Pak Lah and his merry men want to make sure Rashid runs one more election for them.
Yes, the next election that we are expecting any time soon.
Rashid is due to retire on 31st December, 2007.
The move to extend Rashid’s term for another year could mean either that the elections will only be held next year or if before the end of this year, then Rashid is still needed to helm the EC if and when there are petitions to challenge any election results.
Pak Lah is pushing for a constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age to 66.
There they go again, messing about with our constitution for their own ends.
On 20th November, 2007, bodoh! bodoh! bodoh! tabled the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2007 in Parliament for its first reading. This bill seeks to extend the retirement age of EC members to 66.
The bill is scheduled for the second and third reading on 11th December, 2007.
Kim Quek has written an excellent piece on this disgraceful move to tinker with the constitution. It appears in Malaysiakini and you can read it HERE.
On the day scheduled for the second and third reading of the bill, BERSIH is planning a gathering outside Parliament at 11am to call on parliamentarians to vote against the bill.
What can we do now?
Click HERE. This is a link to all the details of the MPs.
Find the postal address or e-mail details of your MP.
Write to your MP now and tell him or her that you want him to vote against the amendment bill. Tell your MP that you will check Hansard to make sure that if he or she speaks during the second and third reading of the bill, that he or she speaks against the bill. Remind your MP that he or she is there to represent you and not the party. Tell your MP that how he or she votes on this bill will determine how you will vote in the coming elections. Tell your MP that you want a new chairman of the EC.
Send a copy of your letter to your MP to thepeoplesparliament@gmail.com
I will collate all such letters so that we will all know which MP has been directed by their constituents on this important issue and who from amongst them abided by this direction.
People, you walked the talk on 10-Eleven.
It’s time to walk the talk again.
You are up to it.
I know you can.

Dear Haris, thanks a million. Malaysia certainly needs more people like you! I too will be urging my friends to write to the MP of their cinsituencies regarding this issue. Problem is, me and my friends are all under 21.
I believe that the MPs still have a duty to listen to us, and that we have a right to tell them what to do even though we are not of voting age. However, im wondering, for young people in the same situation as me, what can we do to be taken seriously in this case. Whats to stop the ‘wakil parti’ from dissmissing us simply because we wont be able to vote in this coming election.
PS im over 18!
You have parents, relatives and friends who will vote, right?
Tell your MP not to presume that your friends and relatives will not be influenced by you.

This is probably the MOST important effort of all. The tipping point.
If there is any serious effort to stop the rot in Malaysia, it has to start from SPR. People like Rashid HAS TO BE REMOVED.
SPR must be made a truly independent body – unlike now which is a tool used by the corrupt BN to rob the nation from the voice of the people of many color.
It is no longer a nation of the people, by the people and for the people. Democracy in Malaysia is currently a nation of the BN, by the SPR, for the CORRUPT.
There can never be a democratic and peaceful reform via the ballot box as long as SPR is still a tool of UMNO and gang. The sin of SPR is more than those of Nazris, Fairuz and the rest of the mammals of same type for it was SPR that handed over this country’s fate to them via cheating.
Nazri and Khairy kept on talking about ballot boxes on AlJazeera. This… is their Achilles’ heel. The final and last lame excuse they can fall back to justify their actions and words. They claim to be the voice of the people.

Is it possible for me to change my constituency for voting on time for the next elections? I inquired at a post office and was told it will take 3 months for a reply, etc!
I hardly know my present MP and by the look of things my vote will not make much impact there but God willing may in my present constituency, hence the hurry!
I hate myself for being so lethargic about it!!
celia,
My advise is to not change constituency right now.
You have not stated which constituency you are presently in. Why not get a group within your present constituency to go see the present MP, register your unhappiness, find out what his or her views are on those issues, and then decide whether you want to retain this MP or to vote for change.
If its change that you want, come back to this blog and we will see how we can try to initiate an effort to bring abou that change.

Can anyone forward a sample of good letter so that everyone can use it? TQ. It will make all our lives easier.
NTBN,
I deliberately did not put up a template because I want you people to start taking the trouble to put this country in order and not wait to be spoon fed.
Eric Lim from Seputeh has sent a letter to his MP. It is up in the page entitled ‘Letters to MPs directing a vote to oppose the Rashid bill’. If you need a sample to follow, I think Eric’s will do.

I would love to write to my MP.
Unfortunately Datuk Sothinathan of Teluk Kemang did not list his email address.
Also, I’m just curious as to how someone from out of state is able to contest a seat in another area…
Why can’t we just get locals who know the plight of the people in that particular area ?
Niraj,
Send it to his postal address. I checked and its there.
I take the view that an MP looks after national policy and national laws passed. Local issues should be looken into by local councillors.
For these reasons, I do not think it is inappropriate for some who is not from the constituency standing for the parliamentary seat.
I agree, though, that a local would be preferred as voters would have a better chance of getting to know the person and his suitability.

Harris, a uuestion though.
Even if we succeeded in removing those dogs, we can’t be sure that not the same species will replace them can we?
This is BN’s kingdom. In fact i feel sad for Agong, losing power day after day. I would suggest restoring a monarch system, just like in Brunei and UAE.
hitman,
If we succeed in removing the present leaches, surely we can be careful about who we replace them with.
That is why I am pushing the ‘Get to know your MP’ initiative.
That involves getting to know your present MP. Don’t like him or her, then look at what opposition have to offer. Don’t like those as well, search for one and field our own candidate.
A lot of work?
Yes.
Who said taking ownership and responsibility of our country was going to be easy?
Not prepared to undertake this sort of work?
Then be prepared to live with your present MP,however good or bad.

The Rakyat must unite and make sure Rashid’s retirement is not extended. Let us change his name to “Last Shit” to be cleansed from the Election Commission. This is our duty to protect our Constitution, and ensure that true democracy continue to flourish as willed by the Rakyat.

Haris,
I’m sorry to say this but I do not think many people will bother to write to their MP, no matter how strongly they feel about this matter and even if they do, I seriously doubt BN will take heed. For that matter, they hardly need to crack their whip to get all their “self interest and self preserverence” MPs to toe the line.
You’ll will notice from the Fairuz extention that despite the justiec walk and petition to the King, our PM was adament in pushing thru the extention. I think the justice walk, petition to the King and the rulers themselves collectively block the extention.
In this instance, as you mention Bersih will be organizing a gathering outside Parliament. Instead of us writing individually, why don’t we petition the King again and as a signatory on your last 2 petition, you are free to use my signature on this very important matter.
Sorry, to impose on you again but time is of the essence and I truely believe many people would browse around cyberspace but to get them to write is a different matter altogether.
chong888,
I think it is important for people to write directly to their MP in this case. I want people to assess for themselves whether their MPs in fact heed their call or abide by the party whip. It may help people to resolve whether they are prepared to carry on voting as they have in the past ( blindly ) or whether they want to make a more discerning choice this time round.
When I asked for the consent to retain particulars of signatories to the last petition in a database, it was not with a view to automatically use those names for any new petition. I think that would be wrong. The purpose was to keep you informed of initiatives and to see if we could not utilise the names to mobilise.
Let me see a hundred letters go out and then I will start to draft a petition. At least, that will give me a sense of whether or not we can get support for the same.

Please walk like the Burmese Monks – silently. Limit the participants to members of like minded organisations & NGO’s. If possible issue identification tags to prevent police & Government “hantu’s” to infliterate and cause trouble. Most important respect race and religious sentiments – we are not fighting race but the Government of the day’s policy. Have marshalls to control the crowd and carry the Malaysian Jelor Gemilang high Up – let the police attack the Jelor Gemilanag and symbolically the DYMM The Agong.

would it be possible to put on these pages, the seen assets of these politicians, things like the cars they or members of their families own, the huge houses they live in or other known properties they or members of theirs own. We can then let the public decide own their honesty in the coming election, this should apply even to those who hold office at state or ‘bandar’ level. Let post their cars and what have you.
coolie,
Would require prior verification that assets displayed here in fact belong to the person concerned.
Has to be investigated first.

Constitution is not something to be interfered with at ones whims and fancies. It is a sacred document sanctioned by our founding fathers for this country of ours. The fact that the constitution has to be amended just to keep one employee of the government in service just goes to show that the government was not monitoring the all important Election Commission and did nothing to ensure that there was a system of heirarchy in place to ensure the efficient functioning of the very heart of a democratic country, that is the election commission. Shame on the powers in being for this failure

On December 1, 2007 at 11:36 am, Rajaretnam A/L Nadason Says:
Rajaretnam, I am amazed at your ignorance on what democracy is all about! There is nothing wrong in ammending the constitution as Malaysia is a democratic country where people are the sovereign. Our constitution allows such ammendments if two-thirds of parliament agree. As the ruling Barisan Nasional has more than a two-thirds, this should be easy!
I know Tan Sri Abdul Rashid personally and he is a deeply religious man who fears God alone. Therefore, I do not see why he should not be allowed an extra term. Those who hate him are mainly opposition parties and opposition-linked NGOs (such as those in BERSIH).

Hi Haris,
I’m still not of age to vote yet (18 this year) but I’ve been watching this episode with interest. Not really sure what I can do since I’m not legally a voter yet, but the least I can think of is writing an informal open letter to the PM that I’ve posted up in my blog, just to spread the awareness and staying hopeful that it’ll spread itself out.
Here’s the link if you’d like to look at it, thanks.
http://teehk.blogspot.com/2007/12/open-letter.html
Oh, and the MP for my area, Bukit Bintang, is opposition controlled, so are the nearby Seputeh and Cheras constituencies.
HK,
You could still write your MP and say that your family members who are voters in his constituency ( I’m assuming there are ) want him to vote against the bill ( I’m assuming they do ).
Will check out your blog
