The Majlis Pimpinan Pusat PKR met today.
On the agenda, amongst others, was the re-constitution of the PKR Sabah state leadership.
Azmin’s out.
The PKR division chiefs have made it clear that he’s not wanted.
Have these division chiefs made it clear, then, who their choice is to lead Sabah PKR to face BN at the 13th General Elections?
If there were doubts until today, the fax received at PKR HQ this morning should have put those doubts to rest.
In a fax message addressed to PKR president Wan Azizah, 14 Sabah PKR division chiefs put their signatures to this message, naming just one man as their choice to lead PKR Sabah.
Keningau division chief, Datuk Dr. Jeffery Kitingan, is the choice of the strongest PKR divisions in Sabah.
My source who was at the meeting at Merchant Square today said Anwar made it clear at the meeting that he was not going to have any of this.
“No way in hell will I have Jeffrey as chief”, Anwar is reported to have blasted.
Anwar, it seems, is determined to see a Muslim lead PKR in Sabah because, it is said, he insists that Muslims make up the majority in Sabah.
That may be so, if we take into account the millions of illegal Muslim immigrants granted citizenship during Anwar’s days as DPM to Dr M.
Surely Anwar must know this. His hands are as tainted as that of Dr. M’s with the dilution of the political strength of the indigenous people of Sabah by the influx of Muslim immigrants who were later given citizenship in return for enforced allegiance to BN at the ballot box.
Even if it is true that Muslims now are the majority in Sabah, have we not gone beyond communalist, race-based and religion-orientated politics to that of meritocracy?
Is that not what PKR and Pakatan are supposedly championing?
The decision on the new Sabah PKR state leadership would suggest otherwise, at least as far as PKR is concerned.
I am told that the party leadership will announce that the man given the task to lead PKR in Sabah is Libaran division chief and Sabah PKR state secretary, Ahmad Thamrin Hj Zaini.
My source in Sabah tells me that Thamrin is an Anwar loyalist and his appointment will not go down well with the division chiefs and the PKR grassroots in Sabah.
Worse, I’m told that this man is a race and religious bigot.
Speaking to a division chief who is Muslim but is supportive of Jeffrey as PKR state chief, Thamrin is said to have asked of that division chief, “Kamu sudah masuk ugama Kristian, ke?”.
Malaysiakini reports today that Sabah Peoples Progressive Party (SAPP) has rejected overtures to get them to join the anticipated formalised and registered Pakatan Rakyat coalition, if it ever materialises.
Yong Teck Lee, SAPP president, gave as reasons for this, that SAPP sees little difference between BN and the proposed opposition alliance and noted that “Pakatan in Sabah still took orders from Kuala Lumpur and this apparently made it impossible for Sapp to be a member of the opposition alliance”.
“We have no intention whatsoever of joining Pakatan Rakyat. It will be against our struggle to win back the autonomy of Sabah and prevent the federal government from continuing to interfere in Sabah affairs”, Yong said.
All of this leads to three questions and one message for Anwar.
First, how the *#@* did you ever dream of taking the federal government last September 16th, apparently counting on the support of Sabah and Sarawak when, it would seem, you haven’t a clue of how to win the hearts and minds of their locals, leaders or otherwise?
Second, is your ‘Ketuanan Rakyat’ any less sloganeering than Najib’s ‘1Malaysia’? Is it from the heart or just skin deep?
Third, are you truly the changed man from your UMNO days, or are you now a closet Malay nationalist, because you see it as politically expedient?
The message.
I want to repeat here something I had said in my letter to Anwar on 18th August last year.
“On Black 14, I heard you use the phrase ‘Ketuanan Rakyat’ for the first time.
Do not waver from this.
End race politics.
End the politicisation of Islam.
You must be brave enough to tell the Malays that this country belongs to all the anak-anak Bangsa Malaysia, to remind the Malays again and again that UMNO’s ketuanan Melayu is unIslamic and has been their evil tool to enrich themselves and divide this nation.
Do this, and be assured of the strongest support from the majority of anak-anak Bangsa Malaysia who, by far and large, are decent people.
…A final reminder.
The rakyat today are not like that of 16 years ago.
We understand national issues better, we are better informed, and we have a greater sense of commitment to the ideals of justice and equality.
And we have a newly found self-belief to pursue these ideals and to pursue change.
Understand and remember that we are no longer afraid.
We fully understand today that governance of this nation was intended to be in the hands of the people, and that when you and your party leaders offer to govern, it is with a view to serve us.
Therefore, understand and remember that it is we, the rakyat, who govern through those who have taken oath to serve us.
It is only by abiding by that oath that you might honourably be called a leader of men.
Any less and you would have proven yourself to be no better than those whom you now endeavour to displace”.

RIGHT ON! Are PKR members UMNO members in PKR clothings?
If we start to dismantle race and religion from politics, Malaysia and the world will be wonderful place to live in.

Dear Haris,
If what you say is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, then it is the sad end of the PKR or is it pkr. If you do have the avenue to Bro Din, it might be a good idea to intimate to him what your thoughts are to see if what Anwar,s thoughts are real or is he playing to the East Malaysian gallery. The more crap we get from the BN clowns,it makes me sad that all we did for the 12th GE was all in vain, backing the wrong horse.

This thing called race still features very prominently here. From the ordinary people right up to the leaders of both govt and opposition. Comments from your readers to your earlier post on the appointment of Baru to head PKR Sarawak also drew many comments that a minority should not lead the majority.
I’m really sad to read of this and I’m almost resigned to the fact that it may take another 50 years before the country moves away from race, color or creed and begins to recognise people for who they really are. When will we ever begin to accept that if the minority is an able and trusted leader, he should then be given the mandate to lead.
Is there really meaning in all that you are trying to do, in Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia ? Will we be a voice in the wilderness, finding support from opposition leaders when it is convenient for them, but otherwise it remains a rhetoric ?
Really Haris, what is your take on this ?
Joan,
We in the SABM initiative do not delude ourselves that the change of ‘One People, One Nation’ that we desire will come overnight.
It requires the concerted effort of all who want to see this change become a reality.
My friends and I have begun the first baby steps in that long journey.

Interesting read Bro,
Politicians throughout history have tried to solve every problem conceivable to man, always failing to recognize that many of the problems we face result from previous so-called political solutions. Government cannot be the answer to every human ill. Continuing to view more government as the solution to problems will only make matters worse.
Believing we have perfect knowledge of God’s will, and believing government can manage our lives and world affairs, have caused a great deal of problems for man over the ages. When these two elements are combined they become especially dangerous.
Liberty, by contrast, removes power from government and allows total freedom of choice in pursuing one’s religious beliefs. The only solution to controlling political violence is to prohibit the use of force to pursue religious goals and reject government authority to mold the behavior of individuals.
One of the major reasons we’ve drifted from the Founders’ vision of liberty in the Constitution was the division of the concept of freedom into two parts. Instead of freedom being applied equally to social and economic transactions, it has come to be thought of as two different concepts. Some in Congress now protect economic liberty and market choices, but ignore personal liberty and private choices. Others defend personal liberty, but concede the realm of property and economic transactions to government control.

wow, you got good insight. The PKR leadership is given to a Muslim and we guess that Anwar is adamant in his choice. That is really bad considering that many of these Muslims are not the real orang asal but were given the citizenship. The small cuppa is the Jeffrey is heading a task force. It is what we called a belgian compromise

It would be absolutely disappointing if the reason for Jeffery Kittingan not being picked to lead is because Anwar or anyone else wants a Muslim to lead. And for Anwar to suggest that Sabah has more Muslims, is nothing but wickedly mischievous. I have driven from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat and along the way, maybe for every 10 churches you may see a single mosque. Fair enough the mosque alone will stand grand and made of brick and mortar whereas the churches would be wooden structures. But that does not give you more Muslims does it? And even if there are more Muslims, so what? Why be such a bigot?

it is become obvious that pakatan rakyat is no different than barisan national. sabah and sarawak will be in the same malay ultra mentality with propaganda twist. tunku abdul rahman made lots of promises and signed autonomy agreement to ensure sabah and sarawak support to malaysia federation. again, we see those same kind of promises made by anwar. we never will know if those promised by the pakatan rakyat leadership will be fulfill or kept. they even broke the promises when we had a black and white, how can we trust the empty mouth promises?
pakatan rakyat = (pkr + dap + pas) is not the solution and way to ensure the past promises be kept. sabah and sarawak had those leverage many years ago but greedy local assemblyman take it away just like that. now, we need some new agreement if anyone want get sabah and sarawak support. to achieve this is not easy. sabah and sarawak has to work together and form their own independent and equal coalition without the influences from the malaya.
sabah and sarawak should rise their stake hold more higher instead of giving all of the decision to the malaya MPs to decide. we should have equal chance to govern and lead the country within the existed constitution without the malay worried about their rights and so on. if the malay want us to trust them to govern the country, can they trust sabah and sarawak bumiputra non muslim to govern malaysia because they are also native by rights and have the same definition as the malay?
the central government that mainly occupied by the malaya MPs has influence the social and economic development of sabah and sarawak states. sabah and sarawak has no say about what being decided at malaya states. how can this one way direction can be allowed to happen for such a long time?
now, it is a right time for sabah and sarawak to get a new deal due to the political support shift in malaya. if we get a good deal, there will be no need to demand for the out dated federation agreement. i believe it is not easy to achieved but if sabah and sarawak didn’t take this opportunity, we never know when this opportunity will come again.

That was the problem I think lies with the whole system. Early this year PKR passed a motion to amend its constitution, to so called “democratize” the party by allowing the members to vote for their leaders directly, but only in the central level.
I personally do not think it makes a party any better by allowing “direct election”. The same goes to the UMNO’s constitution amendment to increase number of voters. I don’t think it is any effective or better.
With all these exotic hoo-haas, often enough people forgot to ask, what about local/state leadership? To my knowledge, only DAP and Gerakan (I’m not sure about PPP and East Malaysian parties) allow election for state leadership. Appointment of state leadership of UMNO, MCA, PKR, Pas and etc are all done by the central leadership.
I don’t know which way is better.

Suraya,
Haris Ibrahim comes strong because he is passionate about ground up politics and democratic politics.I respect him and am in touch with him. But Haris knows that PKR (and Pakatan Rakyat) is still the best hope for Malaysia and by the way, we were the first political party to endorse his People’s Declaration and PKR has not abandoned that commitment.
I know Dr Jeffrey Kittingan and Ansari. Let us not judge them too harshly. Both men are committed to the struggle for change. They are professionals in their own right with very strong views. But as men of maturity and reason, they have learned to compromise. The appointment of Dr Kittingan as coordinator of the newly formed National Integration Council was made with the full knowledge of Ansari.
On Dato Seri Zahrain, I think the party wants him focus on his parliamentary duties. He has still direct access to Anwar Ibrahim as part of his inner circle of advisers and associates at Party Headquarters.
Dr. Mansor Othman is the logical choice to take over as PKR Chief for Penang, a position he held before. He is now Deputy Chief Minister 1, which will be helpful to the party machinery. Again, I suggest we should read too much into this change which was announced by Dato Seri Wan Azizah yesterday. BTW, the change in Penang was made in consultation with Dato Seri Zahrain himself.–Din Merican

I can see that Anwar has not change a bit. Still trying to exploit Sabah and impose his umno streak of ‘ketuanan melayu’. This Muslim thing in Sabah don’t work well with the locals because we don’t vote or live that way.
Anwar thinks more about the illegal immigrants than the local population.
If Jeffrey is bright, he and rest of his supporters should leave PKR now and join other local-based opposition parties. PKR will never make it in Sabah whith Anwar’s approach.

What charm has Zulkifli Nordin over Anwar that he is so shy to rebuke or discipline this turkey? Anwar is very eloquent in his speech and writing but is very lacking in the visibility of his actions. Until and unless Anwar starts to walk the talk, he will be perceived as a charlatan.
Now another problem has arisen in Sabah and Anwar is exhibiting his ineptness as a visionary leader. While the Pakatan is burning down, Anwar is too busy cultivating a different constituency overseas. What the heck is Anwar so enamoured with his upscale foreign clienteles that he has totally abandoned to nurture his fledging child at home? In the meantime there is quarelling, plotting and stabbing galore among his coalition partners and also within his own party and no actions were taken to steer the Pakatan into the right path.
If this situation still persists up to the end of 2009 and Anwar is still fiddling with his new passion then let Pakatan be buried and a new party without any racial baggage be formed sans Anwar.

Lest said the better as it would really dissapoint Dr. Jeffrey’s supporters and promoters. As for Ahmad Thamrin, that is an obvious blunder by DSAI. PKR is fast losing its appeal to Sabahan not because Dr. Jeffrey or Ansari or any current Liaison leadership was not appointed as the Head of the Liaison nor is it loosing its appeal because Ahmad Thamrin had been appointed, IT IS LOOSING ITS APPEAL as its promise to bring change brought nothing at all! Why can’t DSAI just get it, take in new and fresh untainted people! Make them leaders but of course check their background, whether they fit be leaders or just Starbucks politicians! You have very little time DSAI as Yong Teck Lee and Bernard Dompok have seen the opportunity gap that you left for the opposition in Sabah. SAPP and UPKebangsaanO will only play with the non-muslims and team up with the remnants of USNO vis a vis UMNO Sabah and that PKR will go to oblivion. The direction and outcome of the Sabah “crisis”, is expected to have strong repercussions well beyond Sabah borders.
For one, a critical issue like this tests the very fundamentals of the struggle of the national KeAdilan, for consistency on both sides of the South China Sea.
Since the federal contest between BN and Pakatan may be critically decided by the electoral allegiance of Sabah and Sarawak, either side will have to convincingly demonstrate that it is best able to meet the just aspirations of the people of the 2 states.
The national leadership of KeAdilan is now keenly watched on both sides of the South China Sea for its wisdom to make some crucial moves which may well decide not just the electoral outcomes in Sabah, but that of the struggle for national reform.
