Malaysiakini reports today that the friends of the recently deceased, Lawrence Selvananthan, alleged by the Negri Sembilan Islamic religious authorities to have converted to Islam 3 days before he died, decided to take matters in their own hands.
Aware that there was this legal tussle between the family of the deceased and the religious authorities as to whether Lawrence be buried according to Islamic or Catholic rites, they took his body to Segamat, had the remains cremated, and the ashes buried.
And, so it seems, all hell has broken loose.
Frankly, I don’t blame the friends of Lawrence.
Since the Everest Climber case, in 2005, culminating in the dismissal by the Federal Court of the application for leave to appeal at the instance of the widow, it has become evident that there is no judge in our civil courts, from the lowest rung to the highest court, that has the courage to abide by their oath of office.
When the citizenry lose confidence in the institutions that were set up to protect them, they will take the law into their own hands.

Muslims should be more concerned about the living issues that are aplenty and in chaos rather than the dead

Yes, Haris, I also do not blame them. In fact, I’m so glad for the deceased Lawrence and his immediate family. If they had not done so, I’m willing to bet my bottom dollar that the Islamic authorities will have him buried in an Islamic burial ground. So tragic that Malaysia has come to this, that its citizen has to take laws into their own hands…

This will happen again and again when we have religious zealots! If I’m in their shoes, I would do the same thing too! That’s what friends are for, even when you are gone.
I could imagine how distraught Lawrence’s family was with the intruding policemen in the midst of their mourning. Damn! Don’t these policemen have a heart?
Haris, I lost count the no# of times this insane body-snatching episode but correct me if I’m wrong that most of the deceased are Indians? Is it a coincidence or are they often at the receiving ends of such impunity?
Now, if this madness doesn’t stop, perhaps we, non-Muslim Malaysians would be wise to mention the religious rites we want to have before we breathe our last breath? Don’t know whether pun was intended here!

Giving the Islamic religious authorities the maximum benefit of the doubt, I would say that perhaps they acted out of a sense of religious obligation. Perhaps they felt it was incumbent upon them to see that their (claimed to be) brother Muslim be buried according to what they believe to be the Islamic way.
I am by no means an Islamic authority, but I would hazard an opinion that surely Islam does not dictate being insensitive to the feelings of the deceased’s family.
There is also the matter of some adopting the stance that their actions as Muslims supercede the protests of the non-Muslim family. Better-than-thou.
If Malaysia is ever to become truly united, there is much real leadership and honest effort needed. But the way so many of our useless polticians spew divisive words and fan sentiments to booster their claims to champion certain segments of society… the reverse is what is prevalent.

The only reason I can think of for body-snatching would be the personal assets of the deceased. ALL non-Muslim family members & relatives would not be entitled to these assets, never mind even an authenticated will. If there are no claimants, these assets go the the local Muslim authority.
Haris, do tell if I am wrong.
Thanks.

Can PR handle one at a time.
Prove their Kebajikan ( PAS for All ) a success, I believe Hudud would naturally be accepted if they can prove Negara Berkebajikan Islam is about fairness and Justice.
Hudud must be something better then.
The rakyat ( non-muslims ) must be convinced to Hudud not scared the Hell of of them.

Why is Islam practices so different from Islam practices in other parts of the Islamic countries ? Also why are the deceitful and corrupted Umnoputras so afraid that Malaysian muslims will convert to other religions and as a result they have legislations not only to forbid muslims wishing to convert to other religions ? Is this how they keep the muslim population becoming bigger and bigger ? Is this what Najib is calling Malaysia has the best democracy in the world ? What a joke and just remember self praise is no praise at all !

Why do the Muslim authorities in this country continue to entertain secret conversions? Are conversions to Islam so repulsive that it has to be kept secret? If it is something to be celebrated, then surely waiting another few hours or days should not be a problem. During which time the immediate families of the person intending to convert can be properly informed!
There is this brutal fact that deals with the the properties of the deceased. Surely now the Muslim authorities will cease it! Has all this secrecy got to do with that? Property? Surely not!! It is about time non-Muslim authorities, whether religious or non-religious authorities insist that any kind of conversion at all become valid only upon certain processes being fulfilled. Amongst this must be the official notification of the intention to convert to family members. A facility to object or to provide for family members to make a claim of assets and properties if this is material. Surely the good Lord up there can wait for all this to happen before he claims one more for Himself isn’t it?

Haris where is your article that says there should be a referendum and if majority agree to have hudud then it shall be. But you would quietly leave the country. No, no referendum for that would be the tyrany of the majority plus unfair to Sabah and Sarawak who would not have joined the Federation of Malaysia. You must continue to resist
