The Malayalees Of Penang
Thanks to The Star and its feature The Penang Story for the information.
Malayalees are a southern Indian people from the
Indian province of Kerala, west of Tamil Nadu.
They are perhaps India’s most multi-religious community, and possess the religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Malayalees, and Tamils, have long traded with Malaysia’s kingdoms of Kedah and Johor. Some ancient Malayalee and Tamil traders even married into Kedah and Johor royalty.
Malayalees, together with Tamils and Arabs, were instrumental in bringing Islam to Malaysia. After all, Kerala was India’s first Muslim province.
European colonialists, however, played a key role in boosting Malayalee migration to Malaysia. When the Portuguese conquered Melaka in 1511, they were joined by soldiers recruited from Kerala.
Some of Penang’s earliest Muslim teachers or Ulama from the Indian community were undoubtedly Malayalees and they included Fakir Melana whose tomb is in Datuk Keramat, George Town.
Syed Mustapha Idris or Datuk Koya was a respected religious teacher from the Malayalee community. He was also a much-loved humanitarian who helped the poor and sick, regardless of race or faith.
Narayana Pillai was an important Malayalee community leader and businessman in George Town. He migrated to Singapore shortly after the British acquired the island from the Sultan of Johor, and became an important contractor there.
Malayalee and Tamil Muslims frequently intermarried and thus, it is uncommon to find a purely Malayalee Muslim or purely Tamil Muslim in the island, and Malaysia, today.
Abdul Kadir Merican, a respected Indian Muslim leader of Tamil-Malayalee ancestry, established one of George Town’s most beloved mosques, the Kapitan Kling Mosque, named in his memory.
Kadir, who married a Kedah princess, was the patriarch of Malaysia’s illustrious Merican family which included as its members Malaysian Frank Sinatra Datuk Ahmad Daud, his actress and singer daughter Fauziah Ahmad Daud (Malaysia’s Jodie Foster and female Simon Cowell), First Lady of Malaysian Theatre Datuk Faridah Merican, Health Ministry Director-General Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican and composer Datuk Ahmad Merican.
Another famous Malayalee contractor was Ibrahim Kaka who built the George Town police headquarters in Penang Road.
He also built houses in Cheeseman Road, Hussain Road and Taylor Road, as well as the Penang UMNO headquarters in Zainal Abidin Road (formerly Jewish Road).
The UMNO headquarters was officiated by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister and ardent Penang fan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.
The Malayalees of Penang were known as daring construction workers. They played a key role in the completion of the Penang Hill railway in George Town, as well as the city’s Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple and Kebun Nyor Methodist Church.
Kaka’s contemporaries in the construction business included V. K. Ismail, T. A. Omar and B. Ismail.
P. K. Nambyar, a Malayalee from George Town, became the first president of the Malaysian Indian Association, formed in Taiping, Perak, in 1906. He was Malaysia’s first Indian lawyer.
He also founded the Penang Indian Association. Nambyar Road in George Town is named after him.
Nambyar’s son Dr N. K. Menon was actively involved in the Indian National Army formed by Subhas Chandra Bose of Bengal, to fight for India’s independence.
Menon also served in the George Town Municipal Council and headed the British Medical Association of Malaysia.
Nambyar’s son-in-law N. Raghavan, who also led the Penang Indian Association, was a prominent lawyer, and a founder of the Central Indian Association of Malaysia (CIAM) headed by Datuk Ernest Emmanuel Clough Thuraisingam.
Perhaps, the most famous Malayalee to land in George Town was Iskandar Kutty, a merchant who married a Johor-Riau wife Siti Hawa Iskandar.
They became the proud parents of Alor Star’s top public school Sultan Abdul Hamid College’s founder-principal and Kedah’s royal educator Datuk Mohamad Iskandar.
Mohamad was the school teacher of Tunku Abdul Rahman.
He and his wife Datin Wan Tempawan Wan Hanafi from the Kedah Bendahara’s (Prime Minister’s) clan, were the proud parents of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s Father of Modernisation and fourth Prime Minister.
And contrary to popular belief, pulled tea or teh tarik and roti canai or Tamil unleavened bread are Malayalee dishes, not Tamil ones.

Mahathir was born in Alor Star, the capital of the northern Malaysian state of Kedah,[6] the youngest of nine children[7] of a schoolteacher and a housewife. His father, Mohamad Iskandar, was of half-Indian origin, being the son of a Malayalee Muslim (who migrated from Kerala) and a Malay mother, while Mahathir’s own mother, Wan Tampawan, was Malay.[8]

Haris,
This clown of a Doc, was one helluva opportunist – when crossed the Johor causeway on his way to Malays University (now NUS) to do his medicine, he miraculously transformed himself to become “Indian”. When he crossed back, his genes mutated to become Malay.
You don’t believe, just go and check at the NUS archives.
We have a mutant at the helm of the country – that’s why he doesn’t croak. Dang man – I think I’ll croak before him.

Haris,
Let’s forget about this has-been Kutty fellow although he’s always good for a laugh. Let’s get back to the real business at hand – the Batang Ai by-election.
With Nizar’s candidacy, Bukit Gantang is practically in hand. PDRM may have won Bukit Selambau for PR with their tear gas and water cannons. But Batang Ai is still in doubt.
Batang Ai is a supremely important battlefield. It’s a David vs. Goliah battle and a victory by David will sound the death knell for the corrupt Taib dynasty.
PKR’s victory in Batang Ai will send political shockwaves throughout the state and set the momentum for the fall of the BN state government. It is a battle for the soul of Sarawak.
Let not one Kutty divert us. We need more ground reports from Batang Ai, Haris.
Isn’t RPK joining you guys? He seems pretty ‘lost’ these days.

Before all this information about Mahathir is of Mangliali race, I was told by a mangliali friend that he swears by his god Mahathir is the same race. Likewise this same friend also gave me information regarding the Altantuya case when the news first surface, about two half years ago. He told me that the real person behind the crime is Rosmah and the reason for the cruel use of explosive was because she was pregnant with Najib’s baby. This information about her pregnancy only now just surfaced on the net, and of course that time I didn’t think what was told was the whole truth(exagerated) But now one by one is coming up in the news as what I have been told. I asked him how he got all the information, he says reliable source from inside.

We are an immature lot! Not wanting to admit being of certain race. you can lie/ hide your heritage but what good does that do? Be it youre of indian, malay or chinese origin, why does it embarass you? A man cannot know where he is going unless he is aware of where he came from. Seems to me that we are ashamed to be associated with the darker skin. Are we that superficious? Easy for an Albanian or Indonesian to get IC but let a Bangladeshi or Indian muslim try…fat chance. Same religion different colour. Hypocrates. The most vile of people are whose who profess the faith, treat their brethen worst than they treat the so called infidels! And Mahathir Mohammed did not even have the courtesy to tell the people he governed at the time, of this great attribute and contribution of his grandfather. Shame on you, Dr. Mahathir Muhammed !!!!Fancy having had an Indian grandfather whose revered name was…Iskander Kutty and you never gave him credit? Were you ashamed of being part Indian? Can’t you see the uniqueness of being a Malay?
I have many friends whom are of mixed marriage ( Malay+Chinese) ( Mamak + Malay ) (Jawa + Baba/Nyoya) ( Patani + Minang ) ( Aceh + Kadazan) ( Arab + Rawa ) ( Irish + malay ) etc
They adopt many of the malay various cultures, language and most important, religion as a unifying factor.
How can this hybrid race now be labelled racist?
I think you have failed to understand the CONCEPT of being Malay.
It does not really matter where ones forefathers comes from. Its the unifying idea.
This is where people like Mahathir and the Mericans, Syeds etc embrace the Malay concept on this land and move on with this culture, regardless whom their forefathers. You wont see Mahathir wearing white sarong like his father.
And you think he need to be in touch with his distant relatives? You obviously do not know him at all.
Of course there are malays who end up being more British than the English or Scotish…surprised?

Dear Haris,
I just can’t see the need to even insult Tun Mahathir anymore. Does it give you/us satisfaction in knowing Mahathir’s ancestry was Indian ? Like mine was Chinese, yours Ceylonese etc. The point is that we have to, at some stage, move forward and just let him be.
Do you think he hated being called an Indian descent? Given how the Indians have let themselves be fooled by Samy Vellu for the past 30 years, I’d be ashamed to call myself an Indian if I’m one.
And to my Chinese/Indian brothers, don’t hate Mahathir when it’s your Samy/Ling/Lim etc who have been swindling your community..Assume a bit of responsibility and admit that you all have been stupid enough to give them your support rather then blame Tun Mahathir. If it’s not you directly then your father, mother, uncle, cousins etc have been stupid for believing Tun M scare-mongering about racial imbalance etc and continually to be supportive of MCA/MIC/Gerakan etc!
I think dear Haris, rather then gloat on Mahathir’s Indianness, we’d be better off figuring out how to win GE13. Each in our own way.

Your question on why someone would try to be more MALAY than an AUTHENTIC MALAY is an interesting one.
My view is that it’s because the person who tries to be someone other than himself/herself is suffering from an inferiority complex because he/she is ashamed of who he/she is, or it is a tactical ploy used manipulatively to gain control/power over others by making these others feel inferior and so, inadequate in some way in themselves.
It is a classic tactic used by power-hungry authoritarians/fascists and also other attention seekers. The tactic gives the impression that these attention seekers are somehow, far superior beings to others who are then “made” to look and feel and so get treated like “lesser mortals”.
Ultimately, it is just about YOU allowing others to make you feel small/inferior.
And why should anyone feel inferior if you know who you are? Or what you stand for? Or where you will go and just as importantly, where you will NOT go?
You should never feel bad about yourself because of someone else’s inferiority/superiority/supremacy complex. Nor should you ever change yourself because of someone else’s bad behaviour and bad manners.
Mahathir is simply an arch psychologist and a smart and shrewd, but very cheap, politician who excels in gaining control/power over others by manipulating and belittling them, instead of being the national leader he claims to be. Had he been a true national leader, he would have supported and helped to build up the nation and her people so that they could ALL be self-confident individuals who could fend for and stand up for themselves without the helpless support of belittling, debilitating and unnecessary psychological crutches.
And that action done long ago where he deliberately chose to employ a Chinese chauffeur to drive him around is very telling of his psychological deficit need to lord it over others who he, consciously or unconsciously, considers to be in some way “superior to him”.

Dear Burstaxon,
Friend, I think you missed Haris’s point. You need to read the Doc’s speech about Malays being dispossessed (which we know can never take place, so the Doc was fanning the fires of racial distrust and hatred for others, including Indians) and his diatribe against others. Then you’ll see how relevant this posting is about being our true selves. Because if we pretend to be what we are not, we are deceiving others.

Well, I am ok enough to admit that I benefitted from NEP. I got picked out from a kampung to a Malay dominated boarding school then subsequently Uni and even later overseas for my education. I doubt that my parents can afford to do so. Being a grateful person I am, I would like to thank UMNO& Tun for that.
Problem is that UMNO has long gone.
Maybe I missed Haris’s point but you cant still take away the fact it was the Indian and Chinese ‘protectors’ who have let Malaysian of their ethnic group down. Not Mahathir.

Bursataxon:
I would like to respond to what you said here.
“Well, I am ok enough to admit that I benefitted from NEP…..Being a grateful person I am, I would like to thank UMNO& Tun for that.”
I think we can all agree that the NEP was designed to help the less fortunate/well-off Malaysians irrespective of RACE/ETHNICITY/RELIGION, so I am pretty sure that every Malaysian is very happy that the NEP has helped you to get out of the human potential destroying violence of the poverty trap that so many are, unfortunatey, still in today in Malaysia after over fifty years of independence.
The NEP, which is a social justice engineering policy tool, is funded by all Malaysian taxpayers through their taxes and their common equity wealth in the nation, so I think there is no need for you as a citizen/taxpayer to feel so indebted or overly “grateful” to the politicians who were elected by the People and put there into power to enable that policy to come into existence and practice.
So what the elected politicians did was merely part of their public roles as defined in their job specifications.
And as the collective taxpayers pay (through their noses it seem) for those privileged public jobs to be carried out, why should you, a Malaysian citizen and taxpayer who elected those public servant officials into those privileged roles, feel so obligated and “grateful” to these public servant employees? And especially when these public servants appear to have made a complete pig’s ear of the NEP policy through their sordid corruption and porcine greed?
“Maybe I missed Haris’s point but you cant still take away the fact it was the Indian and Chinese ‘protectors’ who have let Malaysian of their ethnic group down. Not Mahathir.”
Although I do agree with you that some of those who were supposedly there to represent certain ethnic groups did not in fact do so, Mahathir being Malaysia’s Prime Minister, and chief honcho of the BN coalition, should have risen above unprincipled, shabby behavior and so ought not to have enabled or allowed such unacceptable and unethical discriminatory practices to be wielded against Malaysians by anyone, including those in UMNO, MCA, MIC and other lesser political cohorts.
“If cursing Mahathir can make the country better then go ahead by all means.”
Yes, you are absolutely right. Merely cursing Mahathir now can’t turn back the hands of time and make the country better just like that or make up the losses for all those who undeservedly lost out under his discriminatory iron-rule policies.
But hopefully, it might make some think or even stop to take a reality check about what really went on in those twenty-two long and socially destructive years, and then maybe learn some wisdom from that experience so that the going forwards, the Malaysian People will never again allow someone as destructive as Mahathir to come into power and ride roughshod over them and their nation’s Constitution ever again.
