired citizenship at the time of independence in 1957.
My maternal grandfather, Vellupillay T. Williams, never lived to see the formation of Malaya so he, too, did not make up the ‘one million outsiders’.
Enough of my family tree.
Let’s look at yours.
I got this from a blog, Malaysiana :
Perhaps, the most famous Malayalee to land in George Town was Iskandar Kutty, a merchant who married a Johor-Riau wife Siti Hawa Iskandar.
They became the proud parents of Alor Star’s top public school Sultan Abdul Hamid College’s founder-principal and Kedah’s royal educator Datuk Mohamad Iskandar.
Mohamad was the school teacher of Tunku Abdul Rahman.
He and his wife Datin Wan Tempawan Wan Hanafi from the Kedah Bendahara’s (Prime Minister’s) clan, were the proud parents of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s Father of Modernisation and fourth Prime Minister.
And this from Malaysia Today :
Born in December 20, 1925, Dr Mahathir hailed from the state of Kedah, at the capital of Alor Star, whose father was a school teacher. His father was Indian who migrated from Kerala, who married a malay lady and sold banana fritters during the second world war. His early education was through vernacular school and at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College in the city.
My question, then, Doc, firstly, is whether your father was amongst the ‘one million outsiders’?
And when did you become ‘Malay’, Doc?
When did you move from being a son of an Indian who migrated from Kerala to a Malay?
Not that I care, but when?
Speaking of Malay, do you remember your “Malay Dilemma”, Doc?
Do you remember what you said about the problem of inbreeding amongst the Malay community, and that whole business of genes?
Back then, who had heard of this thing called DNA?
Who had ever imagined that science would one day make it possible for all of us to trace our genealogy?
Guess what, Doc?
It seems, based on all this new DNA scientific knowledge, that there’s no such thing as a Malay race.
It would seem that you’ve gone from being a son of an Indian who migrated from Kerala to a ‘does not exist’.
Just like that!
My cyber buddy, Michael Chick, has written extensively on this matter, in a three-parter in Malaysiakini. HERE, HERE, and HERE .
See what Michael writes in his final part : “The people Malaysians call ‘Malay’, are actually only a tiny sub-component of the much larger Austronesian group. And all Austronesians are the end-product of extensive inter-breeding between the Taiwanese and Dravidic Indians. All this has finally been irrefutably proven by independent DNA testings from world-class faculties”.
I’ve never been very good at all these sciences, Doc, but if you’re any better, and you think Michael’s cocked-up big time in his conclusions, why don’t you take him on?
Damn, I digress.
So when and how did you become Malay, Doc?
Because of the definition of ‘Malay’ in the Federal Constitution, Doc?
Article 160 (2)?
That right?
So, right up until the last moments before Tunku’s declaration of independence, you were the son of an Indian who migrated from Kerala, and moments later
you were magically transformed into a Malay?
And is not the definition of Malay in Article 160(2) stated to be for the limited purpose where the word ‘Malay’ appears in the Constitution?
But really, Doc, I don’t give a toss whether you hold yourself out as Malay or the son of an Indian who migrated from Kerala.
Whatever turns you on.
What pisses me off is this Bumi-non Bumi crap.
November 19th, last year, The Star reported on Najib’s balik kampung to Makassar in South Sulawesi. You can read the report HERE.
Najib is reported to have said : “I feel like I am returning to my roots,” and, when asked to comment on the possibility that some people might view the fact that he had roots here in a negative light, Najib said: “I am not apologetic about it. This is my family history and I am proud of it.”
According to the report, Najib said he was the direct descendant of Bugis royalty who migrated to Pahang in the 18th century.
Well, at least this Malaysian is not ashamed of his roots!
Now, you know that aunt I mentioned earlier?
You know her.
Aunty Rasammah.
I googled her name yesterday and this is what is written of her in Wikipedia.
“Rasammah Bhupalan, also known as Rasammah Naomi Navarednam or Mrs F.R. Bhupalan is a renowned Malaysian freedom fighter and social activist
Born in 1927, she has championed causes such as the anti-drug abuse movement, women’s rights, education and social justice causes.
Rasammah was one of the earliest women involved in the fight for Malaysian (then Malaya) independence. She joined the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the women’s wing of the Indian National Army, to fight the British. She served in Burma during World War II.
As founder president of the Women Teacher’s Union, she fought for equal pay for women teachers and tried to bring disparate teachers’ unions under an umbrella.
The former school principal was the first Asian representative of the World Confederation of Organisations of the Teaching Profession for two successive terms. She was also very active in the National Council of Women’s Organisation (NCWO) and Pemadam.
She was a teacher in the Methodist Boys’ School, Kuala Lumpur from 1959 to 1964 and was the principal of the Methodist Girls School, Kuala Lumpur for 13 years from 1970 until she retired in 1982. On 11th November 2007, Mrs.Bhupalan was one of the few veteran teachers who were invited to attend MBSSKL’s 110th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. The dinner was specially organized to honour all the former and current teachers of the school”.
Quite frankly, I think the write-up in Wikipedia does little justice to all that Aunty Rasammah has done for this country. But that is another matter.
More importantly, Doc, why are you, the son of an Indian who migrated from Kerala, and Najib, the descendant of Bugis who migrated from Sulawesi, bumiputra, whilst Aunty Rasammah is not?

Yan, I suggest you make an attempt to apply to the identity department and change your status to Malay Bumiputra, see what they’ll say to you since bumi status entitles you to tax free income, free land, 7% discount for any new houses etc etc. If the dept rejected your application you should contest it in court citing your uncle, Dr Mahathir, why can he change from an Indian to be Bumiputra (MALAY) and why can’t you.
But if it happened that you’re some UMNOputra hiding cowardly behind a girl’s photo please help to push for a change in our parliamentary constitutions to allow any Indian Muslims who wish to, may change to Malay Bumiputra anytime as they like to enjoy the benefits. And declare as an Indian as and when they like too. The Indian Muslim Association should love you much dearer than Dr Mahathir.

How Truly holier than thou he looks with his beguiling forked tongue. How do I know, I worked in front of UMNO Hq in Chow Kit, not PWTC. the old UMNO bldg. To please clear up the myth that Malaysia can only be ruled by a Malay is total Hogwash, Malaysia has had a Chnaman as a prime minister, Yes CHINAMAN, which was hushed up. This was when UMNO was declared an illegal entity, (the elections declared null and void during the Team A vs Team B court case) and never registered with the R.O.S. Mahathir the INDIAN the other non-Malay PM had to step down and all UMNO politicians became independent MP’s, History does not lie. MCA President stepped in and became pm for a week. Throughout this few weeks with the incidences at churches and latest at mosques, the automatic respond of almost everyone, Muslims and non-Muslim alike is that its done by provocateurs. WHY?
Because everyone have seen it before in May 13, 1969. The reflex response of people over the last few weeks is basically proof that May 13, 1969 and the policy that followed are based on key lies and this ‘social contract’ is one of them. Otherwise, the respond of what happened in the last few weeks would not have been what it is.
The last 42 years of UMNO/BN rule are based on key lies i.e. illegitimate and that is why its running into trouble. You can’t cover up lies, the truth has a way of coming out. Mahathir may think otherwise because he believe 9/11 was created James Cameron-like Jews but the rest of us are not as ‘worldly and wise’ as he is.
We are just not as used to lying and expresses the truth of from our undarkened heart.

All children of Malaysian citizens yang “diputrakan di bumi Malaysia” should get bumiputra status.
Unfortunately this is not so.
However, my wife had the good fortune to meet a young lady who worked as a freelance cleaner at my condo and struck up a conversation. Both her parents had migrated from Indonesia. Asked if she was therefore a Malaysian PR, she showed her BLUE IC with MUSLIM NAME to my wife.
BLUE IC? MUSLIM NAME? What does that tell you about the official status of this low-skill, low-salary, non-taxpaying child of immigrant parents?
And these are the people who are being welcomed with open arms to Malaysia?! While many of our nation’s best and brightest have decided to take their talents and their money to countries that welcomed them more than their homeland!
I myself have dozens of friends who are now leading happy lives overseas, enjoying respect, opportunities and rights as immigrants that they never could hope for as Malaysian citizens.

Speaking from experience, as a lowly regarded Cinakui born and bred in Malaysia, living overseas, I find it interesting that we often regarded ourselves as Malaysian first and then Chinese (or Indian) when we excitedly met new friends from ‘Kampung Malaysia’. Reality bangs on our head when we return to our homeland, where we are 2nd-class ‘non-bumi Malaysian’ just because we carry Chinese ancestor’s genes. If we want to criticise the government for its race based policies, it is only fair we also criticise our own race based mentality. To point the finger only one way is sheer hypocrisy. We have ALL contributed to the rot in some way – with our way of thinking, our actions, our words, our inactions, our apathy. None of us can claim to be innocent.
How many of us see ourselves as Malaysians first followed by our ethnicity? I think we all know the answer is not many. How many of us hold on to age old stereotypes i.e. Malays are lazy & stupid, Indians are untrustworthy & violent, Chinese are greedy & selfish? I think we all know the answer is quite a lot. How many of us then are willing to (to quote the late Michael Jackson) ‘start with the man in the mirror and ask him to change his ways’?
Just as the government is guilty of playing us against each other, we are also guilty of playing ourselves up against each other. If Malaysia is to have any chance of a better future, we MUST change our mindsets. The old way of ‘every race for itself’ is NOT going to work. We need to see ourselves and each other as MALAYSIANS first and everything else a distant second. Then and only then will the wheels of change begin to turn. Until then we will remain stuck in the pit of quicksand that is the past, sinking lower with each passing minute.
There is still some hope left but my fellow Malaysians (yes, MALAYSIANS not Indians, Chinese, Malays or dan lain-lain), voting is just the tip of the iceberg. In the same way we’re all gung ho about getting people to vote, we need to get them (ourselves included) to think or rather re – think. The real change starts much sooner. In fact it starts right now.

Mahathir bin Mohd Iskandar Kutty is what he says he is, whether it accurately reflects his true biological roots and DNA content or not. The Federal Constitution, supreme law of the land, backs him up in black and white words.
There are countless folks I have encountered who feel more comfortable with some facade or label other than what they are born with.
From cosmetic “fairness = loveliness” advertisements brainwashed girls to some saudara baru who try to be more Muslim than Muslims (ditching their non-Malay identities along the way too) to young “bananas” – Asians who come back from an educational stint overseas behaving and speaking more Mat Salleh than real Mat Sallehs. Some folks even wangle or buy titles and academic qualifications, even from degree mills, to decorate their names with.
It is their right to do so, if that is what makes them feel comfortable with themselves.
But I wonder if they know what they themselves really are, what they stand for and believe in. To be proud of one’s birth-right, heritage and skin. As William Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true”.
Of course when politics and affirmative action goodies come into play, in Malaysia where the long-dominant political party is the United MALAY National Organisation and juicy NEP (and its variations) fruits abound, the situation escalates to a much more serious and higher level.
Whither real unity and Najib’s 1Malaysia?

January 29, 2010
Dear Haris
I’m not going to comment on what you have said about Dr Mahathir’s roots, especially about the repetition of the phrase “Indian who migrated from Kerala”, even though it echoes of the same racist taunts used by people who jeer at us “pendatangs”.
You sound very angry. However, even when angered with just cause, one must also not stray far from the facts in order to make a point. Or else, you become no better than those whom you criticise for twisting history.
Not to discredit the ‘freedom fighter’ credentials of your esteemed aunt, but I have to ask – which country did she fight for?
As a member of the ill-fated Rani of the Jhansi Regiment (named after a heroine of the Indian Mutiny-rebellion in 1857), your aunt must have been one of those young, wide-eyed girls listening to Subhas Chandra Bose who was recruiting members for his Indian National Army in Singapore & Malaya in 1943, with the support of his patron, the Japanese Army, and the blessing of Hitler, whom Bose had met in May the year before. Bose rallied his supporters & new recruits under the call “Chalo Delhi!” (not “Chalo Kuala Lumpur”), a reflection of the primary agenda for his movement – to free India from the British by aligning himself to the fascists in the Axis; ie, the Third Reich, Mussolini & Japan. He stood next to Tojo when he addressed Malayans in Singapore in 1943.
In Malaya, Bose announced the formation of the provisional government in exile for India – Azad Hind: “But with all the Indian leaders in prison and the people at home totally disarmed – it is not possible to set up the Provisional Government of Azad Hind within India, or to launch an armed struggle under the aegis of that Government. It is therefore the duty of the Indian Independence League in East Asia, supported by patriotic Indians at home and abroad to undertake this task…”
The Japanese helped Bose establish military training camps for his Indian National Army in Malaya, with “youth training camps” in Ipoh, Seremban & Kuala Lumpur, where Indians domiciled in Malaya sent their children to train for Bose’s army.
In Oct 1943, Bose launched the Rani of Jhansi regiment – under the leadership of Singapore-based doctor Lakshmi Swaminathan. By end 1943, Bose sent the first contingent of 500 of these young women fighters to Burma to join the guerrila war against the British in India, who were in turn trying to regain lost ground in Burma. The Rani of Jhansi eventually had to return to Malaya within the year, after the disastrous campaign mismanaged by Bose in Burma. They did not actually get involved in actual combat.
Haris – maybe you could ask your aunt – for which country’s independence and freedom was she fighting? I am not questioning your aunt’s history. Just your interpretation of it. She must have been young and idealistic all those years ago, so it’s understandable that she didn’t question the credentials of the leader she chose to follow – the same leader who allied himself to Hitler, Mussolini and the genocidal Japanese army.
But idealism aside, today, it is irresponsible to twist history to suit a position you seem to be taking in justifying the right of people born in Malaysia to be Malaysian, no matter what “race” they profess to be.
Your aunt and the others in the Rani of Jhansi regiment were not Malaysian freedom fighters. They fought for Indian independence under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose, someone who history also does not paint in such a good light after all, who travelled all the way to Germany to have an audience with Hitler to gain the Fuhrer’s blessing.
World War 2 is not a simple black-and-white war of the good versus the bad – I agree. If the Axis powers won, perhaps Bose would have been painted in a different light. But it doesn’t change the fact that you are wrong factually when you claim that your aunt was a Malaysian freedom fighter and imply that she fought for Malaya’s independence, in relation to her connection with the INA and the Rani of Jhansi Regiment.
And worse of all, my pointing out the facts to you about your aunt’s real roots may just bring to mind that old, erroneous stereotype in Malaysia – that we “pendatangs” are more loyal to their countries of origin than to Malaysia.
And that is not my intention at all.

Sheryll, such a long yarn of irrelevant history. Who cares about this Bose fellow? I dont get your point at all. I thought Haris’ posting of her aunt is just simply to show that there are countless folks out there who toiled and sweated for this country, in small and big ways – and if so, why are they any lesser a Malaysian? I thought that was an excellent point.

But you don’t want to understand. Facts are just too tedious.

It was because India was part of the British Empire that it made it possible for Britain to control all other colonies. As long as India has part of the Empire, Malaya would never be freed. Hence the British must be chased out of India first, then and only then can all colonies be freed. It was this reason that made revolutionaries like Bose to fight the British in India first before fighting them in Malaya and elswhere. And to fight the British one would need allies, like the Japanese and the Germans.
In this context, Bose, the INA and Bhupalan were worldwide freedom fighters, as they were fighting a world empire which included Malaya.
18,000 Malaysian Indians and another 25,000 Indian POWs were part of the INA which included a few hundred Malays. There were another batch of about 60,000 Indians who worked on the Kwai River railroad and this batch included a few thousand Malays. All of these people can be classified as freedom fighters as they contributed to the effort.

Written by a psychiatrist who carries out an analysis of George W. Bush based on the latter’s behaviour and speech patterns. A similar book on

Dear Haris,
You’ve hit the nail again. It’s all about politics and popularity which inevitably results in dividing the races in Malaysia. He is a man who blames all Jews, whereaver they are, on the prediacment not only in the Middle-East but also in the USA and Asia. Leaders like him think they are the Almighty on earth.

Dear Mr. Haris,
To be frank, I feel emphatic of your quest to define the bumi/non bumi things. Well, it is simple actually…you have to be a Muslim. There is NOTHING to do with races, whatever you are..i.e. Malay, Malayalee, Bugis, Ceylonese, Chinese and whatnot…it is the RELIGION..if you are not muslim, you get half of what muslim get in Malaysia. Betul…tak tipu. tak pecaya ke? ;). You see Dr. Ridhuan, Dr. Mahathir, Ungku Aziz…can you spot the similarity?
Thank you.

The argument that the Malay race does not exist is not true. We might as well say the chinese race does not exist because all humans are descendants of people out of Africa, so essentially we are all ‘africans’.
Malays are the descendents of the Hindu Srivijaya empire that originated from Palembeng Sumatera. At the height of it’s power the Malay Srivijaya’s influence covered majority of Sumatera, Peninsular Malaya and Southern Thailand.
It is important to note that the Malays are different from say, the Javanese, Dayaks, Kadazandusuns or even the Acehnese. Genetically, they may originate from the same genepool, but culturally and historically, they can rightfully be referred to as different races. To say that the Malay race does not exist is to say that the Dayaks and the Kadazandusuns also does not exist as a race and imply that they should all be referred to as the Austronesian race instead.
The problem is not the Malay race, but the definition of the Malay race as put forth by UMNO. UMNO’s vague definitions allowed entry of people who would otherwise not be ‘Malay’ to join them in return for ‘bumiputera’ priviledges. I.e. the definition of Malay by UMNO is no longer that of a race but that of a ‘status’. In Malaysia, the word ‘Malay’ does not define your race, it actually defines your status. That is why Dr. M, who would have traditionally been an Indian by race, still enjoys being called a Malay.
katdog,
Cultural differences maketh not a new race

Thanks Harris, for having me back again…
Dear Katdog let’s have a closer look again at what you said:
“…The argument that the Malay race does not exist is not true…”
MC: Please read my last statement at the end.
We might as well say the chinese race does not exist ..”
MC: Correct. It’s Mongoloid Race, NOT Chinese Race. Hence, no Japanese Race, Korean Race, Taiwan, nor Hong Kong Race either. Not even a Mongolian Race, but all under the Mongoloid Family.
“..because all humans are descendants of people out of Africa, so essentially we are all ‘africans’…”
MC: Gentically speaking, Yes. But that was more than 120k years ago. Now I challenge you to show me which part of you looks African.
We are however, one and the same members of the Human Race.
Hence I stress the need to behave that way.
“..Malays are the descendents of the Hindu..”
MC: Religion has absolutely NOTHING to do with one’s race. Hence the lack of need to emphasize Hindu at all.
“..Srivijaya empire that originated from Palembeng Sumatera. At the height of it’s power the Malay Srivijaya’s influence covered majority of Sumatera, Peninsular Malaya and Southern Thailand…”
MC: Wrong again. Encik SreeVeeChaya decided to build the Ayudthian Empire, hence it was NOT just the southern Part of the Thai Kingdom, as you mentioned. Please read Lotus Publications for a more indepth understanding of Sree-Vee-Chaya. (aka SriVijaya)
“…It is important to note that the Malays are different from say, the Javanese, Dayaks, Kadazandusuns or even the Acehnese. Genetically, they may originate from the same gene-pool…”
MC: Same Gene-Pool, means same race. Period. Also, look at how the original way the word “Orang” was used. Orang India, means People from India. Orang Bhutan, means people from Bhutan. Orang Kelantan means people from Kelantan. You tell me there’s now a Bangsa Kelantan? Because we all know that they came from the Champa Kingdom in Central Vietnam.
“…but culturally and historically, they can rightfully be referred to as different races…”
MC: Can you please stand up, and address the “Singaporean Race” then? How about the Pakistani Race? What are you really looking at? Political boundaries. and NOT Race differentials. So, you mean to tell me that there is a Bangladeshi Race, and a Pakistani Race, which is supposed to be different from the Indian Race?
“…To say that the Malay race does not exist is to say that the Dayaks and the Kadazandusuns also does not exist as a race..”
MC: You are absolutely right here. The Dayaks and the KadazanDusuns are NOT a Race. It’s the Dayak (land and sea) tribes !! comprising of the Ibans, the Bidayuh’s, the Kayan, the Kelabit, the Berawan, Penan, and so on. Whle those in Sabah comprise of the Muruts, the Bajau, the Rungus, and the Sino everything. But each is definitely NOT a race. They are mere tribes. Just like the REAL Malay tribe who have their origins from Kampong Melayu, Jambi, Palembang, Sumatera. Why is it just so difficult to understand this? Melayu is nothing more than a TRIBE !!! Puak or Suku.
There is absolutely NO Bangsa Melayu !! Please re-read the Constitution. It says nothing about the Malay Race. It just says the “Malays…” nothing more, nothing less.
Here’s the excerp again:
Article 160 (2)
❍ “Malay” means a person who professes the religion of Islam, habitually speaks the Malay language, conforms to Malay custom and…
MC: Not a single word of RACE or Bangsa.
“…and imply that they should all be referred to as the Austronesian race instead…”
MC: Almost Correct !!!
Not just implied, but explicitly expressedly so.
Always remember the 5 Races:
The Caucasoid, the Negroid, the Mongoloid, the Dravidic, and the Autronesian. That’s it !!! Which one do you belong to?
Peace…
Katdog, where are you-hoo?

MM does not want to be associated with the title ‘Malayalee’. Thats why he is standing up more then an ‘original’ malay. Even the original Malay is not bothered about this racist thing. But people who origante from Indian, Malayaleee, chinese, pakistani, and other races are so busy upholding that they are more ‘Malay. What a pity. Top of them is MM.
Indonesians, Philipino descendants who got their blue ic’s ‘overnight’ compare to others who have been patiently for almost 40 years are claiming to be “BUMIPUTRAS. Isn’t that frustrating. We the taxpayers have to pay for these illegally made legal citizens for all their pleasure now. They are only unskilled laborers. All these done so that they can VOTE for the ruling party and put them in power forever so that they can go on to establish dynasties of their own.
What a pity leaders of today in this country go on doing what they like without giving a damn for the country .

I think we shouldn’t be differentiated by BUMIPUTRA and BUMIPUTERA, but just MALAYSIAN. This is because, most of the classified BUMIPUTERA were indeed “celup” ones where their forefathers come from ELSEWHERE, be it china, india or indonesia. Furthermore, Quran says everyone is the same in the eyes of ALLAH. So, while Malaysia is a religious country, the policies and practices do not match the Islamic principles.

Sheryll,
1. Can you please comment on what Haris have said about Mahathir, we are all ears.
2. Haris don’t talk much about freedom fighter, he merely made a comparison between his aunt and someone that claim to be more bumi. If you are not happy with what was written in Wikipedia, be my guess to send them your version of fact.
3. Did you ever ask an American who is more American, George Washington that killed the native or native that killed by George Washington?
Your intention is to show off your tiny understanding of history. Even that you fail.
Sheryll Stothard
January 29, 2010
Actually, a country that can embrace a person like Haris’ aunt, who fought for another country and alongside a foreign army that invaded Malaya (the Japanese), forgive her this unpatriotic act (some may call her a traitor) that could have gotten her deported in other countries, then allowed her to rise to be a public figure – well, that country can’t be that bad.
And this is my point – citing Mrs Bhupalan’s so-called illustrious history while being derogatory about Dr Mahathir’s roots is not something I would call Haris Ibrahim’s finest moment. When you rake up Dr M’s roots to discredit him in the lowest way possible – questioning whether he is Malay or how long his Malaysian ancestry goes back to – you become just like Dr Mahathir, Ibrahim Ali and all those racist demagogues.
Stick to criticising Dr Mahathir on what he has said and done throughout his life in politics. There is enough meat for you to chew on. Don’t start questioning people’s ethnicity to discredit him or her – because that is when the so-called high ideals you claim in this blog are sullied by the temptation to take cheap, below-the-belt shots in the same way your enemies do.

January 30, 2010
Sheryll,
Actually, no one here say Malaysia is bad, we do blame some people and some ideology, and that is all, don’t presume too much. Someone that work with / against Japanese / British doesn’t suggest he is a hero / traitor as we all know history is written by victor, hence I think what we normally do is to draw an analogy on certain facts / people to substantiate our stand. However the fact remain that Chin Peng is not allowed to come back, the non-Bumi is non-Bumi no matter how you delusion yourselves, fact is fact. (I never say Bumi lead a better life than non-Bumi, I personally think the reverse may be truth, I believe the Bumi policy is actually a scam)
What Mahathir and some other Umno/BN leader did is established through race and religion platform, ideally we all shall learn from you to avoid this subject but would that be too passive from political point of view?
Lastly, I don’t see Haris discredit Mahathir and his roots, he is pointing out a fact.

Harris, best ‘whack’ I have read in years.
Point is, why are people still harping on about this ‘social contract’ thing in the 21st century?
Apartheid by any other name still smells the same.I thought the world had gotten over that. We are slow in catching up.Probably because our heads are still embedded in the sand. Wake up people. We are all equals. Why is everyone so seemingly embroiled in the issue of inequalities as if it were a natural and God given right for one section of the community to be more ‘equal’ than the others? It is the opposite, and ought to be anathematic to any civilized democratic nation…. or maybe we just aren’t one and won’t admit it.

Mahathir is very occupied with his past experiences as a Malaysian Prime Minister and he does felt as if he is still the same. Oh, Oh, this old man is dreaming and slumbering in a bright daylight. However he does sometimes realized and back to his real self as a real Mahathir bin Mohamed Kutty and there he started to shout and murmuring uselessly by remembering the political situation of his only son and hope from Mukhriz, which are a real lame duck after all.
I am wondering, why Mahathir is a Bumiputera, since his father is an Immigrant from Kerala and it is only his mother is a local, whereas there are 2 cases in Sarawak, where both the father are a local Sarawakian Iban and a Malaysian by Nationality and their mother are Chinese, but were denied a Bumiputra Status, but the Indonesian maid were automatically granted a Blue IC and Bumiputra Status.
A real double standard and an abuse of the process of Law indeed !!!!!.

January 29, 2010
Dear Sheryll Stothard
Thank you first of all, for your excellent recount of the part S.C. Bose played in a part of Malaysian history.
May I point out, that it is not Haris who has called his Aunt Rasammah, a freedom fighter, but Wikipedia.
I think that the point Haris is making, and I think only emphasizing rather, again and again, as he has done, countless times, is why after such an excellent track record such as his Aunt’s, as a true Malaysian, she and all of us, the so called non-bumis in this country, even after 52 long years of Independance, with a Supreme Inviolable Constitution,so to speak, are still being denied our equal status, our rights as citizens.
That is the shameful history of this country. For that we have to cry out loud and get angry, both of which are justifiable.
It is as simple as that, we are not arguing the point, about Rasammah Bhupalan’s rightful or wrongful engagement in the INA, or that she did it, because she was innocent and wide-eyed, or as to which country she was fighting for.
Let’s stick to the basics….we non-bumi Malaysians, and you too, are being denied our rights as citizens of this country.
I ask also….in what way is Mahathir Mohammad more important than I. We are both, simply, citizens of this country.
Sheryll Stothard
January 29, 2010
Dear Shakuntala
First of all, Haris cited the Wikipedia note on his aunt as a resume of sorts about her long history of serving Malaysia. So by citing it, he has to “own” the citation, and be responsible for fact-checking everything – even more so, since he’s praising a relative.
Second of all, I have a lot of respect for Mrs Bhupalan – and one would be hard-pressed to find anyone in Malaysia who would have a bad word to say about her.
But let us examine all our own histories and be really honest. It was not just UMNO that was a race-based political party nor was it solely responsible for what we have now inherited in Malaysia today. Our fathers and mothers must have supported the race-based parties of MCA and MIC to some extent, or else there wouldn’t have been an Alliance or Barisan Nasional. We – both Malays and non-Malays – are all culpable for the political reality we have today.
As a young person, Mrs Bhupalan – like many Indians in Malaya then – chose not to stand and fight the Japanese as they unleashed their genocidal actions on the Chinese in Malaya, but instead, saw herself aligned to India. In the same way, the Chinese in Malaya rallied as patriots of China to support General Chang Kai Shek’s efforts against the Japanese in China, before the war reached Malaya’s shores. And most of the Malays stood by and allowed yet another foreign power to walk into Malaya without a fight.
There was no sense of nationhood then. Everyone (not just Malays) thought & acted in narrow racial lines when it came to Malaya, and later, Malaysia’s destiny. It is from this reality that Malaysia was born. We can blame the British, or ourselves, or UMNO, for this, but it doesn’t change the fact that almost everyone in Malaya before Independence subscribed to and supported the raison d’etre of race-based parties. [Except to a degree, the Labour Party and Parti Rakyat – who were then rejected by Malaysians as “communists”]
To address one of your points. I consider myself a citizen of Malaysia, on equal status with bumiputras. No matter how many diatribes about “ketuanan Melayu” I have to listen to or how many laws & policies get twisted around to serve the so-called dominance of one race over another, or even when UMNO thugs hit me on the head while shouting “bawa pendatang ini keluar!” in 1997, I see myself as Equal. My equal status as a Malaysian is not limited to the sum total of “rights” I may or may not have compared to another race. I do not see any First Class Citizens in Malaysia, therefore, I do not consider myself a Second Class one.
And I do not have a “race” to cling to. I don’t fight for any “race” nor do I fight against any race.
And as a citizen of Malaysia, I truly believe that for the well-being & future of this nation, race must be obliterated from the way we govern ourselves, the way we talk about others, the way we fight for our rights, and how we empathise with other Malaysians. We have to be brutal about our own histories, so that we don’t repeat the mistakes of our grandparents and parents.
I don’t expect UMNO, MCA, MIC, Makkal Sakti or any of the race-based parties to start doing this. This is their DNA, and with the right evolution within Malaysia, hopefully, they will become extinct or at least endangered species. But what I do hope for is that those who condemn UMNO should rise above the racist posturing, name-calling and “us-versus-them” arguments.
That is what I would have expected in a blog with “Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia” on it.
If you feel UMNO and the BN have denied you your rights as a citizen of Malaysia, then vote them out. Your one vote is as Equal to the vote of any other Malaysian, Malay or otherwise. And that, no one can take from you, Shakuntala. Except yourself, if you don’t exercise your vote.

Mahatir is surely an indian muslim by malaysian definition. He has always conveniently denied his roots for the simple reason that he could take advantage of the simple malay to achieve his political ambition. Greetings Haris and all.
Firstly, hats off Haris for an eye opener of a posting and I wholly agree, much more needs to be done in recognition of the service and sacrifice Mrs Bhupalan has made for nation.
Also, someone please get hold of MChick and get him to help ward off the senseless myopic attack originating from Kadir Jasin’s blog that has left me baffled.
His protecting his Melayuness strikes me as silly and stupid or is it a full blown caper to achieve mischievous ends ? I suspect equal measures of both but damage is done when ignorant bodoh’s take the bait, not knowing better, only to deny their own history whatever that may be.
Geneology and the study of DNA is not my forte but if you MChick could fire off some salient facts to dispel myth, that would wipe out Kadir Jasin’s stance completely that would in turn make the bodoh’s really bodoh.
Many thanks and regards all out there.

Oh,the Indian-Moslem Mahatir is in the spot again. He is but a pestilent driver always pitting one race against another; one leader against another so much so that he had to be led away and admonished by George Bush in Jarkarta.
The problem with this pseudo-Malay is that his annoying antagonistic nature resides deep in his blood. He can’t sit still and wants to grasp attention giving unsolicited advice and ruffle feathers at every chance trying to inflate his own ego hoping that others would think how great he is or still is! Read “Comparing Mahatirism to Nazism” in MT? See the similarity between him and Hitler in the eyes; Hitler was not a German but an Austrian. Here we have an Indian not a Malay; both are nuisance. Compare their strategies; we now know all of them now.
And do you think he is smart? Then how could he lose billions of our money through mis-management? Or read his own resignation letter written by others and then sank down in tears realizing what a fool he had been?
Bapa Malaysia TAR said he was irresponsible and did not care of the consequence that followed his action; from “Malay Dilemma”, May 13, humiliating TAR, fought the Rulers, the judges, anybody he thought fit to fight against…….we could see TAR was right and how the 22 years of his grip have caused us?
He lied about his ethnicity, knowingly or unknowingly. LKY refused to see him as he could trace his ancestry to Karala but he called himself Malay! He lied about Perwaja Steel, AI’s sodomy (he knew something which the judges didn’t!And the sodomy was committed in an aprtment which was not even been built during the said time!). He taught you to be “Clean, Efficient and Trustworthy” and he went into rampage and became the dirtiest and most corrupted PM in Malaysia’s history without any qualms or conscience of the suffering he would cause to all the Malaysians for generations.
Did he realize that he has lost all credibility in him by lying?? His reputation, if any still left, is naught! Tiger Woods lied and how his credibility sank?
But, this old fool still thinks that Malaysians are stupid and ignorant of his “genocides” on Malaysians and would take any garbage spew from his mouth!
Mahatir is a bygone stubborn, provocative idiot; a has-been. He supported the terrorists and gave them PR. He also created troubles in neighboring countries by giving their insurgents arms. It is only in Malaysia he can still survive till today. He has created burdens to the peoples of Malaysia. He is a curse in Malaysia now. He talked of patriotism, why not he and his sons take out some of their loots and give back to the country for the PM Najib to do development works? If he doesn’t, he is not sincere and he lies again!
He is lucky that in Malaysia, we are not so “militant” as to throw eggs and stinking rubbish at him for inciting hatred amongst the races. But we will remember him and when he dies, I hope somebody would make a status of him in every toll gate so that the drivers can slap and spit at him every time after they have paid their tolls.
I know he doesn’t care as he had said so. But, before that, let us tell him to p***-off and don’t let us hear of him again.

Thank you Haris for revealing the roots our “leaders”. “1Malaysia” is further proven to be just a slogan to veil the populace while they continue their dastardly consolidation to marginalise the already marginalised, polarise the citizenship and betray further those who voted for them with their elitist policies pushing the nation further and further into a dichotomised state of progressive mediocrity.

No “contract” is ever made in Heaven!
Social or whatever. If it was ever made, it’s probably meant to be broken and new ones must dictate, only one day in the future to be broken or renegotiated!

This UMNO led BN Gomen reneges on a black & white, perfectly legal contract between Petronas and Kelantan on the 5% oil royalties.
Now, this ‘great’ guy talks about a social contract which is a figment of UMNO’s imagination.
What is a contract? It is for both sides to give up something to get something else i.e. a compromise. But as we have all witnessed, UMNO and their cronies are always taking and never giving. And they keep coming back for more. This explains why they like signing one-sided contracts. Know what I mean?

And to Katdog, you refer to Social Anthropology, as compared to Physical Anthropology. Whereby, in Social Anthro, once can change “Race”. However, do consider this: Two Africans parents will always bear an African Child, and two Chinese parents will always bear a Chinese child. Thus, establishing the hereditary line of ancestry. Imagine the shock of it all if any one of the Chinese fathers would have if his Chinese wife suddenly gave birth to an African child!?!?! Hence, the absurdity of (alleged) ability to be able to change one’s race !!
Therefore, if you have Caucasoid features (even minute traces), it simply means that you’ve had some Caucasoid blood in your ancestry. Yes, It’s that simple.
There’s a certain cyber-vigilante, who goes by the name of Mak Jun Yeen who also swears by these Social Anthropological definitions, and under that context, and those parameters alone, his discussions would seem valid. Hence, based on his logic, the Hokkiens, the Hainanese, Taiwanese, Americans, and even Singaporeans could claim to be an independent Race based on his arguments. (for very obvious reason, to which I strongly disagree).
To push it one step further, even UMNO could claim to be a RACE of it’s own based on those “purported arguments”.
Try this:
Anyone who believes in Ketuanan, embraces Corruption, and kisses Najib’s feet is of the UMNO Race. So, Mak’s contention is that, as long as they accept him, then he is part of their “race”.
I find this Totally ABSURD !!!
My discussion centers on DNA lineage, which is not to be confused with either one of the former Anthropological definitions; by which, with the testing of Mitochondrial Markers, it is impossible to change one’s ancestry.
Hence, a Rose by any other name….
I also hold on to the fact that there are only 5 Races in the world:
The Caucasoid, The Negroid, The Mongoloid, the Dravidic, and the Austronesian. Any other definition, is thus, just splitting-hairs.
Peace…
Dang, Michael.
Now you’ve gone and got Katdog all confused.

As i mentioned, if we want to talk purely genetics then there is only one race: human.
Your definition of race is merely the generic classification as put forth by researchers by segregating the human population into generic groups based purely on physical features/traits. Who’s to say these are the 5 ‘true’ races in this world?
If a Caucasoid-Negroid has a child together with the Mongoloid-Dravidic then of what race will the child be? A lain-lain? Go back far enough in time, and we are all of one race. So who is drawing the line that defines our race?
As much as you dislike it, the common man’s racial definition will be tightly linked to cultural/historical contexts. Sure, that may not be the ‘correct’ scientific categorization, but unfortunately for you, that’s how people classify themselves when it comes to race. You are welcome to go try and convince a Japanese that he/she is of the same race as the Chinese and that there is no actual Japanese race. While you are at that, try to convince a Chinese of that as well.
Malays have a rich and long history dating back over a thousand years. I think, it is perfectly ok for them to refer to themselves as the Malay race. Why try to deny them that? Its like saying there are only 5 colors in the world and all other colors are but variations of the 5 who is undeserving of being referred to as a unique color.
Let’s recognize the real problem. The problem is the use of the term ‘Malay race’ to confer upon oneself special privileges. Once that happened, everyone then clamored to be classified as one of the favored race. If there were no special privileges, no one would be bothered to debate such trivial issues such as the Malay race.

MC: Dear Katdog. Let me at least start by agreeing with you wholeheartedly before I begin. You wrote:
“…Let’s recognize the real problem. The problem is the use of the term ‘Malay race’ to confer upon oneself special privileges. Once that happened, everyone then clamored to be classified as one of the favored race. If there were no special privileges, no one would be bothered to debate such trivial issues such as the Malay race…”
MC: No problems here at all, ya. So let’s attack this point TOGETHER later yes? I stress TOGETHER, coz I’m really on your side on this one, friend.
“..As i mentioned, if we want to talk purely genetics then there is only one race: human…”
MC: Agreed to a point. Of the 80k Mitochondrial Markers, only a handful would determine physical differences. And a deviance of a mere 2% is all that’s needed between humans and Chimpanzees.
“..Your definition of race is merely the generic classification as put forth by researchers by segregating the human population into generic groups based purely on physical features/traits. Who’s to say these are the 5 ‘true’ races in this world?..”
MC: I didn’t. That’s for sure. On the other hand neither am I the one who insisted on the Ketuanan Bullshit either… So shall we attack the people who assembled this Ketuanan Bullshit together too?
“..If a Caucasoid-Negroid has a child together with the Mongoloid-Dravidic then of what race will the child be? A lain-lain?..”
MC: Yes. If you’ve read what I wrote about Mariah Carey, you would have known that I have (dutifully) classified her as a person of mixed parentage. And in the context of Malaysian silly immigration form, it will be the “lain-lain” category. Can we agree to abolish this category of “Race” and “Religion completely from any such forms? I propose “Malaysian” and “Non-Malaysian” only. Are you with me on this one?
“..Go back far enough in time, and we are all of one race. So who is drawing the line that defines our race?..”
MC: I was seriously hoping you wouldn’t bring this up, because now we’re starting the incestuous issues. In-breeding is a rather lengthy topic by itself already. The idea of “Thoroughbreds” promotes continuous inbreeding. Can we just let this slide for now. Please?
“…As much as you dislike it, the common man’s racial definition will be tightly linked to cultural/historical contexts. Sure, that may not be the ‘correct’ scientific categorization, but unfortunately for you, that’s how people classify themselves when it comes to race..”
MC: so, if I am to understand what you are proposing, am I to understand that you propose that we all should continue with this errata?
“…You are welcome to go try and convince a Japanese that he/she is of the same race as the Chinese and that there is no actual Japanese race. While you are at that, try to convince a Chinese of that as well…”
MC: Aha !! My friend, I have many Japanese Associates who are from all ages, who are extremely quick to acknowledge that they are indeed of the Han-Stock. And if you are aware, the Han is simply a Tribe of the Mongoloid Race. So, to answer your question, Yes, But I had nothing to do with this. I just realized this more than 15 years ago already. Perhaps their China (as in geographical) cousins are less aware of this.
“..Malays have a rich and long history dating back over a thousand years. I think, it is perfectly ok for them to refer to themselves as the Malay race. Why try to deny them that?…”
MC: Ironically, the 280 Million Indonesians of the same genetic-stock do not agree with this “Malay” definition. They still refer to the “Malays”, as a tribe, and not as a Race. And strangely, the 8 million or so Javanese Migrants who crossed the Malaccan Straits suddenly *poof* became one of the “Malay” Race overnight?
“..Its like saying there are only 5 colors in the world and all other colors are but variations of the 5 who is undeserving of being referred to as a unique color…”
MC: Essentially, yes. but not as crudely as that. There’s still Turquoise, Amber, Lilac, Magenta, and many more, to describe colors aside from the primary colors.
EndNote: In seeing that we agree much more than we disagree, can I propose that we forge a path forward TOGETHER which helps to dismantle the Racist Regime which seems to rule this country. Firstly, I propose that all race-based Organizations be dismantled. UMNO being the first. Then MCA, MIC, and so on until all of us can be proud to stand and wave the same great flag of Malaysia in its true glory as it once was, as opposed to the Church-burning, Mongolian-Bombing, Pig-Throwing labels by which all other Nations of the world are laughing and sneering at?
Can I count on you to be with me on this?
Peace…
Michael,
Don’t know about Katdog, but you can have me as your sidekick.

Hey Bro, why la, such inconvenient questions at this time when the old chap is most obviously doing things only a loony bin would do? Like appearing with that other sicko who conned PAS and got himself elected as MP under their ticket! And that sicko’s Perkasa has actually taken its blueprint from Hitler I would suppose because you would see a lot of similarities there. Now, believe me when I say this as I have seen it happen first hand. When a guy begins to loose his marbles, he begins to say and do some very silly things. And finally when he does go over the edge he would only be repeating over and over again, “how can that damn Haris ask me when I became Malay?” And putting two and two together, the family will only see that it was this article of yours that tipped him over!! And sure, as members of the family they’d all be pissed with you, whether or not they are in agreement with him right now as it is. Hey, he is senile man. Am sure those close to him can see it. How else do you explain his recent statements and his presence at Perkasa? But what you wrote can tip him off the edge as I said earlier, then he becomes a medical condition!! I guess Tanjung Rambutan may never have envisaged such a big wig for a stay over client!!

Everyone in Malaysia is trying to claim to be a Malay for reasons best known to themselves!
TDM of Indian origin can be proclaimed a Malay!
Najis of Bugis origin can be proclaimed a Malay!
We also have others such as the famous Toyol who also proclaimed himself a Malay!
And of late, even Chinese like Khoo Kay Kim is also trying to proclaim himself as a Malay!
Looks like being Malay is a valuable “asset”!

Yes, many tried to claim to be Malay to get special privileges. Last year you saw many Indian-Moslems in Penange went publicly to claim to retain “their” Malay rights.
What now if we have decided that Indian-Moslems are not Malay? Will Mahatir and his sons return all the monies they have looted?
Will Mahatir be put to Sg Buloh for inciting racial hatred and speaking rubbish detrimential to the nation’s image?
Will the other irresponsilbe outspoken Mamak be sent there too?
I pity Najib, how he is to promote his 1Malaysia when these Mamak always go against hs grain?

Dear Sheryll
Thank you, for the exchange and the reminder to cast the inevitable VOTE.
It seems to me, that for the very fact our grandparents and parents were not watchful and lost out on opportunities to earn their equality, is a lesson for us to go after our inalienable rights enshrined for us, in the Constitution.
Sheryll, for a better understanding of the worthwhile and brave efforts that the Anak Bangsa Malaysia Initiative is making to obliterate RACE, you have to give yourself the opportunity to watch and listen to what they are doing,to bring about the much needed understanding and unity among the races.
Wouldn’t you want to attend the SABM Ipoh Roadshow for instance, on the 6th of February, this coming Saturday?
You may change your point of view, from being just a citizen…to wanting to be a TRUE CITIZEN of Malaysia.

There is no such thig as the Malay race, in fact going by UMNO logic everyone in this country beginning the so called Malays, the Indians and Chinese are “pendatang.” The only ethnic people of this country are the Orang Asli, and the UMNOputras know it too well, it s Malay word “Orang Asli.” Melayu is derived form the word Melayu in Javanese, which means run away, so simply put Orang Mealy are people who ran away. these are people who are ashamed of their own heritage. The real natives of this country need special attention they are the Natives of Sabah and Sarawak and our orang Asli tribes in the Peninsular. The irony of the whole thing is the majority of these people the real ethnic people are not Muslims, so how did this country become Islamic? And Islam has to be the special feature to make an individual Keralite Muslim a Malay and a Bumiputera. So how did this country become islamic?

Dear brother Harris Ibrahim
We are greateful to you for digging the history
of the OLD medicineman.
I wrote sometime ago that mahathir will not retire
and keep quiet; he is going to beat up a lot of dust. Actually, he is digging his own grave.
If he is a sincere muslim, he can do a lot of
social work to the humanity generally and in particular to the poor muslim throughout the world.
AS A CRIMINOLOGIST, I AM SURE MAHATHIR IS SCARED TO
DEATH AS HE MIGHT BE FEELING THAT WHAT HAPPENDED TO
FORMER DICTATORS, MIGHT HAPPEN TO HIM;
THEREFORE IT IS TIME THAT MALAYSIAN PEOPLE SHOULD FORM A PEOPLES COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE FOR HIS ILLEGAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES; WE HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE FROM VARIOUS SOURCES TO PROSECUTE HIM. WE CANNOT EXPECT THE AG TO DO THE DIRTY JOB AS HE IS THE HENCHMAN OF UMNO.
PRAY THAT MALAYSIA IS SAVED FROM PEOPLE OF HIS
SORT.
PEOPLE SHUOLD ACT QUICKLY AND QUIETLY AND FORM A
PEOPLES COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE THIS GREATMAN
OF MALAYSIA BEFORE HE ESCAPES TO KERALA.
Dr.Hamid Ibrahim
June 24, 2010
DEAR HARRIS IBRAHIM
THERE IS NO WAY MAHATHIR CAN ESCAPE PEOPLES ANGER.
LEGAL LUMINARIES SHOULD GET TOGETHER AND DRAW UP A CHARGE
SHEET ON HIM DETAILING ALL THE CORRUPT AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
MAHATHIR CARRIED ON FROM 1981 UNTIL HE LEFT OFFICE. THERE IS
MORE THAN SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE FOR PROSECUTION OF THIS DICTATOR
SO THAT IT WILL BE A LESSON FOR OTHER FUTURE DICTATORS IN
MALAYSIA.

Dear Sam Haris, Just a couple of questions. With all that is being exposed in the RCI. Can I sue the Govt. of M’sia & Mahathir being the Home Minister (on behalf of my foreign born children with a Malaysian born father) who were denied even a PR after 9 years? Can there be an push for citing Mahathir to be charged with committing treason and all those involved for breaching his fiduciary duties and law breaking ways. How to go about doing this, somebody has to do it, well I am game.
Bhai,
One big problem to your scheme.
You need an independent court to adjudicate over your claim.
Do you see the problem?
